xp there will be genre playlists too? damn, that's very cool. i tried to figure out a way to sort by genre when last year's noms playlist was up, and even looked into the spotify API for help, but gave up on it. forks you are a golden god.

davey, Tuesday, 5 January 2016 22:56 (eight years ago) link

25 tracks is criminal :(

✖✖✖ (Moka), Tuesday, 5 January 2016 23:05 (eight years ago) link

xp thanks davey, but i meant genre playlists for the individual threads, not the best of nominations... though that wouldn't be THAT difficult to do...

Thanks to whoever nommed shura-touch

✖✖✖ (Moka), Wednesday, 6 January 2016 01:00 (eight years ago) link

oh did Touch get nominated after all? thought people felt it wasn't really eligible since it was from 2014?

ufo, Wednesday, 6 January 2016 01:09 (eight years ago) link

year of impact: if it feels 2015 to you, vote for it

"2shy" is way better though

Real vote splitter there. Only "White Light" really stuck with me.

Flesh emoji (Sanpaku), Wednesday, 6 January 2016 01:42 (eight years ago) link

probably still going to go with "White Light" but could easily vote for any of those three

ufo, Wednesday, 6 January 2016 01:50 (eight years ago) link

White Light got my vote.

HYPERLINK TO RAP GENIUS (BradNelson), Wednesday, 6 January 2016 02:38 (eight years ago) link

It could've gone either way.

Ⓓⓡ. (Johnny Fever), Wednesday, 6 January 2016 03:26 (eight years ago) link

Voted for both because one is definitely 2015 and the other is just too good and I think it wasn't even nommed in the 2014 poll.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Wednesday, 6 January 2016 06:37 (eight years ago) link

the arthur russell corn disc is really good, surprised it didn't get nommed

lute bro (brimstead), Wednesday, 6 January 2016 07:02 (eight years ago) link

(i like it much better than love is overtaking me me, anyway)

lute bro (brimstead), Wednesday, 6 January 2016 07:02 (eight years ago) link

Corn didn't really make an impact on me; I should probably give it a second chance though.

xxp unexpected Les Shadoks sample on the 2nd track

(not from that actual episode)

moans and feedback (Dinsdale), Wednesday, 6 January 2016 13:33 (eight years ago) link

which lady leshurr track to go for between 'lukatar' and 'queen's speech 4'...? think i prefer 'lukatar' but against that it's v hard not to vote for a song that has "i've got a dark skinned friend that looks like rachel dolezal..and i've got a light skinned friend that looks like rachel dolezal" in it.

pandemic, Wednesday, 6 January 2016 17:01 (eight years ago) link

all the queen's speeches are better than "lukatar" imo

was tempted to nominate QS3 (and QS2) but QS4 was the gigantic viral hit and prob the best

cher guevara (lex pretend), Wednesday, 6 January 2016 17:12 (eight years ago) link

QS4 kinda ruined for me by the Jenner line leaping out every time I listen :/

etc, Wednesday, 6 January 2016 21:07 (eight years ago) link

put the tracks list on shuffle again today and there were two jams in a row! harry dennis, "no matter what (dgl mix)" and ac slater, "u got 2"

HYPERLINK TO RAP GENIUS (BradNelson), Wednesday, 6 January 2016 21:09 (eight years ago) link

i discovered popcaan's "weed is my best friend" thru this poll + it's otm and i voted for it.

geko "baba" - afrobeats vibe via manchester kid of libyan heritage singing about the tribulations of interracial relationships in 2015 britain. indelible hook

omg this song quotes magic!'s "rude"

i love it so much

Thanks! I'm really glad people to see people are listening to and enjoying it. I'd like to see her get more attention — she seems relatively unknown Stateside, and I only discovered her by chance a couple of years ago (an album cover caught my eye in an email from an Asian retailer).

eatandoph (Neue Jesse Schule), Friday, 8 January 2016 07:55 (eight years ago) link

Yeah, I only found it by scrolling through the album nominations playlist and clicking on each opening track. I think I required about ten seconds of When I Nod for the album to instantly lodge itself in my top 5. In a fucking great year, too. It is a phenomenal record and one I'd like to promote here as much as any I'd previously heard.

sounding like a silly Iain Banks on a track (imago), Friday, 8 January 2016 08:17 (eight years ago) link

Well here's my little repping bit:

Korede Bello - 'Godwin'
I've banged on about this track ever since I found it on the Rolling Afrobeats thread. It's such a great bit of work - an exceptional track in an exceptional scene. Uplifting, good vibes, distinct, implacable beat that takes a few bars to really get a grip on. I just love it.

Domenique Dumont - 'L'Esprit de L'Escalier'
Don't really know anything about the origins of this strange little track. The album is Tubular Bells on a tropical island; the soundtrack from Donkey Kong Country with a French yéyé twist. This one is all about how the melody switches around the 3 minute mark. First time I heard it, it felt like a little piece of my life slotting back into place.

AKA ft. Burna Boy - All Eyes On Me
A match made in heaven of afrobeats, hip hop and dancehall. Been playing it all year and it still sounds great.

DJ Paypal - Slim Trak
I was a bit concerned that DJ Rashad's death would spell the end for footwork. But with Jlin topping a lot of EOY lists it looks like the Chicago scene is not only burgeoning but going truly global. Paypal's 'Sold Out' double-EP is easily as inventive, with this track sharing a lot in common with the Afro-Portuguese sound fronted by people like Marfox.

Miami Horror - Wild Motion (Set It Free)
This album made up a large part of my summer soundtrack. A really diverse indie-electro-pop record - think MGMT but not as screechy, and less obnoxious. Just great summer tunes, it never gets boring.

Frazey Ford - September Fields
Brassy country. A beautiful voice and some dazzling organ-work here.

This is more for forks than anything; there's no way the Camoufleurs songs I nominated are on Spotify, so here are some links just in case you wanted to include them on your big listen-a-thon next year. They're a semi-local indie band--in fact I mentioned in the nominations thread that I'm related to the singer/primary songwriter--and the first time I heard both these songs, my jaw dropped, and I had a momenr, a "Holy crap I can't believe I know the people who made this" moment. The parent EP, "1980", is patchy and full of pastiche, but those songs were gorgeous liquid jangle alt-country psychedelia, with a tactile sense of atmosphere to rival KING.

A better, smarter, more "with it" Drugs A. Money would have figured out ways to nominate these two songs:

I caught this song sometime earlier in the year and it wasn't until a couple days ago I figured out what it was called and who sang it. I guess this is one of the biggest Spanish-language Billboard hits ever...? though that might be the remake with Enrique Iglesias. I like this version way better, but it's p much an unsinkable earworm

Nicky Jam, "El Perdon"

Found this on Alfred's blog a few months ago. It's a blatant masterpiece. Flatline, which is not as good, got nominated instead, abd I'll prob end up putting it on my ballot solely out of a deep sense of remorse.
