Thanks lex and rob.

Lex it was great to see someone else voting for Cam & China and Tamar Braxton. Although I was expecting 'Gettin to It' to have at least 2 votes.

Very pleased to see Rob voting for 'Restraining Order'. That's a great number one as well.

At first I felt bad for not submitting a ballot. I felt better when I saw it wouldn't have made any difference as none of my tracks would have made the 77. But then I saw all the cool stats and features and went back to feeling bad because I'll never know which publication I'm most likely to read.

The Beano?

Cosmic Slop, Friday, 23 January 2015 19:01 (nine years ago) link

Well it's 100% funny

Dinsdale, Friday, 23 January 2015 19:12 (nine years ago) link

Funny that people are describing the Vic Mensa as 'hip-hop'; this is a house tune to me. Haven't heard any of his other stuff though.

― quinoa: how's it spelt? (dog latin), Friday, January 23, 2015 3:01 AM Bookmark Flag Post Permalink

It's definitely an outlier in his discography. Also his best song by far.

The Reverend, Friday, 23 January 2015 19:16 (nine years ago) link

Yeah, I had no idea who Vic Mensa was, so when I heard that tune I was like, this is cool house track with some off-kilter vocals, was suprised to learn he's a rapper(?).

thx Sean! Six of those placed, ayo to my neighbor Gavin in Leeds, and probably my lowest Hivemeind score yet. And apparently I'm into chamber pop, though I only voted for (at a stretch) three tracks of it.

Simon H., Friday, 23 January 2015 21:42 (nine years ago) link

forgot to vote for "2 On" but I guess it didn't matter lol

Simon H., Friday, 23 January 2015 21:43 (nine years ago) link

Yeah, interesting that "ambient" turned out to be my top genre since 2014 might have been the year (out of the last 10) where I listened to the least ambient music.

Can't remember what I voted for (seandalai?), but pretty sure the stuff that placed was:

Tinashe - 2 On
Kiesza - Hideaway
Skepta - That's Not Me
Meridian Dan - German Whip
Dej Loaf - Try Me
FKA Twigs - Pendulum

Great rollout. Loved that the two big grime tunes of the year made it. 2 On is a deserving winner.

Roz, Saturday, 24 January 2015 13:48 (nine years ago) link

That's a killer ballot. None of the tracks appeared on mine, but 10 or so would have if I'd heard them and had a little time to live with them before voting.

Must have played 'Sick Beat' about 10 times yesterday.

pandemic, Saturday, 24 January 2015 14:36 (nine years ago) link

'Sick Beat' is soooo good. Really wanna see them play this year, might try to put them on in the summer.

xpost thanks! I kind of rushed my ballot actually, but it meant I spent less time agonizing over whether or not to vote strategically.

Roz, Saturday, 24 January 2015 15:21 (nine years ago) link

The "hoy hoy hoy" in Catellena might be my favourite thing ever.

pandemic, Saturday, 24 January 2015 15:42 (nine years ago) link

They pilfered that bit from a Punjabi wedding song. :D

Roz, Saturday, 24 January 2015 15:58 (nine years ago) link

Already dissatisfied with this list as I forgot to vote for a couple of things (that I nominated!) and because I hadn't heard "Quarterback" until after casting my ballot. Weighted. What's bolded didn't place.

saer, Sunday, 25 January 2015 09:03 (nine years ago) link

Might make a playlist of Saer jams and play it in the woods behind my house later. Although walking through the woods with headphones on just feels wrong and also a bit creepy.

Matt DC, Sunday, 25 January 2015 11:28 (nine years ago) link

I posted that from a skyscraper in a city on a phone and couldnt check the spreadsheet, I am back in my natural habitat now and have been able to check the documentation and it appears I guessed my votes incorrectly as some of those dont appear, how you keep track of these things I have no idea. I think my actual votes were

Affie Yusuf - Rinse & Dry
Hinode - State of Existence
Melchior - Sightings
Benjamin Brunn - Alster Mermaid

saer, Sunday, 25 January 2015 11:56 (nine years ago) link

Although walking through the woods with headphones on just feels wrong and also a bit creepy.

