So who ARE that insufferable indie couple in the new Hyundai TV ads?

How much do you reckon it would cost us for them to stop making videos?

Most amazing thing about the Poomplamoose tour breakdown thing is that I've learned there are people who would actually pay to see Poomplamoose.

We built the tour budget ourselves and modeled projected revenue against expenses. Neither of us had experience with financial modeling, so we just did the best we could.

why run a 20+ stop tour without hard projections? you have a booking agent, who you thank profusely, but you didn't think management might be necessary? ending a tour 12k in the hole is completely insane. the numbers in play there sound either entirely facetious or the dumbest kind of rookie mistakes.

also you are apparently founder of like some well funded startup are you kidding me with this aw shucks what are all these numbers how does dollar work

celfie tucker 48 (s.clover), Wednesday, 26 November 2014 16:59 (nine years ago) link

Yeah it really reads like he thought it was ok to put no thought whatsoever into what made financial sense on tour (bc you know, it's an investment in future tours!). He sounds like one of those people taking out a giant HELOC to put in a new open plan kitchen with viking range and wine fridge in a middle class neighborhood, or buying a $2000 suit for job interviews. Which would just seem dumb, except the whole Patreon thing makes it actually seem disingenuous. It's like their business model depends on making sure people don't think they're making a lot of money.

my jaw left (Hurting 2), Wednesday, 26 November 2014 17:00 (nine years ago) link

to be clear, i think that whole piece is a fig leaf of the amanda palmer variety to maintain a public persona of "WE CAN'T DO IT WITHOUT YOU"
one of the big problems with the "our fans will support us" model is that when you start showing up in hyundai commercials, your fans start saying "oh, i guess they're paid; my six dollar a month patreon donation doesn't matter" which leads promptly to public television cries of "we haven't MADE IT we're MAKING IT... with your help"

I'm going to pay 1000 people $5 to watch me pay guitar for 3 mins at the fillmore and then be all like, "yeah, I sold 1000 seats at the fillmore at $30 a ticket, but I had $35,000 of overhead". I'm still making it you could say.

Just realized that Jack Conte is the FOUNDER of that Patreon site. Sorry if that was posted upthread and I missed it. So he gets a cut of every other campaign that's on the website. Yeah, he's really hurting for dough, send him your $$$$.

fwiw every touring act i know who has successfully leveled up from the 500ish capacity rooms pomplamoose was apparently selling out on this tour to 1000-2000 capacity rooms had to do money-losing tours in order to do it

a lot of bands operating at their level who can do so successfully are either major label baby bands who get tour support or canadian indie acts who can get arts grants to tour the US

not to get into a whole thing about it but of all the aspects of this band's career that can be called out as ridiculous i personally don't think those tour expenses are all that weird for a band at their level doing what they're trying to do

Patreon was founded in May 2013 by artist Jack Conte, who was looking for a way to make a living from his popular YouTube videos. Together with Sam Yam he developed a platform that allows patrons to donate a set amount of money every time an artist creates a work of art. The company raised $2.1 million in August 2013 from a group of venture capitalists and angel investors. In June 2014 the company raised a further $15 million in a series A round led by Danny Rimer of Index Ventures.

In late 2014, the website announced that patrons were sending over $1 million per month to the site's content creators.Patreon takes a 5% commission on pledges.

He's missing the point that Conte's post is not primarily about touring or bands or anything. It's another one of their endless pitches for the fanbase to keep sending them cash - the blog post itself is a product of the new music business reality that Lefsetz is always going on about. Pomplamoose are like cult leaders always asking their flock for donations to fix the church roof all the while stuffing wads of cash into their cassocks.

Yeah god why didn't I think of that televangalist comparison but the whole Amanda Palmer think is so much more comparable to Jimmy & Tammy Faye Baker than anything in the music sphere

Here is an interview published in USA Today, in which I explain that I’m still not taking a salary as CEO even after our $15 million round in venture financing, but rather I’m living off of my income as an artist.
