Bruce Hornsby's 'Mandolin Rain' is very bittersweet too.

Ashamed to say, 'A Long December' by C*unting Cr*ws

I will second "The Way It Is" -- that song really makes me feel better about life

my jaw left (Hurting 2), Monday, 20 October 2014 16:40 (nine years ago) link

two years pass...

I heard Walter Egan's "Magnet and Steel" on the radio yesterday and it sounded unbearably poignant in spite of being completely corny and Walt's resemblance to Willie Aames

Kiss From a Rose rules this thread.

Whoa yeah it does

frogbs, Tuesday, 10 January 2017 16:13 (seven years ago) link

I also learned that Walter Egan wrote "Hearts on Fire" which I also love for its lyrical and melodic corniness.
The "sleep escapes me still" part always gets me

I must be in a sentimental mood

"Baker Street" has to qualify just because saxophone

I Love You, Climax Blues Band

kornrulez6969, Tuesday, 10 January 2017 17:07 (seven years ago) link

I listened to some additional Walter Egan songs and they are TERRIBLE. "Tunnel O'Love" has to be one of the worst songs I've heard in a long time. Not even Stevie can save it.

OMG I cry like a monster when I hear "The Rose"

weird woman in a bar (La Lechera), Tuesday, 10 January 2017 17:07 (seven years ago) link

which is a suuuuuper-cornball song but the basic chords and melody structure + fairly minimal arrangement + soaring gospel choir + self-pitying/self-help tenor of the lyrics totally do it for me. I have clear memories of hearing this song really young, which I'm sure also contributes to it.

Cathy Dennis - 'Too Many Walls', Anita Baker - 'Giving You the Best That I've Got'

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 10 January 2017 17:24 (seven years ago) link

ok this is embarrassing but just recently "Call and Answer" by the Barenaked Ladies got me

frogbs, Tuesday, 10 January 2017 17:25 (seven years ago) link

'Rainbow Connection' AND 'Bein' Green'

Gorvernment Stoodge (Old Lunch), Tuesday, 10 January 2017 17:27 (seven years ago) link

'An Innocent Man'. My brother and I belted out an intense and half-drunken pseudo karaoke duet of same at Christmas, which I just now remembered that my mom filmed for posterity.

oh come on!

Another: "Could It Be Magic" Barry Manilow

I was gonna start a thread on the most melodramatic pop songs. "Total Eclipse of the Heart" being the obvious champ. My #2 would be "Making Love Out of Nothing At All" , Air Supply

rip van wanko, Wednesday, 11 January 2017 00:30 (seven years ago) link

So far you're just starting a Jim Steinman thread.
