3 metallica, 1 slayer, 1 burzum, 1 darkthrone, 1 mayhem and 1 atheist don't go into 6, although maybe ilx has renounced the more racist albums. or metallica

Obviously ILM is all about embracing their inner racist, with James Hetfields redneck antics, Jeff Hannemans fascination for Nazi doctors, Vargs silly RPG, Darkthrones "obvious Jewish behaviour" and Mayhems "black metal is for white people", etc.

XP one could say that such lengths, at the time, were EXTREME!

Frobisher, Wednesday, 24 February 2016 18:33 (eight years ago) link

xp

but they draw the line at anselmo? weird

The Call Of Cthulow (Cosmic Slop), Wednesday, 24 February 2016 18:34 (eight years ago) link

hey, like I said, 'sanatarium' is awesome until the actual thrash begins, it's like an american take on goth-rock

odysseus (imago), Wednesday, 24 February 2016 18:34 (eight years ago) link

xps don't forget Dave Mustaine's dodgy anti-government conspiracy rants...

Frobisher, Wednesday, 24 February 2016 18:34 (eight years ago) link

I think we draw the line at Anselmo simply because ILM doesn't much care for Pantera.

Frobisher, Wednesday, 24 February 2016 18:35 (eight years ago) link

The inevitable number 1:

i think this record is pretty overrated but when i'm in the mood i enjoy it a lot

HYPERLINK TO RAP GENIUS (BradNelson), Wednesday, 24 February 2016 18:41 (eight years ago) link

tt and I were discussing how Extreme would make a great joke winner haha

odysseus (imago), Wednesday, 24 February 2016 18:41 (eight years ago) link

agree w BradNelson (I voted for a different Mayhem), and am happy to see this (presumably) not take the black metal prize

Dominique, Wednesday, 24 February 2016 18:42 (eight years ago) link

after hearing ppl scream their name for 30 years im resigned to who which thrash act will beat out the death and black metal

The Call Of Cthulow (Cosmic Slop), Wednesday, 24 February 2016 18:45 (eight years ago) link

In theory De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas is overrated but its influence has been so huge - I mean hundreds of bands must've walked into the studio with this record in hand: "like this, please".

Siegbran, Wednesday, 24 February 2016 18:47 (eight years ago) link

I prefer Deathcrush, but De Mysteriis is definitely a huge influence on basically all Black Metal after it.

Frobisher, Wednesday, 24 February 2016 18:50 (eight years ago) link

My thing w that record is that it doesn't sound very much like the stuff that Mayhem had put out up to then (including boots, live and rehearsals that I liked). It was almost like they had to play catch-up with that record, even tho they were actually the first band of the 2nd wave to do anything, and the whole scene seemed to revolve around them

Well in a sense they did, with the Dead situation the band was thrown back while Burzum, Immortal and Darkthrone all went ahead and recorded their debuts - and if I recall, most of De Mysteriis was already recorded in 1992 until they got Attila over there. But half of DMDS was already on Live In Leipzig, no? Not that big of a surprise, other than the surprisingly excellent sound Pytten got out of them.

Siegbran, Wednesday, 24 February 2016 19:03 (eight years ago) link

The darkthrone was my #17

yeah, a lot of was on Live in Leipzig, but for some reason, that record comes off a lot closer to the first wave influences, and scummy Hellhammer kind of vibe than DMDS, which seems a bit more monolithic to me

Dominique, Wednesday, 24 February 2016 19:07 (eight years ago) link

omg I forgot about that Pat Boone album and the whole debacle.

Frobisher, Wednesday, 24 February 2016 19:09 (eight years ago) link

In a grand twist, I'm listening to Atheist - Unquestionable Presence instead. Fuck me it's amazing.

odysseus (imago), Wednesday, 24 February 2016 19:10 (eight years ago) link

Atheist is great!

Frobisher, Wednesday, 24 February 2016 19:12 (eight years ago) link

Pantheist is better tho. lol

Slayer vs Metallica vs Atheist vs At The Gates for #1. but we all know what it is

The Call Of Cthulow (Cosmic Slop), Wednesday, 24 February 2016 19:17 (eight years ago) link

it's weird I always rated hvis over filosofem

HYPERLINK TO RAP GENIUS (BradNelson), Wednesday, 24 February 2016 19:17 (eight years ago) link

I've never been able to get into Filosofem but Transilvanian Hunger is a favourite, even though the lyrical content is probably more noxious. Apparently, some kinds of lo-fi shambling click better than others?

What's everyone's guess for the #1?

Frobisher, Wednesday, 24 February 2016 19:19 (eight years ago) link

It's Reign in Blood.

Hi! I'm twice-coloured! (Sund4r), Wednesday, 24 February 2016 19:19 (eight years ago) link

oted for this Burzum, tho surprised to see it at #2. It is a great record tho, I think I actually listen to the 23 minute track more than any other on it

TH is probably my 4th or 5th favorite Darkthrone, but it's still great. Kind of like how Sgt Pepper is my 4th or 5th favorite Beatles

Dominique, Wednesday, 24 February 2016 19:19 (eight years ago) link

hallelujah XPOST

odysseus (imago), Wednesday, 24 February 2016 19:20 (eight years ago) link

tbh I like Filosofem a lot, too bad it was made by a racist cannibal.

Frobisher, Wednesday, 24 February 2016 19:20 (eight years ago) link

Is there any interest in a Lifetime of ILM aka 2000-2015 Metal poll?

The Call Of Cthulow (Cosmic Slop), Wednesday, 24 February 2016 19:20 (eight years ago) link

Heh, the lyrical content of Filosofem is probably the tamest of all the 200 records in this countdown.
