Realise I must have accidentally overwritten the Mark Barrott album as it was on my ballot to start with

Missed a big chunk of the albums rollout but never mind. Don't feel like I listened to a lot of albums qua albums in 2016, having recently joined Spotify and getting more interested in tracks-based music like dancehall / afro-pop etc. Still, I'm pleased with this list and I'm pleased with the poll in general. Thanks polly people for running it!

I know they've got their detractors, and even some hardened Radiohead fans thought AMSP was boring, but honestly I think it's the best thing I've heard in several years from one of my all-time favourite bands. It's not 'coffee-table' music, neither is it boring at all. The sustained mood is one of its major strengths after a long run of increasingly disjointed albums that were good enough but largely incoherent. I'm still hearing new things every time I put it on and my favourite track changes frequently.

I've listened to 'The Greatest' so many times. I really like it. Listened to the KING album a handful of times and I like it's 'Human Nature' goes dream-pop loveliness. Not sure I love it as much as a lot of ILM but I'm pleased that a relative outlier like this can do so well and it's not something obvious like Bowie or Beyonce.

I spent a lot of time listening to Rae Sremm and Young Thug this year. I just find these albums totally joyous and addicting. Similarly, the Lil Yachty album shouldn't be slept on, and I'm enjoying the positive, youthful vibes coming through in some branches of trap at the moment.

Any Autechre album is going to jibe well with me, but Elseq is a unique and fantastic project even for them. The granular levels of detail in these tracks - it's like rinse-aid for the ears, and I like how they're morphing into pretty much a 21st century electronic live free-jazz act.

Loads of great dancehall, soca, afro-pop and fusions of these coming out this year. Moving to Bristol has meant more ready access to these styles and I'm lucky enough to live near a club that puts on regular 'Jamaican bass' nights (as they call it sometimes). So yeah, Alkaline, Equiknoxx, Yemi Alade and many others have played a huge part in my life over the past year.

Just wanna also say that the Paul Simon album that came out this year is straight-fire brilliant. I'm not necessarily a follower or a big fan, but for a guy in his mid-70s this is vital, venturous and exciting music - especially the song 'Cool Papa Bell'.
