had a dream just now that there was a song here that a load of ilm's dance massive responded to with an ecstatic 'tat tat tat' and i booted it up, prepared to roll my eyes, and it came in with a mighty swoosh and quite a slow 'tat tat tat' drum machine swipe, then settled into the most purely aquatic & hymnal ambient dance anthem, all was still and calm, i was back in my childhood bedroom and the walls were painted a luminous deep blue, then i awoke wondering if that song existed and whether it would make this poll

One so far though.
― Mark G, Tuesday, 31 March 2015 10:01 (nine years ago) link
"my generation" was one of my votes, and "albatross" only didn't get in because the nominee list was so long i totally missed it (which i suspect will be the case with more than a few of the upcoming picks).
― rushomancy, Tuesday, 31 March 2015 10:28 (nine years ago) link
"my generation" was much better than i thought it'd be, and although i'm not well-disposed to live versions of shorter songs making it into this poll, this is clearly something very different to the original
zercon is enormous although not the walker i voted for
― rock (Jack White, Coldplay) (imago), Tuesday, 31 March 2015 10:38 (nine years ago) link
i coulda voted for all the Walkers, but decided it was fairest to vote for just the one.
― charlie h, Tuesday, 31 March 2015 11:04 (nine years ago) link
(and the one i voted for was voted very high)
Voted for DJ Sprinkles, I'm glad it made the top 100. Nice to see Mingus here too, though "Black Saint" is not my favourite, I voted for a different track. And I was similarly confused as Charlie H on why it was nominated as a whole album, since it's clearly a multi-part suite.

a bit of confusion there with the Mingus: were people who voted for it voting for the entire album or the side-long suite, Trio and Group Dancers? i couldn't tell when i saw it on the song list, which is why i left it alone.

ugh, dislike that Les Rallizes Dénudés intensely. A dull, lo-fi guitar jam is all I hear. An epic should, you know, DO something with it's running time. Hope there's not too much more like that in the countdown.

wonder how many of these were fairly 'tactical' e.g. 'The Crown' isn't really my favourite long song ever (top 50 sure) but nbd I knew it wouldn't get much love so...
The Crown was one of the last tunes I had to cut from my shortlist to trim it down to 50, now I feel bad for leaving it out, because it is awesome.
― Tuomas, Friday, 10 April 2015 19:22 (nine years ago) link
But my vote for Biotrip wasn't tactical, I just wanted my #1 to be over 20 minutes so it's truly epic, and that's the best 20+ minute tune I know.

Actually Close to the Edge is much better than I remember, especially the organ break in the middle. The birds twittering at the end is clearly an acknowledgement of the up and coming green politics of the 1970s. "so progressiva" indeed!

i discovered the phantastic cortney tidwell track via the poll, her voice reminds me a lot of carolyn crawley (shelleyan orphan, this mortal coil), so pure and direct. "don't let stars keep us tangled up" is one of those comfort giving songs, almost like many neil young songs but in a completely different, more shining way.
the dissidenten were an offspring of embryo one of the early jazzy krautrock bands founded 1969 in munich (two years after amon düül). embryo had already been travellng a lot, they were probably the first world music band, the dissidenten which were called embryo's dissidenten in the beginning tried to appeal to a wider public and merged arab and indian music with dance pop. they were great but in the end they didn't have the success they should have had.

I've been listening to this this mix-CD I made for the car:
1. "Slipping (Into Something)," Feelies (6:00)2. "When," Grachan Moncur III (12:08)3. "Spiegel Im Spiegel," Arvo Pärt (10:38)4. "Fur Immer (Forever)," Neu! (11:17)5. "Quiet Nervousness," Manuel Göttsching (13:00)6. "How Some Jellyfish Are Born, Yo La Tengo (8:22)7. "Field of Stars," Oliver Schroer (8:15)8. "Find a Way," Feelies (7:05)
Assembled in the spirit of this poll, basically, although no strict 10-minute rule. I've never cared about streaming; I rarely listen to music when I'm sitting at the computer. Music in a car, though, life would be considerably less interesting without it--especially long songs, especially driving out in the country.

Very surprised that Blue Train is above All Blues, which I figured was a shoe-in for the top jazz track. Very surprised Deep Purple on there at all, didn't think they'd maintained a following comparable to Floyd or the Doors.
