I wonder if he repurposes the cut he gets from donations direct to him and/or Nataly?

fwiw every touring act i know who has successfully leveled up from the 500ish capacity rooms pomplamoose was apparently selling out on this tour to 1000-2000 capacity rooms had to do money-losing tours in order to do it

a lot of bands operating at their level who can do so successfully are either major label baby bands who get tour support or canadian indie acts who can get arts grants to tour the US

not to get into a whole thing about it but of all the aspects of this band's career that can be called out as ridiculous i personally don't think those tour expenses are all that weird for a band at their level doing what they're trying to do

Patreon was founded in May 2013 by artist Jack Conte, who was looking for a way to make a living from his popular YouTube videos. Together with Sam Yam he developed a platform that allows patrons to donate a set amount of money every time an artist creates a work of art. The company raised $2.1 million in August 2013 from a group of venture capitalists and angel investors. In June 2014 the company raised a further $15 million in a series A round led by Danny Rimer of Index Ventures.

In late 2014, the website announced that patrons were sending over $1 million per month to the site's content creators.Patreon takes a 5% commission on pledges.

Maybe this is as big as Pomplamoose gets. Maybe the act has already peaked. Like PSY but on a smaller level.

He's missing the point that Conte's post is not primarily about touring or bands or anything. It's another one of their endless pitches for the fanbase to keep sending them cash - the blog post itself is a product of the new music business reality that Lefsetz is always going on about. Pomplamoose are like cult leaders always asking their flock for donations to fix the church roof all the while stuffing wads of cash into their cassocks.

^^ otm. this is a televangelism tactic.

alpine static, Thursday, 27 November 2014 21:24 (nine years ago) link

Yeah god why didn't I think of that televangalist comparison but the whole Amanda Palmer think is so much more comparable to Jimmy & Tammy Faye Baker than anything in the music sphere

like seriously, just put an OREOS banner behind this setlist, that will cover expenses i'm sure

this will detract from their core message of getting that body back

God, watching them play makes me never want to play music in front of other people. Like, what if I was playing a show and accidentally came out looking/sounding like that without realizing it.

I find Jack especially painful to watch, it's like he has neither a sincere nor a sinister bone in his body, like a pod person who only learned to imitate zaniness.

Here is an interview published in USA Today, in which I explain that I’m still not taking a salary as CEO even after our $15 million round in venture financing, but rather I’m living off of my income as an artist.

how noble

"I'd have all these views, but at the end of the month I'd check my ad revenue (off his YouTube channel) and I'd get a check for like $6, or $10," says Conte, 30.

So after watching those live videos, I think whatever expenses / losses they've taken on were absolutely necessary if they really want to try to turn this horrible fake-band that no one truly cares about into anything even remotely resembling a real band with real fans.

alpine static, Tuesday, 2 December 2014 17:02 (nine years ago) link

There's no way he only gets $6 dollars a month on 100M yt views. Dude is full of bullshit or he really really sucks at managing money. And at making music.
