my list just shows how uninspiring the top 40 currently is - none of the 5 track i listed are particularly innovative. but they 'stick out' just a little bit more than anything else in there regardless of whether they're any good.

time for england to stop experimenting with wicketkeepers right at the top of the order :) i too am watching this on a plasma. except in my case it's 2am. no work tomorrow, however, which is fantastic.

i like definitely maybe. but for scale and immensity (done well, of course) i'll look outside the oasis canon.

They're saying Phil Mustard should be England's Kaluwitharana figure. I'm not sure if he'd come off against international bowlers, but it might be worth a shot...

Just got offed, Tuesday, 21 August 2007 16:10 (sixteen years ago) link

yeah, i noticed phil mustard was playing well for durham. but i generally think you need solid specialist openers in this day and age. it'll be interesting to see what openers australia opt for when gilly and haydos are no longer around. i might opt for mike hussey and phil jaques, though there's new talent cropping up all the time

Charlie Howard, Tuesday, 21 August 2007 16:39 (sixteen years ago) link

Mustard and Onions must play for England! If only for comedy value!

Tom D., Tuesday, 21 August 2007 16:40 (sixteen years ago) link

hahahha, well it's comedy value that they're already in the same team at the moment anyway!

Charlie Howard, Tuesday, 21 August 2007 16:42 (sixteen years ago) link

That must make the batsmen's eyes water

Tom D., Tuesday, 21 August 2007 16:43 (sixteen years ago) link

hahaha

so what'll it be on your steak sandwich?

Charlie Howard, Tuesday, 21 August 2007 16:44 (sixteen years ago) link

Are there no promising young pace bowlers called Pickles then?

Tom D., Tuesday, 21 August 2007 16:46 (sixteen years ago) link

A huge overdose of cocaine and way too much confidence at least didn't prevent "Stand By Me" from being a great song.

This is by no means as good as "Morning Glory" though. Not even remotely.

Norway became a member of the International Cricket Council in 2000 [2], and played their first international tournament that year, the European Representative Championships in Austria. They won the tournament without losing a game, but did not play again until 2003 when they took part in the ECC Trophy for the first time. They won this tournament too, again without losing a game. This qualified them for Division Two of the European Championship in 2004. They finished fourth in the six team tournament, gaining wins against Gibraltar and Israel.

I'm sure this is old news.

To: Al Gore

Dear Mr. Gore,

We, the undersigned, hold you in the highest regards for inventing the internet. However, there is one issue that has come to light that noone could have possibly forseen: NORWAY. Norway has no business on the internet. 98.3% of Norwegians with internet connections use their computers to join english-speaking chat rooms, only to babble incoherently and then flood before being forcefully removed. This issue must be resolved immediately.

Mr. Gore, O Great Creator of the Internet, please remove all major backbone routes to and from Norway. This is the only solution at this point. Thank you.

Sincerely,

The Undersigned

"D'you Know What I Mean" is basically the best mainstream rock single of the latter '90s.

The guitar sound on that track was created by sampling a helicopter crashing on Liam's sunglasses.

I bought that single the week it came out without hearing it, cos I did like the 1st 2 albums at the time, and when I got home and put it on, that was it for me, I never bothered with Oasis again it was so shit.

Colonel Poo, Wednesday, 22 August 2007 08:52 (sixteen years ago) link

The DNKWIM b-side 'Stay Young' was the best song in that entire period for Oasis - a brilliant stupid shout-along anthem that would have been right at home on the previous albums - and it didn't even make it onto the BHN, showing just how fucked up and clueless they were at the time.

onimo, Wednesday, 22 August 2007 09:05 (sixteen years ago) link

I quite liked DYKWIM; I thought it was big and dark and groovey (by Oasis standards). I liked the Morse code and the vibe. It was the rest of the album that was fucking wank.

Scik Mouthy, Wednesday, 22 August 2007 09:29 (sixteen years ago) link

I've only begun to really get into Oasis, these last six months. Those first two albums are fucking amazing. From what I've read, I just imagine that 'Be Here Now' is 'Definitely Maybe' x 10.

I'm saving it, though. I'm backtracking through the Britpop thing now (I'm 21), and just checking out what seems worth it. I know 'BHN' is sort of the "last" Britpop album, so, I thought it should be the last one of that era that I check out. Almost there.

Yeah. Excelsior this. Oasis is a joke now. Whatever. I think they fucking rock, and, so do some certain well-respected rock critics around here. . .

They fucking kill Blur.

andi, Wednesday, 22 August 2007 09:40 (sixteen years ago) link

Dom Passantino, Wednesday, 22 August 2007 13:10 (sixteen years ago) link

I just imagine that 'Be Here Now' is 'Definitely Maybe' x 10.

Well you're certain to be disappointed going into it like that. Be Here Now is really difficult to compare to the first two albums, mainly because it cranks up the melodrama to 11 while leaving behind most of the melodies that made the first two great. Still, there's something I love about its coke-addled mess.
