Previous Phoenix record was a horrific mess, in terms of mastering. As was the one that followed. Unlistenable. WAP is great pop fun for driving around in summer to.
It's great for 3 songs and then there's that buzzkill 10-minute long track 4 thing right in the middle of the album that goes nowhere.
― billstevejim, Thursday, 1 September 2016 15:32 (seven years ago) link
Actor is still a really good album.
I dunno, Fuck Buttons felt edgy, energetic, spiky and interesting at the time. Now it sounds like slowed down techno played strictly in the mid-range. 2009 felt like a big year in general for long crescending music that builds but ends up nowhere.

GY!BE's heyday was late 90s
― Don't boo, vote (DJP), Thursday, 1 September 2016 16:19 (seven years ago) link
Ha, 2009 was a big postrock year for me as well. Worriedaboutsatan and Her Name is Calla. Land of Kush.
― Frederik B, Thursday, 1 September 2016 16:25 (seven years ago) link
otm about Fuck Buttons, though I never really dug them... so much stuff from the late aughts is already so dated... remember EAR PWR and High Places?

I thought a lot of it was horrendous at the time, to be fair. It started to pick up again circa 2011 for me.

Yeesh these choices are not very attractive. Going on what's here I'd probably go with Wilco. But hoo boy, what a smelly list.

Sunn O))) pretty much the only one for me.

I haven't listened to High Places in years. But relistening now, 03/07-09/07 is still awesome.

Voted for Actor. Easily my favourite St Vincent record. Two Dancers, It's Blitz, Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix, Embryonic, Only Built 4 Cuban Linx... Pt II and Fever Ray all stand up too.
I still really rate the Royksopp album mentioned earlier. It's their only essential record.
― Kitchen Person, Thursday, 1 September 2016 23:44 (seven years ago) link
Fuck Buttons sounded dated to me when it came out. It's just not very good.

A Sunny Day in Glasgow's "Ashes Grammar" was the big album for me at the time. Of the options here I guess it's Callahan or Bat for Lashes.
― geoffreyess, Friday, 2 September 2016 15:04 (seven years ago) link
So it did! Not sure how I remembered it so clearly along with other 2009 albums. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

My favorite and by far most-played album from 2009 is Polvo's In Prism.
Best song: The Mountain Goats - "Ezekiel 7 and the Permanent Efficacy of Grace"Close second: Bat for Lashes - "Daniel"

UFO wasn't making sense (as metal is not that big around here) but they did release an album called The Visitor in 2009.

or i should have said, this isn't Rate Your Music so UFO made no sense.

I must the only one who thinks Crack the Skye is one of the finest albums of the last decade at least. Oh well. And I've never heard them but The Pains of Being Pure at Heart must be one of the most irrationally(?) infuriating bandnames ever.
