finally got the whole beach slang album

it did not disappoint AT ALL

slothroprhymes, Tuesday, 29 September 2015 21:17 (eight years ago) link

second time listening to it in a row. the songs on the EPs had a big sound but imo this feels /massive/ w/o that equating to overproduced

slothroprhymes, Tuesday, 29 September 2015 21:20 (eight years ago) link

two weeks pass...

btw the new coheed record is very good, and the new fightstar record is excellent

im going through a really intense emo phase out of nowhere

lots of braid, knapsack, jazz june

knapsack out of nowhere has become my favorite band

Been listening to droll-ly named Wuhan band Chinese Football in advance of their GZ show: http://chinesefootball.bandcamp.com/

Brad &c, was there ever a discussion buried somewhere about the American Football revival/cult-ification // twinkle? Never heard so many people talk about The World Is A Beautiful Place... etc IRL as I have here.

etc, Wednesday, 21 October 2015 07:16 (eight years ago) link

probably in one of the last two threads. i mean, the sudden omnipresence of "twinkle" (ugh, still) is one of the reasons i felt confident enough to start a rolling emo thread. most of the bands who belong to that genre are really mediocre though

here is the beach slang album http://bandwidth.wamu.org/first-listen-beach-slang-the-things-we-do-to-find-people-who-feel-like-us/ so good!

listener to of Radiohead (cajunsunday), Friday, 23 October 2015 11:51 (eight years ago) link

these are only tangentially related to emo or pop-punk but i really, really recommend two records that came out this week: shame by petal, and sprained ankle by julien baker

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d99nwE6y_ik

i've been listening to this Adventures album "Supersonic Home" and I like it. Have you heard it, Brad?

Mordy, Friday, 23 October 2015 14:20 (eight years ago) link

wait i thought i was up to speed on what's cool, but: what is twinkle?

alpine static, Friday, 23 October 2015 16:43 (eight years ago) link

bands that take american football (i.e. patient yet mathy emo songs) as a primary influence. genre name derived from "twinkle daddies," which, idk man. see: dads, early the world is a beautiful place, early you blew it, foxing

i have not heard adventures but i'm gonna check them out now

really stoked to see joy buttons and witch coast tonight

This Beach Slang record is good!

Fetty Wap Is Strong In Here (cryptosicko), Tuesday, 27 October 2015 23:57 (eight years ago) link

Two songs in, I was ready to describe this as a less-bratty FIDLAR, but now I'm thinking more like Fucked Up with non-scary vocalist.

Fetty Wap Is Strong In Here (cryptosicko), Wednesday, 28 October 2015 00:02 (eight years ago) link

the vocalist is still my fave thing about them, killer voice

looks like we're supposed to get a "U2-esque" (?!) Modern Baseball album around January to kick off next year's thread 2014-style. should be seeing them w/ Pup and Jeff Rosenstock in Dec. and will report back.

the naive cockney chorus (Simon H.), Wednesday, 28 October 2015 00:44 (eight years ago) link

oh man i love it when emo bands try to be u2, they usually do it better

insufficiently familiar with xgau's work to comment intelligently (BradNelson), Wednesday, 28 October 2015 01:40 (eight years ago) link

totally, it's just that I have a hard time imagining dude's vocal style on anything more expansive than what they already do

the naive cockney chorus (Simon H.), Wednesday, 28 October 2015 01:43 (eight years ago) link

speaking of the expansive end of emo, enjoying the Foxing record reviewed on the 'Fork today

the naive cockney chorus (Simon H.), Friday, 6 November 2015 14:55 (eight years ago) link

what i've heard of that record is great, need to dive into it still

honestly it sounds to me like the last Antlers record on slightly fewer downers, though I realize that's not a tempting description to most people

the naive cockney chorus (Simon H.), Friday, 6 November 2015 15:03 (eight years ago) link

also reminds me a lot of the last Pianos Become the Teeth, they have the same kind of overarching pallor and I was surprised they don't share a producer

the naive cockney chorus (Simon H.), Friday, 6 November 2015 15:14 (eight years ago) link

the foxing record is gorgeous and sad. "eiffel" in particular is stunning

Loving the new Beach Slang. They played here the other night and I think did like 3 jawbreaker covers (a couple just sort of improvised drunkenly) It was a ton of fun.

husked, tonal wails (irrational), Thursday, 12 November 2015 20:05 (eight years ago) link

they were a jawbreaker cover band for fest

insufficiently familiar with xgau's work to comment intelligently (BradNelson), Thursday, 12 November 2015 20:26 (eight years ago) link

