While I don't exactly *like* them, in the sense that I never find myself actively wanting to listen to them other than in the context of "what the fuck are they up to this time," they are kind of ingenious. I can't help but admire them a little in spite of all their insufferability.

my jaw left (Hurting 2), Thursday, 30 October 2014 03:18 (nine years ago) link

I mean honestly if everything they did wasn't so completely consumed by forced, painful smirkiness, they could be good imo.

my jaw left (Hurting 2), Thursday, 30 October 2014 04:12 (nine years ago) link

She has a certain way of looking at the camera which is unaccountably irritating. Without that, they'd just be innocuous.

jmm, Thursday, 30 October 2014 04:22 (nine years ago) link

Actually I find the guy's goofball antics to be even more annoying. But those 'tudes bleed a little into the music too.

my jaw left (Hurting 2), Thursday, 30 October 2014 04:23 (nine years ago) link

They actually remind me a lot of this, which I like

They still have this giddy freshmen staying up too late in the dorm lounge thing that I wish they would grow out of. I really think musically they are amazing at times, and very clever with their videos and such.

my jaw left (Hurting 2), Thursday, 30 October 2014 04:24 (nine years ago) link

oh heh, guess we discussed B&B multiple times upthread, including me specifically discussing how I did NOT like that record at the time. Memory is frail.

I mean, it's not like I would buy their records, but over the years I've grown to look forward to this thread getting bumped. I find them irritating in many ways, but it's a very pleasant form of irritation.

Eyeball Kicks, Thursday, 30 October 2014 09:59 (nine years ago) link

I like the music he makes in that video, but she is as irritating as ever.

These two make the current wave of indietronica (i.e. "Hip™ for basics") being discussed in the "high-selling singles" thread seem gritty and likable and REAL

alpine static, Thursday, 30 October 2014 10:10 (nine years ago) link

when they weren't twee-ifying r&b, they weren't bad live

maura, Thursday, 30 October 2014 10:53 (nine years ago) link

they're a reminder that you can be in some sense objectively talented and also sorta terrible.

speaking of which have we discussed the postmodern jukebox ppl anywhere?

Postmodern Jukebox made Maroon 5's "Maps" listenable, so they can do all the Jessica Rabbit covers they like and I'll still support them.

There's also something a little claustrophobic and sad about the "from our basement to yours" vibe they create.

my jaw left (Hurting 2), Monday, 10 November 2014 19:05 (nine years ago) link

otm.

Now I am trying to imagine them covering anything off of The Basement Tapes.

Despite this being Pomplamoose, and definitely despite the song being named "The Internet Is Awesome," I sort of unabashedly like this one. *shrug*

is it a reworking of 'the internet is for porn'?

holy shit, that woman in the Maps video can sing. and that is all that I will say about her here in this public forum ... yup ... that's all.

alpine static, Tuesday, 11 November 2014 06:09 (nine years ago) link

I don't get why they went with such shitty sounding drums in that, otherwise not bad.

my jaw left (Hurting 2), Tuesday, 11 November 2014 06:12 (nine years ago) link

This dude has been killing the stylized cover game since maps were in diapers tho

I don't get why they went with such shitty sounding drums in that, otherwise not bad.

Recording everything live in a little room like that is an absolute nightmare. The biggest problem is that the drums end up in *everything*. I'm guessing that most of the drum sound you hear in that track is actually bleed being picked up in other mics - if they turned the drum mics up it'd overwhelm everything.

I tried to do what they did (live band in a small room with a camera on the wall, not sultry retro pastiche) and we had to put big bits of carpet off-cuts on the drums to deaden them. Did interesting things to the cymbals...

the_ecuador_three, Tuesday, 11 November 2014 10:11 (nine years ago) link

I don't know what you're talking about, I effing love that drum sound (except for the hi-hats)

Wow, lady in that postmodern jukebox video plays Teena Marie and others in the Motown show on Broadway.

all these puddles the clown videos are pretty great

everybody loves lana del raymond (s.clover), Tuesday, 11 November 2014 16:38 (nine years ago) link

9,000,000 views for that clown video, which probably nets them at least $50,000. A lot of that is going to Lorde or whoever, but this must be one of the most profitable ways to make money nowadays.

