joanna wang album is wonderful, kudos to whomever nommed it.

pandemic, Thursday, 7 January 2016 17:21 (eight years ago) link

is it too late for noms, or should I just hopelessly write-in?

campreverb, Thursday, 7 January 2016 20:40 (eight years ago) link

geko "baba" - afrobeats vibe via manchester kid of libyan heritage singing about the tribulations of interracial relationships in 2015 britain. indelible hook

omg this song quotes magic!'s "rude"

i love it so much

Thanks! I'm really glad people to see people are listening to and enjoying it. I'd like to see her get more attention — she seems relatively unknown Stateside, and I only discovered her by chance a couple of years ago (an album cover caught my eye in an email from an Asian retailer).

eatandoph (Neue Jesse Schule), Friday, 8 January 2016 07:55 (eight years ago) link

Yeah, I only found it by scrolling through the album nominations playlist and clicking on each opening track. I think I required about ten seconds of When I Nod for the album to instantly lodge itself in my top 5. In a fucking great year, too. It is a phenomenal record and one I'd like to promote here as much as any I'd previously heard.

Well here's my little repping bit:

Korede Bello - 'Godwin'
I've banged on about this track ever since I found it on the Rolling Afrobeats thread. It's such a great bit of work - an exceptional track in an exceptional scene. Uplifting, good vibes, distinct, implacable beat that takes a few bars to really get a grip on. I just love it.

Domenique Dumont - 'L'Esprit de L'Escalier'
Don't really know anything about the origins of this strange little track. The album is Tubular Bells on a tropical island; the soundtrack from Donkey Kong Country with a French yéyé twist. This one is all about how the melody switches around the 3 minute mark. First time I heard it, it felt like a little piece of my life slotting back into place.

AKA ft. Burna Boy - All Eyes On Me
A match made in heaven of afrobeats, hip hop and dancehall. Been playing it all year and it still sounds great.

DJ Paypal - Slim Trak
I was a bit concerned that DJ Rashad's death would spell the end for footwork. But with Jlin topping a lot of EOY lists it looks like the Chicago scene is not only burgeoning but going truly global. Paypal's 'Sold Out' double-EP is easily as inventive, with this track sharing a lot in common with the Afro-Portuguese sound fronted by people like Marfox.

Miami Horror - Wild Motion (Set It Free)
This album made up a large part of my summer soundtrack. A really diverse indie-electro-pop record - think MGMT but not as screechy, and less obnoxious. Just great summer tunes, it never gets boring.

Frazey Ford - September Fields
Brassy country. A beautiful voice and some dazzling organ-work here.

KERO KERO BONITO

got a placement

This is more for forks than anything; there's no way the Camoufleurs songs I nominated are on Spotify, so here are some links just in case you wanted to include them on your big listen-a-thon next year. They're a semi-local indie band--in fact I mentioned in the nominations thread that I'm related to the singer/primary songwriter--and the first time I heard both these songs, my jaw dropped, and I had a momenr, a "Holy crap I can't believe I know the people who made this" moment. The parent EP, "1980", is patchy and full of pastiche, but those songs were gorgeous liquid jangle alt-country psychedelia, with a tactile sense of atmosphere to rival KING.

spiritual hat gaz (Drugs A. Money), Saturday, 9 January 2016 08:52 (eight years ago) link

A better, smarter, more "with it" Drugs A. Money would have figured out ways to nominate these two songs:

I caught this song sometime earlier in the year and it wasn't until a couple days ago I figured out what it was called and who sang it. I guess this is one of the biggest Spanish-language Billboard hits ever...? though that might be the remake with Enrique Iglesias. I like this version way better, but it's p much an unsinkable earworm

Nicky Jam, "El Perdon"

Found this on Alfred's blog a few months ago. It's a blatant masterpiece. Flatline, which is not as good, got nominated instead, abd I'll prob end up putting it on my ballot solely out of a deep sense of remorse.

i could get used to this polling lark

Noodle Vague, Saturday, 9 January 2016 18:38 (eight years ago) link

are there way more tracks nominated than previous years? i seem to remember being able to listen to the tracks playlist over a weekend in past years but this time it's 90 hours

ciderpress, Saturday, 9 January 2016 18:50 (eight years ago) link

it's saturday afternoon and i've only made it through A's and B's :|

ciderpress, Saturday, 9 January 2016 18:52 (eight years ago) link

I think it's up this year, but iirc it's traditionally been in the 1200-1300 range. (Or I may be misremembering it entirely.)

