I got big into it once i passed 30 and once I passed 40 it hasnt changed

Cosmic Slop, Monday, 1 December 2014 18:43 (nine years ago) link

Yeah, 30 was when it started clicking for me too. Seems to be the norm here!

EveningStar (Sund4r), Monday, 1 December 2014 18:59 (nine years ago) link

Looking back, I guess it was more 28/29.

EveningStar (Sund4r), Monday, 1 December 2014 19:00 (nine years ago) link

tbh it was the nazi association stuff that put me off investigating. It was much easier to find who was and wasnt than it was at the time

Cosmic Slop, Monday, 1 December 2014 19:09 (nine years ago) link

Just the one nom from me, it came out very recently and is great

Raspberry Bulbs - Privacy

Ratt in Mi Kitchen (Neil S), Monday, 1 December 2014 19:17 (nine years ago) link

Serpentine Path - Emanations

original bgm, Monday, 1 December 2014 21:50 (nine years ago) link

i'm 27 & enjoy some black/extreme/etc. metal as well as classic thrash like slayer but am OCCASIONALLY put off by the real dirge-y stuff or make snap judgments to not easily pursue bands/albums with names & titles that sound like third-rate lovecraft.

so what y'all are saying is in 3 years i'll be like "this shit is absolutely the move"?

*not readily pursue

hanley ramirez ordering a pizza (slothroprhymes), Monday, 1 December 2014 22:15 (nine years ago) link

many xposts to whoever mentioned this agalloch record: i quite like it thus far.

hanley ramirez ordering a pizza (slothroprhymes), Monday, 1 December 2014 22:21 (nine years ago) link

The Agalloch is excellent but maybe not quite as good as the previous 2. Not far off it mind you. Agalloch never do anything less than excellent imo. Ashes Against The Grain is quite bloody marvellous and , for me, up there with any metal album of the last 20 year,

Cosmic Slop, Monday, 1 December 2014 22:27 (nine years ago) link

xpost to talk of this years crossover hit - -Yob make the rolling stone top 50 albums of the year. I was a bit disappointed with this years Agalloch album after Marrow of the Spirit.

auto focus, Monday, 1 December 2014 22:37 (nine years ago) link

i think the band were bemused with that. It certainly was a pure wtf moment

Cosmic Slop, Tuesday, 2 December 2014 00:20 (nine years ago) link

2 days left to nominate

Cosmic Slop, Tuesday, 2 December 2014 11:22 (nine years ago) link

erm 3 days left

Interesting, I got into black metal at around 30 too. That was 2000. However by the end of the decade I got sick of it and mostly stopped, except for an occasional Enslaved and Darkthrone album. Yr 30s perhaps you encounter some truths that are far more horrifying than your 20s angst, but by 40 you're ready to leave it behind ;)

Fastnbulbous, Tuesday, 2 December 2014 15:07 (nine years ago) link

I'm 30 now, and I'm definitely much less interested in black metal than I was three years ago. A big part of that is that I'm bored with harsh vocals. I want to hear powerful and expressive sung vocals.

jmm, Tuesday, 2 December 2014 15:15 (nine years ago) link

Yes but there's only so many Sabaton records you can listen to before you crave some good oldfashioned throat-tearing roars.

Siegbran, Tuesday, 2 December 2014 15:31 (nine years ago) link

it works both ways as people get fed up with screaming/singing and seek out the opposite

Cosmic Slop, Tuesday, 2 December 2014 16:12 (nine years ago) link

i don't mind screaming, really - the death growl shit can be kinda fuckin corny though, when poorly executed.

hanley ramirez ordering a pizza (slothroprhymes), Tuesday, 2 December 2014 16:52 (nine years ago) link

speaking of the sabaton record from this year fuckin rips

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Tuesday, 2 December 2014 18:56 (nine years ago) link

catching up on some stuff i missed now after seeing it on year end lists - so far most impressed by YOB

hanley ramirez ordering a pizza (slothroprhymes), Tuesday, 2 December 2014 19:08 (nine years ago) link

It does, it's not quite Carolus Rex but it's not far off.

Siegbran, Tuesday, 2 December 2014 19:31 (nine years ago) link

Bloodbath - Grand Morbid Funeral
Coffin Dust - This Cemetery, My Kingdom
Children of Technology - Future Decay
Exordium Mors - The Apotheosis of Death
Pyrrhon - The Mother of Virtues

sure to vote for coffin dust, but i figure i oughta put the others in too

Kayo Dot - Coffins On Io
Cynic - Kindly Bent To Free Us
Have A Nice Life - The Unnatural World

One part-time metal band, one former metal band and one outfit on a metal label with crossover appeal.

ultros ultros-ghali, Tuesday, 2 December 2014 21:11 (nine years ago) link

pretty sure the last have a nice life made the poll . Kayo Dot are now Ulver clones.

