Top Charity Singles Accompanied By "Check Your Ego At The Door" Videos Of The 1980s

maura, Monday, 24 August 2015 18:01 (eight years ago) link

If this were 2005, they would have included "Come On, Eileen"

Even worse though, if this were 2005 they would have included "Don't Stop Believing."

billstevejim, Monday, 24 August 2015 18:06 (eight years ago) link

i don't have a problem with multiple songs by artists on a list like this. i would have three wide boy awake songs on any top 200 songs of the 80's that i did.

scott seward, Monday, 24 August 2015 18:06 (eight years ago) link

Someone might have, but not Pitchfork. Not in 2005.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 24 August 2015 18:07 (eight years ago) link

just noticed that WHAM/ Everything She Wants sneaks in the 'See Also' bit under Hall And Oats. not sure if that makes it better or worse.

piscesx, Monday, 24 August 2015 18:08 (eight years ago) link

xp "DSB" is one of the '80s picks in The Pitchfork 500 (published in 2008).

billstevejim, Monday, 24 August 2015 18:13 (eight years ago) link

glad 2 see that the pitchfork list has launched successfully

xp oops!

Johnny Fever, Monday, 24 August 2015 18:15 (eight years ago) link

(I'd honestly forgotten that THe Pitchfork 500 even existed.)

Johnny Fever, Monday, 24 August 2015 18:16 (eight years ago) link

journey, don henley, paul simon all among the artists on the pitchfork 500 not on this list. tears for fears went from zero songs on the list to two!

da croupier, Monday, 24 August 2015 18:19 (eight years ago) link

i would also substitute carly track with cruisers creek and fugazi track with oblivious. oblivious should really be in the top ten.

scott seward, Monday, 24 August 2015 18:20 (eight years ago) link

specific song selections/order aside, i like list! (well enough)
afaict (maybe missed it) biggest omission for me is 80s the fall, i mean really
(more subjectively, wd've like to see the clean, but at least chills are there)

also (maybe missed it) nothing in spanish?
tbh don't know what i'd include; all my favorite salsa is from the 70s

drash, Monday, 24 August 2015 18:21 (eight years ago) link

this exercise has taught me that "karma chameleon" isn't 80s canon

J0rdan S., Monday, 24 August 2015 19:11 (eight years ago) link

ridiculous amount of New Order in that ILM poll

Cosmic Slop, Monday, 24 August 2015 19:16 (eight years ago) link

Wanna Be Startin'.. not even featured!

piscesx, Monday, 24 August 2015 19:18 (eight years ago) link

those ilm poll results are like... good songs, but all super predictable/boring as a list, all the way down to the ones barely scraping the bottom of the top 100. have the normalizing forces of 'the canon' become so powerful even that far back that ppl were not aware of anything else from the time to vote for? i feel like ilm poll results tend to have a few more 'surprises' or w/e

i am sure the p4k list is just as bad if not worse but i don't really care enough to find out

dyl, Monday, 24 August 2015 19:40 (eight years ago) link

ha yeah I guess there were only 2 good metal songs in the 80s, both of them by Guns'n'Roses.

What's Ace of Spades?

Johnny Fever, Monday, 24 August 2015 19:49 (eight years ago) link

oh is the list called "The Only 200 Good Songs of the Entire 1980s"? I missed that.

some dude, Monday, 24 August 2015 19:50 (eight years ago) link

glad I brought you up to speed (was talking about the ILM 100 tho)

did ilxors really vote for "Anitina (The First Time I See She Dance)"

welltris (crüt), Monday, 24 August 2015 20:01 (eight years ago) link

It was probably just nominated that way, idk

Johnny Fever, Monday, 24 August 2015 20:02 (eight years ago) link

i basically hated "ace of spades" from the first time i heard it and was surprised when i found out it was like widely respected/canon

dyl, Monday, 24 August 2015 20:03 (eight years ago) link

Oh man, then Motorhead is not for you. 80% of their songs sound just like Ace of Spades.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 24 August 2015 20:04 (eight years ago) link

im not a motorhead fan but when i was a kid and first heard ace of spades on the radio it was hands down the most exciting thing i had ever heard.

you too could be called a 'Star' by the Compliance Unit (jim in glasgow), Monday, 24 August 2015 20:09 (eight years ago) link

ace of spades should be on every 80's list. also, make a circuit with me by the polecats.

ilx did get the best New Order song right at least

Number None, Monday, 24 August 2015 21:42 (eight years ago) link

P4k list definitely preferable to that ILX list, though maybe ILX 101-200 was more interesting.

List of people who are ready for woe and how we know this (seandalai), Monday, 24 August 2015 21:53 (eight years ago) link

but the rollout is only ever the top 100 if youre lucky on an ILX poll. Which is the least interesting part of polls imo

Cosmic Slop, Monday, 24 August 2015 21:55 (eight years ago) link

the rap entries on the ILX list are embarassing. not that they're bad per se - a lot of them are fun - but they are not generally representative of the amazing shit coming out of hop hop in the 80s. NWA is represented by Express Yourself, which is above Rakim I mean come on

Οὖτις, Monday, 24 August 2015 21:56 (eight years ago) link

I assume the majority of ballots were from Britishes tbh

Οὖτις, Monday, 24 August 2015 21:57 (eight years ago) link

hophop was the best

Cosmic Slop, Monday, 24 August 2015 21:57 (eight years ago) link

i doubt it. New Order is popular allover ILM plus a bunch of the UK posters jumped ship by then.

Cosmic Slop, Monday, 24 August 2015 21:58 (eight years ago) link

amazing shit coming out like hop hop

im sure an 80s poll now would be different (ie have more new order songs)

Cosmic Slop, Monday, 24 August 2015 22:06 (eight years ago) link

any specific tracks?

for sale: baby shoes, never worn your ass (katherine), Monday, 24 August 2015 22:06 (eight years ago) link

I've just been informed that Pitchfork have done a list of the best songs of the '80s. I love the music of that decade and will defend a lot of it like crazy when I come across folks (and I still do, incredibly) who (wrongly) think that the '80s is the decade that taste forgot. However, I haven't read this list and I probably won't because it's Pitchfork and I don't give a fuck.

(See also: Pazz & Jop, Robert Christgau, Rolling Stone and various other things that mean absolutely nothing to me)