Worriers opened for them. That's an album people should be talking about too. Dig it lots.

husked, tonal wails (irrational), Thursday, 12 November 2015 21:02 (eight years ago) link

I like that Beach Slang record, but I think I like James Alex's public (including a 15-minute phoner I did w/ him) attitude/persona/whatever even more. For some, it may come off as corny, but he seems genuinely humbled by the attention to me. Just seems like an awesome dude, and it helps me like the record more, tbh.

alpine static, Thursday, 12 November 2015 22:38 (eight years ago) link

Totally comes across that way when he performs live. Glad it doesn't come across affected. Corny punks are kinda endearing IMHO

two weeks pass...

As we move to the end of the year, I'd like to drop a quick note to encourage any readers / lurkers / ilxors to post their favorite emo haircuts from this year to the thread so that I can hoover them into the ongoing spotify playlist. Last chance for any accessible stragglers that may not already be in the lexicon.

Eugene Goostman (forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 1 December 2015 08:43 (eight years ago) link

got tickets for the academy is... almost here 10 yr anniversary tour -- stoked

Mordy, Friday, 4 December 2015 20:42 (eight years ago) link

have y'all heard of rolo tomassi? i saw them in the kerrang list and it turns out they are right up my alley in terms of being a crushing hardcore band a la converge with some unbelievably gentle, kinda emo moments

HYPERLINK TO RAP GENIUS (BradNelson), Friday, 11 December 2015 01:35 (eight years ago) link

album is fucking awesome

HYPERLINK TO RAP GENIUS (BradNelson), Friday, 11 December 2015 01:35 (eight years ago) link

must check that out immediately thx

the naive cockney chorus (Simon H.), Friday, 11 December 2015 01:40 (eight years ago) link

mind you the last Loma Prieta record was very "Converge meets emo" and didn't work for me at all so we'll see

the naive cockney chorus (Simon H.), Friday, 11 December 2015 01:43 (eight years ago) link

this also has a lot of post-rocky parts but i'm generally unbothered bc the parts that cook really fucking cook

HYPERLINK TO RAP GENIUS (BradNelson), Friday, 11 December 2015 01:48 (eight years ago) link

goddamn this rules

the naive cockney chorus (Simon H.), Friday, 11 December 2015 01:56 (eight years ago) link

might be my imagination but I feel like it has some of the ingenuity of the Cloud Rat album

the naive cockney chorus (Simon H.), Friday, 11 December 2015 01:57 (eight years ago) link

hell yeah it does!

HYPERLINK TO RAP GENIUS (BradNelson), Friday, 11 December 2015 01:58 (eight years ago) link

I listened to this earlier at my emo-loving gf's insistence and yeah it's something for everyone

of course it is possible that I might myself like (some) emo, but let's do this one at a time please

finally the band that brings everyone together

HYPERLINK TO RAP GENIUS (BradNelson), Friday, 11 December 2015 03:58 (eight years ago) link

man, remember that makeshift shelters record from earlier this year? that thing was really good

HYPERLINK TO RAP GENIUS (BradNelson), Wednesday, 16 December 2015 21:48 (eight years ago) link

ahevtn kept up with this like I wanted to this year, you have a best of list for this stuff, Brad? Or anyone else.

Spottie, Wednesday, 16 December 2015 21:51 (eight years ago) link

*I haven't

Spottie, Wednesday, 16 December 2015 21:51 (eight years ago) link

most of the records i was looking forward to in this genre ended up disappointing me but lemme see if i can scrape together a top whatever

mewithoutyou: pale horses
the front bottoms: back on top
rolo tomassi: grievances
fightstar: behind the devil's back
petal: shame
julien baker: sprained ankle
foxing: dealer
the world is a beautiful place: harmlessness
annabel: having it all
fall out boy: american beauty/american psycho
laura stevenson: cocksure
beach slang: the things we do to find people who feel like us
makeshift shelters: something so personal
allison weiss: new love
better off: milk

HYPERLINK TO RAP GENIUS (BradNelson), Wednesday, 16 December 2015 21:58 (eight years ago) link

huh the better off record is definitely better than being last on that list, no idea why i ordered it like that

HYPERLINK TO RAP GENIUS (BradNelson), Wednesday, 16 December 2015 21:58 (eight years ago) link

considered putting the wonder years record on that list but it really is half garbage to me at this point
