I for one do take "weightless" as a pejorative, unintended as it is is. Grime has gone from purpose-built MC tools to purposeless instrumentalizm: not what I'd call "advance". A form of music that once served as a vehicle for individual and social expression – explosive with individual hunger, freighted and feral with social demand - has been reborn as art-muzak. Superficially jagged and challengingly ugly; ultimately placid.
man there's just
so many weird take-it-as-given about the functions of music both generally & specifically in this

Yes - for one thing could've been written 20 years ago about hip hop. And just as false a dichotomy now as then, given the wealth of strong vocal grime itt.

if you'd read the original post its pretty clear SR was responding to a wire piece about yameneko/mr mitch etc. he clearly wasnt referring to stuff like skepta or stormzy.
surely its much more 'weird take-it-as-given' (rockist?) to propose that proper instrumental albums/structural abstraction/melodicism are somehow an 'advance' for the genre
it IS a bit ironic that reynolds wrote liner notes for planet mu's terror danjah comp, the release that probably lead to all this 'weightless' stuff. but even then, that was much more to do with planet mu removing TD from his true context as mc tools (i remember a woebot blog post at the time lamenting the choice to release only instrumental versions, unfortunately forgetting that 'cock back' and 'boogyman'aside, the vocal tunes on aftershock were generally pretty crap. still, the point stands)
i'm really enjoying the recent grime resurgence and ive been hearing some good 'proper' grime on mode fm recently, though im still yet to hear any new mcs that particularly stand out.

I listened to the Mumdance Fabric mix a few times a couple of months back and came to the conclusion that these guys are amazing sound designers/producers but not particularly interesting as writers/composers. Still, the part of me that listened to it like was an Autechre record found a lot to enjoy, these big isolated citadels of bass and shards of synth noise, but I couldn't work out the functional point of the music at all. Like, what actually happens when this stuff is played on a dancefloor? What are you actually supposed to DO to it?
As a mix in its own right it only really got into gear when the MCs appeared (and really Novelist comes across as a very pedestrian and witless MC, Riko absolutely destroyed him). And the final (stupendously enjoyable) stretch of 90s hardcore felt like a tacit admission that this scene lacks proper bangers/anthems/rollers of its own.
Cosign on the names, Dark0 really does sound like the kind of name designed to appeal to hirsute Quietus bores and no one else.
OTOH if it hadn't been for the latest revive I'd have been completely ignorant of that No Lay mixtape which I will be downloading immediately.

Flavour of the year: Korma gets checked
Just up the coast in Seattle is Korma, who with YNGN runs the new label Team Aerogel, which to date has just one, high-intensity release by the two of them, Ascension. Korma also has an EP out on Montréal's Infinite Machine label: titled ZGMF-X19A, it's full of gleaming metallophones and named after a mobile battling suit from the Gundam anime series: a union of body and technology.

!!!!!
Fabriclive 83 has been mixed by Logan Sama.
The KeepinItGrimy boss and long-time grime DJ has compiled a selection of 24 instrumentals featuring 66 MCs, including Novelist, D Double E, Ghetts and Flowdan. "To be invited to record a Fabriclive mix was a great honour," Sama says. "I wanted to make a real statement so I called up the producers I have been supporting over the last couple of years and asked them to create something special for me. I spent several months collecting acapella bars and went about building a sonic collage over my instrumental mix."
For the first time in Fabriclive history, the mix is being made available on vinyl. The quadruple-vinyl version of Fabriclive 83 contains all 24 instrumentals that feature on the CD and digital versions.
Sama adds: "Vinyl has always been an important part of grime history. It gave us the power to get our music out to the public without having to be tied in to the mainstream music industry. Being able to make our own music and then press it up directly onto vinyl was so pivotal to the growth of grime for many reasons. When I was a teenager growing up and getting into DJing something like this would have been exactly what I wanted, it’s great to be able to give people a package like this."
The launch party will take place at fabric on Friday, October 9th. Listen to Rapid's "3rd Eye," which features on the mix, below.

I was open-mouthed in awe for the first half of it, convinced that we finally had a commercial grime release that came close to capturing the intensity of the best radio sets - Kano sounds revitalised in this context, D Double still reassuringly useless in anything other than full eye-popping intensity, Scrufizzer bars amazing, clearly Black Butter aren't going to ruin him entirely. But the Jammer track seemed to be hinting at a shift up a level that never quite came, the final stretch wasn't the victory lap I'd been anticipating and it sort of ran out of steam towards the end, like he'd shunted a few of the ropiest beats and bars at the back end. Still excellent on balance though.