Eyeball Kicks, Tuesday, 11 November 2014 19:20 (nine years ago) link

to make music, I mean, but yeah also money

puddles is selling out shows in NYC; he's become a pretty serious draw on the nu-cabaret scene
i've seen him live a time or two, dude can sing

i'm simultaneously happy for puddles and resigned/not-really-surprised/but-kinda-surprised/but-what-did-i-expect with regards to the existence of a thing that is called the "nu-cabaret scene" such that it has shows that can sell out.

deej loaf (D-40), Wednesday, 19 November 2014 06:04 (nine years ago) link

Why don't they include youtube streaming income in income?

my jaw left (Hurting 2), Monday, 24 November 2014 22:46 (nine years ago) link

I mean it seems weird to mention income from itunes sales but not that

my jaw left (Hurting 2), Monday, 24 November 2014 22:47 (nine years ago) link

Then again, it may not be a huge source -- they have 100 million views but it's spread out over 5 + years, and I think the per view payment is pretty low.

my jaw left (Hurting 2), Monday, 24 November 2014 22:51 (nine years ago) link

maybe they don't get much because they don't write the songs they're playing

da croupier, Monday, 24 November 2014 22:56 (nine years ago) link

i can't believe i actually read a "we haven't made it, we're making it" article for a cover band

da croupier, Monday, 24 November 2014 22:59 (nine years ago) link

I was kinda surprised they aren't pulling in more money by now tbh. I mean we must have hit peak pamplemousse, I would think, and they seem like pretty much the kings of the lolcover.

my jaw left (Hurting 2), Monday, 24 November 2014 23:00 (nine years ago) link

i wonder how many cover bands put six people on salary for a month-long tour

da croupier, Monday, 24 November 2014 23:02 (nine years ago) link

Probably the kind of bands that are just two people and need to hire backup musicians who aren't invested in the band

my jaw left (Hurting 2), Monday, 24 November 2014 23:04 (nine years ago) link

We, the creative class, are finding ways to make a living making music, drawing webcomics, writing articles, coding games, recording podcasts. Most people don’t know our names or faces. We are not on magazine covers at the grocery store. We are not rich, and we are not famous.

We are the mom and pop corner store version of “the dream.” If Lady Gaga is McDonald’s, we’re Betty’s Diner. And we’re open 24/7.

We have not “made it.” We’re making it.

And by it we mean "Pharrell Mashup."

da croupier, Monday, 24 November 2014 23:04 (nine years ago) link

do they really need four extra salaried musicians? Wouldn't loops be more charming and appropriate to their shtick?

da croupier, Monday, 24 November 2014 23:06 (nine years ago) link

Their expenses are definitely a little lavish for "DIY" -- they have their own lights, there's obviously no couch surfing going on, etc.

I can't help but think they're lying and stashing the rest of their profits in the Cayman Islands somewhere, I just smell it on them.

my jaw left (Hurting 2), Monday, 24 November 2014 23:06 (nine years ago) link

oh missed this bit

We could have played a duo show instead of hiring six people to tour with us. That would have saved us over $50,000, but it was important at this stage in Pomplamoose’s career to put on a wild and crazy rock show.

da croupier, Monday, 24 November 2014 23:07 (nine years ago) link

The idea that they're just "investing in future tours" also made me snicker a little too, seems very foolish if that's legitimately what they think they're doing.

my jaw left (Hurting 2), Monday, 24 November 2014 23:07 (nine years ago) link

Like it's hard for me to imagine them getting tons bigger than they are now.

my jaw left (Hurting 2), Monday, 24 November 2014 23:07 (nine years ago) link

i just can't understand why they bothered to write this article. "hey guys we're not as rich as you think." ...good?
