forgotten gems pt1 (album version) : the word.

the underlying beat and bassline with the vocal melody = sonic honey.
yeah i know he lost a lot of love in later years, but there were times he always hit the jackpot.
this is one such track i had totally forgotten about, and loving it.

Wow, such a huge and unexpected loss. Really surprising as he truly did seem ageless and superhuman. He was a masterful writer in his prime, probably among the best writers ever.

Rest in Purple.

xp my personal theory was that he was gonna have everything he made posthumously uploaded onto the web for free in perpetuity. seemed the right kind of iconoclastic move. here's hoping.

Seems unlikely considering how much he disliked his music being available for free on the web.

Position Position, Thursday, 21 April 2016 20:01 (eight years ago) link

I saw him in '97 on the Love 4 One Another tour. I seem to recall he had just started going by Prince again.
He hardly played any of his bigger hits, other than snippets.

and it was still one of the best shows I've seen.

remember when hardcore Prince fans would wonder why he coughed at the beginning of the "Raspberry Beret" video

so many great videos tbh - Little Red Corvette, Alphabet St, Raspberry Beret

I remember hearing this, though I cannot confirm it. Anyway, it feels a lot like when the SJWs dragged out some of Bowie's more questionable sexual antics immediately in the wake of his death. Legends die, but perpetual outrage never can.

re: his masters. I'm sure I read this story on ILX. An engineer working with him, Prince came in one night, supposedly heartbroken, recorded this beautiful song top to bottom, engineer was floored, 8 hours later they're listening to the final mix and Prince just says "Erase it."

flappy bird, Thursday, 21 April 2016 20:25 (eight years ago) link

frankocean

i'm not even gonna say rest in peace because it’s bigger than death. i never met the man (i was too nervous the one time i saw him) and i never saw him play live, regrettably. i only know the legends I’ve heard from folks and what i’ve heard and seen from his deep catalog of propellant, fearless, virtuosic work. my assessment is that he learned early on how little value to assign to someone else’s opinion of you.. an infectious sentiment that seemed soaked into his clothes, his hair, his walk, his guitar and his primal scream. he wrote my favorite song of all time, ‘when you were mine’. it’s a simple song with a simple melody that makes you wish you thought of it first, even though you never would have - a flirtatious brand of genius that feels approachable. he was a straight black man who played his first televised set in bikini bottoms and knee high heeled boots, epic. he made me feel more comfortable with how i identify sexually simply by his display of freedom from and irreverence for obviously archaic ideas like gender conformity etc. he moved me to be more daring and intuitive with my own work by his demonstration - his denial of the prevailing model...his fight for his intellectual property - ‘slave’ written across the forehead, name changed to a symbol... an all out rebellion against exploitation. A vanguard and genius by every metric I know of who affected many in a way that will outrun oblivion for a long while. I’m proud to be a Prince fan(stan) for life.

xpost ha I thought it was going to be an interview with Susan Rogers (is rogers her last name? His awesome engineer during SOTT era)

scarcity festival (Jon not Jon), Thursday, 21 April 2016 20:44 (eight years ago) link

from the adult baby thread:

I read an amusing anecdote recently from a guy who worked in a sound engineering capacity with Prince around the time of Paisley Park. One day Prince announced that he wanted to hear what a guitar sounded like underwater, so he ordered this guy to take various amplifiers out of the studio and set them up in his swimming pool. The engineer pointed out that the amps and microphones would instantly short out and never work again. Prince was all death-stare, "I wanna hear what they sound like in the pool". So this guy spent the afternoon dutifully lowering various cabs, combos and mics into the pool, and of course as soon as he turned the power on, they all immediately blew up. Prince had already lost interest and was like, get this crap out of my pool. So the experiment concluded with the engineer tossing thousands of dollars' worth of gear into a skip.
