I find the limited vocabulary that these bands use to choose their names from as fascinating as their emphasis on clothes, haircuts and '60s fetishism.

Not the drummer

Seaside Sons look great. Another shot:

Note that their clocks are always set to 20 past 1, just part of the enigma of the Ayrshire rockers.

A touch of random glamour:

20 past 1 again!:

I doubt she is though.

Campbell Sproat! How Ayrshire can you get!

Seaside Sons started with long-time friends Jason Skimming & Craig McGinn getting together to write songs to play as an acoustic act in 2012. It wasn’t long before they started to build a following and realised that it was time to take the music to the next level. In October of 2013, experienced guitarist Pav Cathcart and seasoned drummer Campbell Sproat both formerly of Nelson Gem, joined the band.

I think I remember a newsagents called Sproats in Kilmarnock back in the day.

Next to the Willy Low's in Onthank. Anyone?

Also, Wolf Alice are not one of those bands, so: wrong thread.

i suspected as much, but felt that their promo copy had a place here nevertheless. apologies

Ayrshire, home of the Lumpen Presyteriat (xp)

Oops, Lumpen Presbyteriat.

The Manner of Crawly (Tom D.), Friday, 19 June 2015 23:44 (eight years ago) link

i dunno i reckon i see a touch of scots physiognomy in her. but yeah, it's a fine touch that since you're not even progressive enough to have the token female indie bassist (have there been any women in the photos of thread at all??) you have to bring in some random hot babe™ to fill the gap in the photo shoot.

Merdeyeux, Friday, 19 June 2015 23:46 (eight years ago) link

Scots maybe, a fairly disparate bunch to be sure, but not Ayrshire.

The Manner of Crawly (Tom D.), Friday, 19 June 2015 23:52 (eight years ago) link

"no chicks" is second only to "button your coat right up to the neck" in terms of the immutable commandments of the genre.

everything, Friday, 19 June 2015 23:54 (eight years ago) link

lol watching the Seaside Sons video

fuckin Liam Gallagher has a lot to answer for, teaching a generation of these dork singers that standing stock still with your hands behind your back is "stage presence" and "swagger", boring ass

Flesh are pioneers of SnotPop, a smutty new hash of Britpop with splashes of their Madchester beat surroundings, grunge and cast-iron heavy metal guitars with solid pop foundations. The lads jam out tunes of hedonistic nightlife sleaze over breakbeats and sludge, fuelled by minimum-wage venting and an affinity for second hand sportswear.

With the name inspired by both the in-your-face LGBT Hacienda nights, John Waters style trash and a lack of human connection to the inevitable AI tech world take over, their sounds paint pictures of debauchery, raunch and total apathy.

Influenced by not only the guitar scene but also the filthy club environment, they pump out hard electronic remixes for each single, appearing enigmatically on limited edition CDs, with DJ sets in Europe and at nights such as Boiler Room by the members.

They sound marginally too interesting and eclectic.

the joke should be over once the kid is eaten. (chap), Monday, 29 June 2015 15:22 (eight years ago) link

posted here because it seems like an advanced baconing 102 version of all the preceding bands... which is kind of 'interesting' but also seems like it would be displeasing to everyone

i figured one of them was a Metal fan and they threw that in as a sop, but hey the OG Stone Roses used to talk a big game about their eclectic influences while they were releasing C86 b-side-alikes

that whole thing just makes me think of the happy mondays with a different set of influences. probably a total disaster but could actually be okay

kurt kobaïan (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Monday, 29 June 2015 17:31 (eight years ago) link

also digital video tech has created this bad almost "uncanny valley" middleground in band videos where bands can make videos that are too professional to be charming and too lame and cheap looking to actually look cool

kurt kobaïan (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Monday, 29 June 2015 17:34 (eight years ago) link

these guys = crap Earl Brutus, with 70s iconography replaced by 90s, judging by that video and the pictures on this thread

soref, Monday, 29 June 2015 17:42 (eight years ago) link

Yeah hearing zero heavy metal or madchester influence in that.

the joke should be over once the kid is eaten. (chap), Monday, 29 June 2015 17:47 (eight years ago) link

the OG Stone Roses used to talk a big game about their eclectic influences while they were releasing C86 b-side-alikes

actually, this is making me think of the Klaxons, who were meant to be a mix of acid house, p-funk, Tangerine Dream, Thomas Pynchon etc etc

soref, Monday, 29 June 2015 17:53 (eight years ago) link

iirc when Kasabian first came out all their proclaimed influences were hipster/namecheckable bands as well

there was a lot of beer and people doing sit ups, (laughs) (DJ Mencap), Monday, 29 June 2015 18:45 (eight years ago) link

them having a song called Avin It In Ibiza is basically what I'm talking about here, ie they're more or less the same as the other bands itt but advanced one irony level
