I like the album too. It gets a bit much to hear all at once, I agree about the mix, it has some of that endless shiny tinkle that drives me crazy about bands like Animal Collective and Flaming Lips. But the songs are inventive and likable.

I'm a lot more favourably disposed towards the name now I know they're actual kids rather than a load of twee former art students.

too much repeating the title and their voices are a bit grating, otherwise pleasantly mashes together all the other pop. are they signed to PC Music yet haha
― imago, Tuesday, 30 January 2018 10:53 (six years ago) link
turns out this was produced by sophie so almost lol, but they're a surprisingly good fit together

they have never recaptured the original Deep Six Textbook imo
― imago, Tuesday, 30 January 2018 12:48 (six years ago) link
would love more in the vein of Deep Six Textbook but the new one is really successful at blending their sensibility with Sophie's and i would love more like it too

This album is muuuuch better than the debut
― imago, Friday, 29 June 2018 09:17 (five years ago) link
yeah it's a huge step up in every way. the debut showed promise, I especially liked Deep Six Textbook and Eat Shiitake Mushrooms, but I'm All Ears has so much more ambition and focus. it also helps that it's way less twee too

Wow, this album is fantastic. I really didn't expect to love it this much after how I little I thought of the debut. Everybody is OTM about Donnie Darko, it's one of the best things I've heard all year.
This is really shaping up to be an incredible year for albums and we still have Mitski and The 1975 to come!

Me: "That spade is a spade."Tom D.: "Elaborate."Me: "Well, it's a spade. It really is as simple as that."Tom D.: "Wow, your inability to handle being challenged on even the slightest, most trivial, of points and habit of doubling down and going on the attack in response is so Pavlovian, I don't think you can help yourself."Entire world: "???"

They're playing in DC on Thursday but I doubt I'll get to go becase of school night/hurricane double whammy. Anyone see them live?

Bit disappointed by the new album. It's nice enough and the vocals are fantastic but they took away a lot of the things that made the second album so compelling. Some of it sounds pretty generic compared to what they were doing before.

hmm, I think this album's pretty great, esp. "Happy New Year" and "Two Ribbons." latter is one of those songs where I keep hearing the tension of it not going bigger in the way it seems ready to, so that every detail (slight distortion, a second voice tripping over the first, "watch them wash away") reads as a massive ripple in the fabric. reminds me of some other closing track(s) I can't quite place, has "So Tonight That I Might See" or "Looking Glass" energy maybe.
