XPS Besides, What's Poncho-era Crazy Horse without something boneheaded?

Don A Henley And Get Over It (C. Grisso/McCain), Thursday, 18 December 2014 23:18 (nine years ago) link

i was about to defend 'stupid girl' but yeah it's garbage

languagelessness (mattresslessness), Thursday, 18 December 2014 23:29 (nine years ago) link

guitars seconded, not garbage

Root It Oot (Tom D.), Thursday, 18 December 2014 23:43 (nine years ago) link

sorry, that is just how i feel.

languagelessness (mattresslessness), Thursday, 18 December 2014 23:46 (nine years ago) link

Also stupid lyrics from Neil Young? Not exactly an unusual occurence... though less so than Lou Reed for instance.

Root It Oot (Tom D.), Thursday, 18 December 2014 23:47 (nine years ago) link

Lou Reed would have at least thrown a couple good, cruel jokes into a song called "Stupid Girl"

Οὖτις, Thursday, 18 December 2014 23:48 (nine years ago) link

It's no classic, that's for sure!

Root It Oot (Tom D.), Thursday, 18 December 2014 23:49 (nine years ago) link

stupid girl sucks because neil could do/has done so much better. he has a good heart.

but more importantly, who is going to help me slay danger bird

vigetable (La Lechera), Friday, 19 December 2014 00:49 (nine years ago) link

barstool blues is fuckin CRAZY. i burn my voice out singing to that tune

marcos, Friday, 19 December 2014 00:49 (nine years ago) link

YEAH

languagelessness (mattresslessness), Friday, 19 December 2014 00:50 (nine years ago) link

not me! ~ right in my range~

vigetable (La Lechera), Friday, 19 December 2014 00:50 (nine years ago) link

danger bird is such a dinosaur of a classic hard rock song, and i say that in the most positive way. i listen to it and i just think "heavy classic rock dinosaur" but it blows away any of the real classic rock dinosaurs

marcos, Friday, 19 December 2014 00:51 (nine years ago) link

i sing along to the barstool blues solo too. doodeedooo neerneerneerneeeeeer

languagelessness (mattresslessness), Friday, 19 December 2014 00:51 (nine years ago) link

oh totally

marcos, Friday, 19 December 2014 00:52 (nine years ago) link

also sad to see through my sails not get a ton of love. i dig that tune but i dig CSNY for the most part.

marcos, Friday, 19 December 2014 00:58 (nine years ago) link

also i think i'm gonna start saying "YOU REALLY GOT A LOT TO LEARN" whenever i disagree with someone

marcos, Friday, 19 December 2014 00:59 (nine years ago) link

think i'll start saying "I SAW YOU IN MERCEDES BENZ" when i see joe-joe in mercedes benz

$80 is absurd and very ridiculous! (Sufjan Grafton), Friday, 19 December 2014 01:36 (nine years ago) link

Maybe worse than the lyrics is the (unusual occurrence of) Neil's double vocal track - in octaves, no less (not harmony). Hate that. Definitely worst song on Zuma

Jimmywine Dyspeptic, Friday, 19 December 2014 01:48 (nine years ago) link

yeah those octaves are... not kind

languagelessness (mattresslessness), Friday, 19 December 2014 02:06 (nine years ago) link

Lou Reed would have at least thrown a couple good, cruel jokes into a song called "Stupid Girl"

Lou did of course write a song about a "Stupid Man", a man who hitch-hiked out of a good life
in Saskatchewan and who had big big plans to build a house upon some land (I mean, how stupid is that?)

Root It Oot (Tom D.), Friday, 19 December 2014 12:57 (nine years ago) link

that song is great

Οὖτις, Friday, 19 December 2014 21:29 (nine years ago) link

So who you gonna call? The martini police (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 23 March 2021 21:05 (three years ago) link

how can an album contain "Lookin' for a Love," "Don't Cry No Tears," and "Pardon My Heart"?!

