RE potential Jazmine Sullivan vote-splitting, I vote we all coalesce around Stanley.

dc, Monday, 4 January 2016 19:24 (eight years ago) link

nah "let it burn"

HYPERLINK TO RAP GENIUS (BradNelson), Monday, 4 January 2016 19:25 (eight years ago) link

"mascara" is the one that blows me away as an individual song but was technically 2014, "stanley" or "brand new" would be my second choice but at this point you just realise you should vote for the album, right?

every time i scrolled the tracks list and saw 90% of an album's tracks nominated i got annoyed

cher guevara (lex pretend), Monday, 4 January 2016 19:28 (eight years ago) link

I spent most of today shuffling the tracks playlist, and there were only two tracks that I felt the need to skip before the end. GOOD WORK TEAM.

mike t-diva, Monday, 4 January 2016 20:44 (eight years ago) link

that krystal klear track is extremely good, reminds me that i forgot to nominate morgan geist "mezzanine"

― J0rdan S.

Ugh, I basically flipped a coin over which side of the Galleria 12" to nominate to avoid vote-splitting, and settled on "Calling Card". Sorry!

Cosign all the love for Destra's "Lucy" ... on a soca tip, can I recommend Fadda Fox's Ducking? Video has the "escape the office for carnival" trope from classics like JW & Blaze's "Palance".

People who love the Susanne Sundfør, maybe check out Carla Morrison - Amor Supremo? Different sonic palette (more Disintegration-era Cure fronted by Julee Cruise/LDR/whatevs), but similar emotional range/vibes.

etc, Monday, 4 January 2016 20:52 (eight years ago) link

oh one other thing i meant to campaign for is the four tet remix of eric prydz's "opus" which imo is really perverse

HYPERLINK TO RAP GENIUS (BradNelson), Monday, 4 January 2016 20:53 (eight years ago) link

Just realized I forgot to nominate Vybz Kartel's Viking for the albums. It probably wouldn't have charted but I still feel like a complete idiot right now. Easily one of 2015's strongest releases.

That's the one track I always skip :(

yeah i don't care for that one really. mascara is the one for me.

Spottie, Monday, 4 January 2016 21:35 (eight years ago) link

Mascara would be my pick too but it's clearly an albums' list contender. I'll definitely vote for it.

human and working on getting beer (longneck), Monday, 4 January 2016 21:41 (eight years ago) link

AKA ft Fifi Cooper, Rouge, Moozlie & Gigi Lamayne - Baddest (Remix)

^^^^^fave discovery from the noms playlist so far

gr8080, Monday, 4 January 2016 21:58 (eight years ago) link

mascara and/or brand new and/or forever doesn't last
but honestly i don't vote for singles on an album that i vote for

Does that make you mutter, under your breath, “Damn”? (forksclovetofu), Monday, 4 January 2016 23:10 (eight years ago) link

Voted. A couple things missing from the Spotify playlists that I think are very worthy of consideration.

Hama - Torodi can be heard in its entirety on Bandcamp.
Algiers - "Blood"

Flesh emoji (Sanpaku), Monday, 4 January 2016 23:28 (eight years ago) link

Hama will probably be on my ballot. Songhoy Blues - Music in Exile and Blick Bassy - Akö definitely will. Al-Namrood - Diaji Al Joor is an anonymous middle eastern folk metal band from saudi arabia and The Very Best made a really fun album this year. ok one more the same label that put out Torodi put out a hypnotic album by Fadimoutou Wallet Inamoud that sahelsounds describes as "Isswat recordings from Azawad region of the Sahara desert. Music of nostalgia, longing, and revolutionaries, sung by Fadimoutou Wallet Inamoud in her debut recording, a local production from 2008. Sparse rhythms and hand claps punctuate the meditative hypnosis, accompanied by a the signature vocal drone of her group."

