The dude just shows up on the doorstep with nothing whatsoever to recommend him as a mate all "can I plz marry your daughter?" And the dad is like "very sorry, but I do not approve of you as a marriage partner for my daughter" and he's like "GOD! WHY ARE YOU SO RUDE! I'M A HUMAN BEING MAAAAN!"

I don't think it's a "wry mockery" but I think there's some gentle/playful self-awareness about being an unrealistic youth.

well he's admitted the original lyric was an attack on an ex-girlfriend that was altered to a more benign tale of starcrossed love, so there's definitely an awareness that he's being a candy-ass

You know how in that Sublime song the dead guy says "I can play the guitar like a motherfucking riot" and proceeds to have the worst guitar solo ever recorded? The one in this song gives that a run for the money.

I went to a club yesterday and they played these two songs next to each other. Sequence was: uptown funk, alabada bass and rude. I was sober. People were singing along. It was one of the worst experiences I've ever had in a club.