Its a real problem for me as well, I like to hear a genial sound, but also if I dont take headphones, then there is the sound of the branches in the wind and the local cement factory in the distance, and who is to say which is better

seandalai, Monday, 26 January 2015 20:38 (nine years ago) link

I was delighted that Serebro picked up five votes, Dasha Charusha 3 and that i wasn't the only voter for VIA Gra. I'll happily buy all my fellow voters a drink.

These were my solo votes:

Fatima Erkenova - On Ne Tantsuyet, A On Porkhaet (5): I know next to nothing about Erkenova. I think she might be from Dagestan. I occasionally spend evenings watching amazing Kavkaz wedding dance videos on YouTube and this was the soundtrack to one of the best compilations. I've tracked down a few more of her songs and they're all excellent - a similar combination of pop hooks and intricate folk instrumentation. This inspired my first trip to the Caucasus last year. http://youtu.be/BaWdT_XHJe8

Tove Styrke - Borderline (6): Styrke's debut is one of the great electro-pop records of the last ten years but she seems to have gone in a completely different direction with her new material. Even If I'm Loud It Doesn't Mean I'm Talking To You attracted more attention but Borderline's weird quasi-reggae pop was much more addictive. http://youtu.be/7zhwihAXMlI

Elliphant ft. MØ - One More (7): Elliphant's Swedish dancehall queen persona is endearingly silly but her records are usually disappointing and i wasn't really sold on MØ's slightly drab electro last year. In combination they're a marvel, though. http://youtu.be/Sx1mHSo7ug4

Swet Shop Boys - Benny Lava (12): Heems from Das Racist and Riz Ahmed from Four Lions, Nightcrawler, etc. Kind of corny but works brilliantly with the sample. The EP is very good. http://youtu.be/gLlYykSUXLk

Emma Marrone - La Mia Citta (14): Italy's Eurovision entry - glorious glam-pop. http://youtu.be/XIV50wTsodA

SBPCH - Nelzya Skazat Koroche (15): Hypnotic Russian art-pop. I think Battles might be a close reference point. Less than 1800 views on YouTube for some reason. http://youtu.be/HXXJ8WCFuho

Brooke Candy - Opulence (21): "it's Marant or Laurent / it's McQueen or Celine / got these bitches so jealous / i hope they look good in green"

Donatan & Cleo - My Słowianie (23) Voted by the British public as the best song at Eurovision, possibly not unconnected to the amount of cleavage on display in the performance, it's a fabulous kind of ethno-pop / dancehall hybrid. "To jest ta gorąca krew, to jest nasz słowiański zew!" http://youtu.be/rr1DSgjhRqE

Far East Mention Mannequins - Fuck Boyz Get Money (24): Deeply silly Japanese pop-rap. http://youtu.be/QNtuAvGvRo8

Lyapis Trubetskoi - Voiny Sveta (25): A Belarussian group but the soundtrack of the Ukrainian Maidan revolution. Undeniably stirring in a way very little trad Russian rock is. http://youtu.be/kKJ_7SbtF4M

I'd love to know who was the other person who gave 30 points to the Mirkka & Madrugada tune, I didn't expect anyone else to vote for Brazilian forró sung and rapped in Finnish about Diego Maradona. :)

just finally got around to reading this thread, but I voted for it (well, before I lost my password and had to get a new account!) I think maybe you posted it on the rolling albums + tracks thread? I don't recall exactly where I found it, but it was a great recommendation, love the oy-oy's (not sure if they are actually saying something at that point, or just vocalizing? I sure don't speak finnish).

voted pooley no. 1, sad that more afro-pop didn't make it, where were all of the Y-Tjukutja voters!
