Saw One Direction this past week! Fantastic concert. They were playing videos before and in between bands and I saw Olly Murs' "Wrapped Up" for the first time. Like it a lot - I see it was a fairly big UK hit. Another example of American radio's conservatism, I think.

Astrid S
Astrid Smeplass
Oslo, Norway

a sort of Norwegian Tinashe remixed in a tropical house meets euro dance-pop sound that somehow works addictively well:

Astrid S - 2AM Matoma Remix
https://soundcloud.com/matoma-official/astrid-s-2am-matoma-remix

Spotify: Astrid S - 2AM Matoma Remix
https://open.spotify.com/track/31xSeYDJvtHtODcT6iPgkb

the original track was released October 2014, but the 2015 remix has way more plays on soundcloud.

the original track is more closer to Tinashe, Tinashe obviously sung 2 On and Astrid 2am
2 seems the magic number

Astrid S - 2am

Spotify:

so after listening to Astrid S - any fans?

Samsaya first came across my radar in 2013 with her single "Stereotype," but now the whole album is finally here and it's kind of charming in a lot of ways (and annoying in others). She's definitely a fan of Gwen Stefani, but she's not flying that flag on every track.

(Also, I guess her first album came out in 2004? That's an insanely long break between debut and sophomore albums.)

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 26 July 2015 07:23 (eight years ago) link

I couldn't make it through the whole Samsaya album as i found the charm / annoying ratio to be a little heavily weighted towards the latter but might give it another go.

I like Gold by Kiiara a lot:

i am glad i was wrong about whether lunchmoney lewis's "bills" was going to be a hit in the us

but here is a new one from him. it is very flo rida-wave -- verses with dumb lyrics + heavy-duty chorus -- but i think it mostly works b/c the hook is quite happy-sounding and not so heavy-handedly gimmicky. the nod to old miami bass in one of the bridges is also used to decent effect, which i think flo also did on one or two of his subpar singles from his first album lol

i didn't know who the featured singer was so i looked her up, i think she's part of dr. luke's arsenal of songwriters

some of her early tracks are really really awful

j. winters (josh), Monday, 10 August 2015 07:10 (eight years ago) link

Based on the four song titles I see there and the fact that her album will be called Cry Baby, the verdict is GUILTY OF ANNOYING ME.

um what is that song on the radio that's like Bruno Mars - his most famous one? they still play it all the time. Uptown Funk i think. i'm still forming my opinion.... i'm worried i like it fuck o_O

another strong bass driven track (you what i like!) with a powerful addictive pop hook chant

this track first emerged in denmark in 2013, but is now promoted by Atlantic Records / Warners for a 2015 release in the UK on July 24th. I wonder if it's on Spotify US? yet I haven't seen any US coverage of this track.

So Popjustice are raving about this Grace Mitchell track, "Jitter". The song is kind of a schizophrenic mess and that includes Mitchell's singing who, at times, sounds like Santigold and other times like ...I don't know, but something very different. However, somehow it all works. It REALLY works.

daavid, Saturday, 22 August 2015 19:48 (eight years ago) link

Lyric video is not really what that song needed. Didn't realize it was so full of dated-five-minutes-from-now slang until it was right in my face.

Johnny Fever, Saturday, 22 August 2015 20:39 (eight years ago) link

It is a little bit in some places, yes. Trying a bit too hard. But on the other hand the line "tout le monde est jittering" line makes me happy.
