all of these songs are fantastic except for Swing On This, which simply sounds out of place.

I'd love to be a unique special snowflake and pick one of the non-single tracks, but No Excuses is just a goddamn perfect song.

aside from "no excuses," i hated these guys at the time - felt like uncut misery - but all their singles sound great now. need to check out deep cuts sometime soon.

Dude, this is the place to start. I was always a little on the fence about them otherwise. I'd also recommend the Mad Season album, which has a similar vibe (and which I might honestly prefer to any of the Alice LPs).

I'm realizing suddenly that I'm all about the AiC marginalia. I think their songs on the Last Action Hero soundtrack are better than most of their non-Jar Of Flies singles. And I prefer the two EPs to any of the albums.

that's a great song, though. the pseudo- middle eastern-flavored guitar riff is great.

Oh for sure. I loved the box set for bringing all those one off tunes together.

Fucking awesome album. The best thing to ever come out of the whole grunge movement. "Nutshell"

Was nice to see that one get its due given they hadn't exploded yet when Sap came out
― Hammer Smashed Bagels, Saturday, 12 September 2015 20:31 (eight years ago) link
Also the hidden track on Sap is fucking hilarious clowning.
― Hammer Smashed Bagels, Saturday, 12 September 2015 20:32 (eight years ago) link
that hidden track on Sap used to freak me out a bit as a kid, probably all the more given my knowledge that these guys took a lot of drugs.

The little cymbal trills in No Excuses make me absurdly happy.

The closeness of the harmonies in No Excuses are always startling to hear, the flinty, droning quality, that's real skill in vocal melody writing.
― MaresNest, Thursday, 2 August 2018 22:24 (five years ago) link
The highs on Dirt are higher but this whole thing is great.
― Siegbran, Friday, 3 August 2018 17:00 (five years ago) link
ah missed this poll. wouldve voted nutshell easily, such beautiful melodies. love how the hook is just some haunting ooooooooooooo's with a simple guitar riff over the top. one of staleys best and most understated vocal performances.
