Here's my 20:

Alice Coltrane - Los Caballos
Vladislav Delay - Anima
MFSB featuring The Three Degrees - Love Is the Message (Tom Moulton Mix)
Herbie Hancock - Hornets
Roberta Flack - I Can See the Sun in Late December

K-Hand - You and Me

The Nina Simone song is not a medley, despite the name, it combines the George Harrison song and her own composition into one whole.

Tuomas, Sunday, 1 March 2015 16:49 (nine years ago) link

Isn't that the definition of a medley?

you make me feel like danzig (WilliamC), Sunday, 1 March 2015 16:51 (nine years ago) link

Against the 80s,

Miles Davis - Shhh/Peaceful
John Coltrane - Africa

were already nominated upthread.

you make me feel like danzig (WilliamC), Sunday, 1 March 2015 16:52 (nine years ago) link

Sorry, the penultimate entry has a typo, it should read:

Psychick Warriors ov Gaia - Obsidian (Deconstructure)

(x-post)

Tuomas, Sunday, 1 March 2015 16:52 (nine years ago) link

Hallogallo has also already been nominated.

MarkoP, Sunday, 1 March 2015 16:59 (nine years ago) link

Isn't that the definition of a medley?

I dunno, in my opinion a medley goes like this: Tune A -> segue -> Tube B -> segue -> Tune C -> etc. The different tunes in the medley are mostly separate entitities, they just segue from one to another. "My Sweet Lord / Today Is a Killer", on the other hand, is basically the George Harrison tune with the Nina Simone composition (which I don't think has ever been recorded as a separate song) inserted as a short C part, after which she goes back to "My Sweet Lord" for the rest of the performance. If you're not familiar with the George Harrison's original, you wouldn't even notice the insertion, you'd think it's all one song.

Tuomas, Sunday, 1 March 2015 17:02 (nine years ago) link

Joni Mitchell, "Paprika Plains"
Fela Kuti, "Shakara"
Primal Scream, "Trainspotting"
John Coltrane, "My Favorite Things"
Ani DiFranco, "Pulse"
Spiritualized, "Won't Get To Heaven (The State I'm In)"
Beth Orton, "Galaxy of Emptiness"

chris_coolidge, Sunday, 1 March 2015 17:03 (nine years ago) link

Ah, very sorry - I misread the rules. There are a few more I repeated, I'm afraid :-(

I think this is the full set of duplicates to be removed from my list:

Yo La Tengo - Blue Line Swinger
Of Montreal - The Past is a Grotesque Animal
Neu! - Hallogallo
Neil Young - Cowgirl in the Sand
Television - Marquee Moon
Miles Davis - Shhh/Peaceful
John Coltrane - Africa

Steve Reich In The Afternoon (Against The 80s), Sunday, 1 March 2015 17:11 (nine years ago) link

Personally I'd say that "classical" is a piece of music with a score that could, theoretically, be played on "standard" instrumentation. So Arvo Part = classical, Alvin Lucier's I Am Sitting In A Room doesn't.

I totally agree with this, I don't think the Pärt piece should count. "Spiegel Im Spiegel" doesn't have any a definite length in minutes, it depends on the performance, plus it has different arrangements by Pärt too. I have one recording of it arranged for cello and piano that only lasts 9 minutes.

Tuomas, Sunday, 1 March 2015 17:11 (nine years ago) link

Rush - 2112
Bob Dylan - Brownsville Girl

10/20

kornrulez6969, Sunday, 1 March 2015 17:16 (nine years ago) link

Where does Steve Reich fit in the 'classical' debate ? If he's allowed I'll swap two of my duplicates for 'Music for a large Ensemble' and 'Octet' ...

Lou Reed & Metallica - Junior Dad

well i'm voting in this poll now

It's funny to see Steve Reich mentioned since he seems (along with some of the other big-name minimalists, & distinct from John Cage) to have reacted in a unique way to the advent of the "recorded music era", which is of course the inescapable horizon of this thread premise -- in other words, his work looks incomplete when viewed from here. But I love about 4 or 5 discs of that ginormous boxset I picked up for cheap based on ILM buzz, so I'm happy whatever we decide about his eventual eligibility for our silly little poll :P

For a second I misread the OP as Rules: song must be hard & fast & I was like, does Bathory's "Blood Fire Death" count? because it's not very fast by modern standards~

Can are so going to suffer from vote-splitting.

so then vote for more than 1 can song.