Cosmic Slop, Tuesday, 2 December 2014 21:12 (nine years ago) link

Kayo Dot made a late 70s yacht prog record.

EZ Snappin, Tuesday, 2 December 2014 21:14 (nine years ago) link

Sadly true. They're my favourite band, Coffins etc is my least favourite of their releases so I'm not going to defend it too hard. The next album will be completely different probably. They are like Ulver in that sense but Kayo Dot have a far better amazing-to-dull ratio imo.

ultros ultros-ghali, Tuesday, 2 December 2014 21:28 (nine years ago) link

I really like the new record. Took a few listens to get a handle on it, but it's a keeper.

EZ Snappin, Tuesday, 2 December 2014 21:31 (nine years ago) link

Kayo Dot made a late 70s yacht prog record.

hellooooo

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Tuesday, 2 December 2014 21:37 (nine years ago) link

It's amazing Brad. Takes a few spins before it opens up.

EZ Snappin, Tuesday, 2 December 2014 21:39 (nine years ago) link

the Have A Nice Life album is so great. I stopped short of nominating them here because of the slow shoegazeyness, but it makes sense.

same story with Planning for Burial. oh heck:

Planning for Burial - Desideratum

slap 'em both on here.

Cosmic Slop, Wednesday, 3 December 2014 12:30 (nine years ago) link

I really like the Kayo Dot but I don't think it's metal at all, even by a broad definition. Closer to a cross between "yacht-prog" and 80s goth or something.

Haikai No Ku - Ultra High Dimensionality
Shroud of The Heretic - Revelations In Alchemy
Cold World - How The Gods Chill
Bastard Sapling - Instinct Is Survival
Ghast - Dread Doom Ruin
Nazaronai - the most painful time happens only once has it arrived already..?
Amulet - The First
Henry Blacker - Hungry Dogs Will Eat Dirty Puddings
Pig Heart Transplant - For Mass Consumption

proper maoist (DJ Mencap), Wednesday, 3 December 2014 14:41 (nine years ago) link

how the gods chill - is this some kind of epicurean concept album

j., Wednesday, 3 December 2014 14:46 (nine years ago) link

if by that you mean "a 90s NYC metalcore throwback" then heck yes

check it out on bandcamp to confirm that no-one else will vote for it

proper maoist (DJ Mencap), Wednesday, 3 December 2014 15:32 (nine years ago) link

I really liked Focus when I listened to it. I gather that the new Cynic is more of a straight-up prog/fusion thing, without the extreme metal elements? Will try it. Listening to Blut aus Nord atm.

EveningStar (Sund4r), Wednesday, 3 December 2014 17:14 (nine years ago) link

Ha, not sure what "straight-up prog/fusion" even really means tbh.

EveningStar (Sund4r), Wednesday, 3 December 2014 17:14 (nine years ago) link

New Cynic's like slightly proggy AOR with some fusion licks, really. I kind of enjoyed it but haven't listened to it much.

I just thought I'd throw in some relative curveballs yesterday and see if anything sticks.

ultros ultros-ghali, Wednesday, 3 December 2014 17:20 (nine years ago) link

*to see if anything stuck. English is my first language, I swear.

ultros ultros-ghali, Wednesday, 3 December 2014 17:21 (nine years ago) link

Am totally up for hearing Cynic play an Alan Parsons Project album. Loading now.

EveningStar (Sund4r), Wednesday, 3 December 2014 17:25 (nine years ago) link

Ha, this is reminding me a bit of King's X.

EveningStar (Sund4r), Wednesday, 3 December 2014 17:28 (nine years ago) link

Midnight - No Mercy for Mayhem

digging this more and more, feeling like a sleazy nihilist, thinking of going knife shopping

j., Wednesday, 3 December 2014 18:47 (nine years ago) link

new cynic album unfortunately lacks the hooks to function as aor i think

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Wednesday, 3 December 2014 18:53 (nine years ago) link

wonder what the tabloids had to stoke fear with before heavy metal?

Cosmic Slop, Wednesday, 3 December 2014 18:55 (nine years ago) link

Yeah, I got bored 15m in or so. I had trouble seeing how the compositions came together. The singer was OK but I wanted the vocals to be stronger and more expressive.
xpost

EveningStar (Sund4r), Wednesday, 3 December 2014 18:56 (nine years ago) link

Primordial are rapidly shooting up to the top of the year for me. It's one of the only albums (Against Me! is another) I find lyrically affecting, like a thousand-yard-stare down bloody centuries.

jmm, Wednesday, 3 December 2014 19:03 (nine years ago) link

seemed ponderous to me, i gave it a pass

would be nice to be able to get with a 1000-yd-century-stare tho, who doesn't love that
