"teenage dirtbag" is a great song, in case that obvious fact was being misinterpreted by people reading these casual comparisons

Teenage Dirtbag with a bit of hipster-patriotism on top?
Are you sure you were paying attention?

ok so mitski would appear to be my second 'no idea who this is but wow' discovery of the day, melanie di biasio being the other
"black beatles" is a worthy winner :)
― dyl, Thursday, 26 January 2017 21:06 (seven years ago) link
mitski video also great
also, yes both mitski and weezer use heavily distorted guitar sounds but to way different ends
― niels, Thursday, 26 January 2017 21:06 (seven years ago) link
Thanks pollrunners for making this work. And gr8080 - those fakes were perfectly timed. kudos.
― EZ Snappin, Thursday, 26 January 2017 21:07 (seven years ago) link
Clearly not.
I'll leave the long version for Mitski to tell, but the short version is "I thought I wanted to date you, American Boy, but we're not really on the same page and never will be because of deep culture clash and, whatever, I'm starting to appreciate that as I get older."
― Ⓓⓡ. (Johnny Fever), Thursday, 26 January 2017 21:08 (seven years ago) link
"Black Beatles" has a really good beat, but like with "Bad and Boujee", the lyrics are too sexist that I'd want to listen to it multiple times, sorry. I know these guys are young and all and it's common, time-worn rap tropes they repeating, but there's so much good rap that averts those tropes that I can afford to avoid tunes like this.
― Tuomas, Thursday, 26 January 2017 21:10 (seven years ago) link
mitski song is great"townie" is an absolutely amazing song from her album before if anyones interested x

My Body's Made of Crushed Little Stars was my pick from that record, I voted for it
― voodoo chili, Thursday, 26 January 2017 21:12 (seven years ago) link
All these Weezer and "Teenage Dirtbag" mentions re: Mitski make me sad. Y'all, this song is so much better than any of that moldy old shit.
I'm listening to it now and... not really? It's fine and all but eh.
re: "Black Beatles", this is the best Rae Sremmurd song I've heard to date; I would rate it a 5/10.
― ornate orchestral arrangements (DJP), Thursday, 26 January 2017 21:12 (seven years ago) link
honestly i don't get the Mitski hype either, can't shake the suspicion that it's '90s nostalgia?
― change display name (Jordan), Thursday, 26 January 2017 21:12 (seven years ago) link
80% of the songs on this list are 90s nostalgia in some way
― na (NA), Thursday, 26 January 2017 21:13 (seven years ago) link
well okay I will grant "better than Weezer" but 2nd-best song of 2016? noooooope

Those Voice Coils EPs are wonderful!
Mitski layers this incredible power and beautifully candid lyrics onto any recognisable chord structures. She knows how to create tension in a song like nothing else too. Lol at someone thinking it was supposed to be patriotic.

lol we still are. kind of changing my mind tbh:
lol "Bad and Boujeeblack beatles"
my reaction to it was basically "what is this nonsense"/plays it 5 times in a row/"well I guess I like nonsense now"

i didn't vote but i'm surprised there are no blood orange songs on the list, was it a 2015 release that i was late to?
― na (NA), Thursday, 26 January 2017 21:16 (seven years ago) link
Mitski my #19 but I'm so glad to see it at #2. Or rather #1 of all the songs not by total cunts
All about how the second chorus kicks in so quickly and even more intensely than the first one, such a rush
Oh and thanks Gr80/sean!

can't think of a more righteous way to express disgust at perceived sexism than using a phrase universally seen as a misogynist slur in the country the song comes from

"Black Beatles" sounds fabulous on the radio. It makes the Biebs and the rest sound sickly. That's all.

What is it that people find charming and/or addictive about Rae Sremmurd's personalities? IDK I'm overreacting coz of all the ridiculous shit being flung at Mitski but to me they seem repellent over like all of the other artists in the 77 except Bruno Mars