Ⓓⓡ. (Johnny Fever), Saturday, 9 January 2016 19:04 (eight years ago) link

Last year's spotify playlist was 1080, this year is 1273

but i would honestly chalk that up to more songs being available on the service

My top fives have basically been solidified for ages but I'm still pretty vague on placements and even entries below that. And time creeps on.

emil.y, Saturday, 9 January 2016 19:45 (eight years ago) link

is Gigi Masin's Talk To The Sea eligible? I see it on the Spotify playlist but not the Pastebin list

sleeve, Saturday, 9 January 2016 20:36 (eight years ago) link

whoever nominated Roman Flügel's " Black Towers", thank you, it's epic! one of the best things I've heard this year

Talk to the Sea placed last year

Dan S, Saturday, 9 January 2016 20:37 (eight years ago) link

on the other hand, listening to 1273 songs to find 5 more to round out my ballot is very me

ciderpress, Saturday, 9 January 2016 20:38 (eight years ago) link

VOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOTE!

I did my tracks last weekend and I just did my albums today.

Ⓓⓡ. (Johnny Fever), Sunday, 10 January 2016 15:32 (eight years ago) link

i gave up on listening to all the tracks and just voted with what i had already

ciderpress, Sunday, 10 January 2016 15:35 (eight years ago) link

^this is why I try to get my tracks nominations in early on years I gaf about tracks

spiritual hat gaz (Drugs A. Money), Sunday, 10 January 2016 19:11 (eight years ago) link

(Though I think a lot of it comes from the sudden influx of decent-to-great songs rendering tasks such as ranking, and even including some into yr ballot while excluding others, into an absurd enterprise)

spiritual hat gaz (Drugs A. Money), Sunday, 10 January 2016 19:20 (eight years ago) link

I listen on shuffle idk

sounding like a silly Iain Banks on a track (imago), Sunday, 10 January 2016 19:21 (eight years ago) link

have gained a crucial handful of great albums+trax by listening to the playlists. obv the benefit is not just to one's ballot

sounding like a silly Iain Banks on a track (imago), Sunday, 10 January 2016 19:23 (eight years ago) link

Yeah Brad said he listened on shuffle too. It's probably the best way

spiritual hat gaz (Drugs A. Money), Sunday, 10 January 2016 19:43 (eight years ago) link

I sorted it by running length one year, from shortest to longest.

Ⓓⓡ. (Johnny Fever), Sunday, 10 January 2016 20:38 (eight years ago) link

there's….an option to do that…..anyway…...

sounding like a silly Iain Banks on a track (imago), Sunday, 10 January 2016 20:59 (eight years ago) link

Voted! Would also be pleased if Kero Kero Bonito got a placement.

Mercer Finn, Sunday, 10 January 2016 21:38 (eight years ago) link

Grrrr.... I'm regretting my laziness in making sure some my favorite albums were nominated. I know anything not already nominated would have made it in the top 77, but I still feel weird removing some of my favorite albums of the year from my list.

Rod Steel (musicfanatic), Monday, 11 January 2016 01:01 (eight years ago) link

I've given up on nominating weird outliers and am just voting based on the list, didn't participate in the nominations process at all.

sleeve, Monday, 11 January 2016 02:45 (eight years ago) link

Voted. Was happy to find that most of my top 25 had been nominated (a few by me), except for Dyke Drama and a few metal albums which didn't have a chance anyway.

o. nate, Monday, 11 January 2016 03:12 (eight years ago) link

i voted!!!!! yay

HYPERLINK TO RAP GENIUS (BradNelson), Monday, 11 January 2016 04:33 (eight years ago) link

voting shouldn't open until two days before deadline imo

sounding like a silly Iain Banks on a track (imago), Monday, 11 January 2016 12:11 (eight years ago) link

There is a listing for "Sparky - Numbers" on the tracks list that I think might be faulty. The single is on the label Numbers. I am guessing that the nom is supposed to be for the track "Signals".

Non-Stop Erotic Calculus (bmus), Monday, 11 January 2016 18:51 (eight years ago) link

how do write-in votes work, do they get ignored? i noticed something didn't get nominated somehow (i guess i should have actually ctrl+F'd for it), it would be in my top 5 if i can write it in
