everything is said about "Written In Reverse" is actually about "The Mystery Zone". The song on the CD is 4:59 and the vinyl version is actually 5:50.

Bee OK, Saturday, 1 August 2015 18:18 (eight years ago) link

It made my ballot, just outside of the top ten.

austinato (Austin), Saturday, 1 August 2015 18:28 (eight years ago) link

why didn't I vote for this? I'm an idiot.

campreverb, Saturday, 1 August 2015 18:31 (eight years ago) link

Original from The Natural History 6:27

Bee OK, Saturday, 1 August 2015 18:53 (eight years ago) link

ha, Youtube is wrong with the time again this time with The Natural History version as it's only around 3:40 or so.

first time i have heard the original, it's nice. doesn't have the same spunk.

Bee OK, Saturday, 1 August 2015 18:55 (eight years ago) link

The main guitar part on Mystery Zone is so hypnotic, that little bit of delay on every second strum of the chord (the downstroke? Not completely sure).

Don't You Evah was my #3, the original is a cool song but Spoon's version adds so much.

Gavin, Leeds, Saturday, 1 August 2015 19:00 (eight years ago) link

this was also on my ballot.

Deceptively simple, Sister Jack. Sounds like a throwaway three chord number but there's twelve (count 'em!) chords in the verse and that neat switch to 5/4 at the end.

Spoon did "Sister Jack" better as "The Underdog," but I'm not fond of either.

naaahh, there's not even an electric guitar in the underdog!

Spottie, Saturday, 1 August 2015 19:38 (eight years ago) link

Mystery Zone has the easiest baseline to play ever. kinda hypnotic.

Spottie, Saturday, 1 August 2015 19:39 (eight years ago) link

Summon You is really good. Such great vocals/phrasing on it. Another easy one to play on guitar too :)

Spottie, Saturday, 1 August 2015 19:50 (eight years ago) link

I'll have to try that. Sister Jack is pretty easy and v satisfying. Well I guess I would say that, since I like it.

Wow.

I hate that song.

austinato (Austin), Saturday, 1 August 2015 20:10 (eight years ago) link

don't you evah and don't make me a target were the only songs i voted for off gaaaaa, curious if anything is yet to place

Roberto Spiralli, Saturday, 1 August 2015 20:18 (eight years ago) link

I think I liked the original version of "Don't You Ever" better than Spoon's, but I can't place quite why. I think it takes itself more seriously?

The Mystery Zone was my #4, love that song to bits. It really is hypnotic and, while I don't usually listen to Spoon lyrics, I like the lyrical themes of this one.

xpost nothing I voted for from Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga has placed yet. One I expect to do extremely well, the other two I'm worried fell below 40. Half of my top 10 was in the lower 15, so who knows?

Tom Violence, Saturday, 1 August 2015 20:20 (eight years ago) link

*From fan video: The song is about the guy who used to beat up Britt Daniels in middle school. For some reason, I thought it'd be a good fit.

love the tension in the song, didn't vote for it however.

Hope we see some Sneaks songs in the top 10, Quincy Punk Episode has to be there surely?

nate woolls, Saturday, 1 August 2015 20:54 (eight years ago) link

based on the albums and what we've got so far, i don't think this is a quincy punk episode kinda room

Roberto Spiralli, Saturday, 1 August 2015 20:58 (eight years ago) link

glad to see fisk squeak into top 10

"Idiot Driver" should be coming up any time now, yes?

Johnny Fever, Saturday, 1 August 2015 21:19 (eight years ago) link

i think i like "Small Steaks" better.

Bee OK, Saturday, 1 August 2015 21:26 (eight years ago) link

"Small Stakes" reminds me of early Roxy Music; maybe it's the keyboard.

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Saturday, 1 August 2015 21:33 (eight years ago) link

when i first heard small stakes (and all of ktm) i was only familiar with telephono. it was jarring and amazing. i still remember where i was.

though I saw him in line at the Pitchfork Festival's Chipotle stand in 2008 wearing cargo shorts and converse and was crushed.

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Saturday, 1 August 2015 21:48 (eight years ago) link

I'd have have been crushed solely because he was in line for Chipotle

did not know that "Lines In the Suit" was about cocaine.

"I'm on a straight line when a man comes around
And he got lines in the suit
Coming out to make us moot..."

Bee OK, Saturday, 1 August 2015 22:01 (eight years ago) link

Don't worry about it Thermo Thinwall, i have made a lot more mistakes then you have in this countdown.