One beautiful thing I found in the end of year lists that I think a lot of people might enjoy is the Nicola Cruz album 'Prender El Alma'. Maybe he's already a big manchego on the balearic thread so I might be telling some of you what you know anyway, but it's something like an Ecuadorian dreamscape of mountains and forest being patiently daubed on a plasterboard wall that's already gently pulsing with the bass from the club next door. There's a lot of folk elements, cumbia rhythms and some echoey Studio-like guitar, all put together in quite a caressing and spacey way. Favourite track atm is Cumbia del Olvido, but the whole thing is on spotify.

seb mooczag (NickB), Tuesday, 5 January 2016 10:54 (eight years ago) link

that sounds nice - i'll definitely check it out

already a bunch of great discoveries from the spotify singles playlist, and i've only heard maybe 10% of it so far. thank you ilx it's like second christmas and i loves you.

davey, Tuesday, 5 January 2016 18:33 (eight years ago) link

i'm finding the transitions less jarring than last year, too, actually they're quite pleasant. forks, do you have any method of sequencing these playlists? my thanks to you and the organizers.

davey, Tuesday, 5 January 2016 18:38 (eight years ago) link

i voted.

Mordy, Tuesday, 5 January 2016 19:01 (eight years ago) link

p sure the playlists are in order of nomination. i keep this in mind and try to order my nominations so they sound good sequentially.

welltris (crüt), Tuesday, 5 January 2016 19:06 (eight years ago) link

xp to davey, it's sequenced as they were nominated, so the transitions are likely to be less jarring as twenty or so in a row are probably in one specific mindset and maybe even preprogrammed by the nominees in that way! I've enjoyed listening to it that way sometimes too but ultimately I hit a pocket of tastes dissimilar to mine so I've transitioned to an "alphabetical by artists" so that I can get a fair taste of what the artist has to offer and not sacrifice diversity.

Does that make you mutter, under your breath, “Damn”? (forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 5 January 2016 19:07 (eight years ago) link

or basically what crut said.

BTW, by that method I just discovered Middle Eastern black metal band Al-Namrood and this is fucking rad!

like, why rush? and why worry if you can get through it all? listen to everything you can and let your mind sort it out.

i'll undoubtedly set aside plenty of time to listen to much of this stuff, yeah, albeit perhaps not so generously as you if a clear impression has formed

i put the tracks playlist on shuffle at work today and yo "northern lights" by cobblestone jazz is the jam

HYPERLINK TO RAP GENIUS (BradNelson), Tuesday, 5 January 2016 20:25 (eight years ago) link

I think the nominations playlist might be one of my new end of year highlights, love it a great deal more than reading over endless 'official' lists.

The one track I want to rep is a late entry for me, the most twisted Afrobeats track I heard all year, Ycee's Yagaban remix. Nothing but rhythmic science - flutes, cascading plucked melodies, processed vocals and jarring synths. What I would have once assumed dancehall might sound like in 2015.

MikoMcha, Tuesday, 5 January 2016 21:03 (eight years ago) link

I too would like to rep for Joanna Wang, which was one of the oddball highlights during my late night listening last night.

i discovered popcaan's "weed is my best friend" thru this poll + it's otm and i voted for it.

Mordy, Tuesday, 5 January 2016 21:33 (eight years ago) link

it was a ton of work so i am pleased to hear the EOY playlists getting so much love
like prob upwards of twelve hours and some general tightening of my OCD screws
i am really looking forward to finishing all the genre playlists for last year and stepping away from handling that project the way I set up; it was not a smart thing for me to do. it basically became an unpaid part-time job!

Someone tell me why I'm thinking so hard about the right choice for the 25th spot on my ballot when I'll most likely be the only voter for all the contenders anyway?

Popcaan put out basically a full album's worth of good stuff in 2015 ("weed..." probably the best one), kind of a shame there's no mixtape gathering it all up.

rob, Tuesday, 5 January 2016 22:14 (eight years ago) link

imago, you should check out the Coral Cross track I nominated, if you haven't. (I am not saying it's the greatest thing ever, but I think it would be up your alley.)

_Rudipherous_, Tuesday, 5 January 2016 22:20 (eight years ago) link

xp there will be genre playlists too? damn, that's very cool. i tried to figure out a way to sort by genre when last year's noms playlist was up, and even looked into the spotify API for help, but gave up on it. forks you are a golden god.

davey, Tuesday, 5 January 2016 22:56 (eight years ago) link

25 tracks is criminal :(

✖✖✖ (Moka), Tuesday, 5 January 2016 23:05 (eight years ago) link

xp thanks davey, but i meant genre playlists for the individual threads, not the best of nominations... though that wouldn't be THAT difficult to do...