So who you gonna call? The martini police (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 23 March 2021 21:05 (three years ago) link

Xpost Brad it's amazing, basically everything they did during the Zuma sessions, including Crazy Horse doing Ride My Llama,a studio Powder finger, one or two unheard songs, plus the Zuma stuff, basically like if Zuma was a double album

Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Tuesday, 23 March 2021 21:17 (three years ago) link

A very close second to Everybody/Gold Rush for me, ahead of the more celebrated Beach/Tonight. Not a song I consider less than great, even "Through My Sails."

clemenza, Tuesday, 23 March 2021 21:19 (three years ago) link

"through my sails" is one of my favorites tbh. "stupid girl" is the one i roll my eyes at a little.

John Cooper of Christian rock band Skillet (map), Tuesday, 23 March 2021 21:30 (three years ago) link

gotta hear Dume I guess

John Cooper of Christian rock band Skillet (map), Tuesday, 23 March 2021 21:36 (three years ago) link

"through my sails" sits proudly on a playlist i created called "neil young songs that make you feel some type of way"

voodoo chili, Tuesday, 23 March 2021 21:36 (three years ago) link

lol there are a lot of those

John Cooper of Christian rock band Skillet (map), Tuesday, 23 March 2021 21:37 (three years ago) link

oh nm i see what u mean

John Cooper of Christian rock band Skillet (map), Tuesday, 23 March 2021 21:37 (three years ago) link

right, it's that particular "type of way" that only the loveliest neil songs make you feel haha

voodoo chili, Tuesday, 23 March 2021 21:39 (three years ago) link

it's a vibe for sure

"total confusion
disillusion"

set to the prettiest lullabye

John Cooper of Christian rock band Skillet (map), Tuesday, 23 March 2021 21:40 (three years ago) link

*Googles Dume*

Duke, Tuesday, 23 March 2021 21:48 (three years ago) link

Ah. An Archives thing.

Duke, Tuesday, 23 March 2021 21:50 (three years ago) link

Danger Bird is so so good

charlie rex, Tuesday, 23 March 2021 21:50 (three years ago) link

I know "Stupid Girl" is not exactly made for these times. As I think others have pointed out in various Neil threads: it's about a specific woman, not women, and I don't think Neil has ever been particularly misogynistic. He's mostly starry-eyed and worshipful, which I guess is also an archaic way of treating women. In any event, I mostly just hear "Stupid Girl" as sound.

clemenza, Tuesday, 23 March 2021 22:09 (three years ago) link

Oh i know all that, still not my fav

John Cooper of Christian rock band Skillet (map), Tuesday, 23 March 2021 22:12 (three years ago) link

great song imo

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Tuesday, 23 March 2021 22:13 (three years ago) link

he's not necessarily misogynistic, just weird about women sometimes imo xp

John Cooper of Christian rock band Skillet (map), Tuesday, 23 March 2021 22:14 (three years ago) link

god the cortez on rust bucket rules so hard

brimstead, Tuesday, 23 March 2021 22:15 (three years ago) link

Danger Bird is so so good

Otm

brimstead, Tuesday, 23 March 2021 22:15 (three years ago) link

"danger bird" would've gotten my vote here if "cortez" weren't the greatest song ever written

voodoo chili, Tuesday, 23 March 2021 22:21 (three years ago) link

Lou Reed loved "Danger Bird" iirc

So who you gonna call? The martini police (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 23 March 2021 22:28 (three years ago) link

"Stupid Girl" has great unusual chord changes.

Duncan Disorderly (Tom D.), Tuesday, 23 March 2021 23:01 (three years ago) link

Plus great guitar sound/playing.

Duncan Disorderly (Tom D.), Tuesday, 23 March 2021 23:02 (three years ago) link

Young's gee-tar has never been mixed on an album to sound this crinkly and awesome

So who you gonna call? The martini police (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 23 March 2021 23:18 (three years ago) link

Pretty sure every single solitary man of his generation has problematic beliefs about how to treat women.
“Stupid Girl” does not move me and I consider it filler but easy to skip/endure when every other song is good on the album.
