"say you love me" wins the thread

out of cyndi's songs i think "true colors" would be my choice for corny-yet-moving quality

pisceboy said so on the thread too

And as for fortune and as for fame
I never invited them in
Though it seemed to the world
They were all I deserved
They are illusions
They're not the solutions
They promise to be
The answer was here all the time
I love you and hope you love me

Acting Crazy (Instrumental) (jed_), Sunday, 19 October 2014 22:40 (nine years ago) link

although it's Sinead O'Connor's version that i love, really.

'Ruby, Don't Take Your Love to Town' - Kenny Rogers and the First Edition

Bloody Snail, Monday, 20 October 2014 08:31 (nine years ago) link

Corny as in sentimental, or corny as in full of melodic and lyrical cliches? I am a sucker for the former and cry pretty much on cue. Same with movies.

Dr X O'Skeleton, Monday, 20 October 2014 13:45 (nine years ago) link

i could easily see why someone might think dylan's "brownsville girl" is corny as fuck but i'm moved to tears most times i hear that song, it's so captivating, everything about it. the lyrics, the stories he tells in it, the background singers, the huge drums, the sax solo, i just think it's a complete masterpiece. i know i'm not alone in that though, it has tons of devotees.

"Game of Love" - Santana and Michelle Branch. Love her voice on this.

calstars, Monday, 20 October 2014 15:15 (nine years ago) link

The answer is "landslide". I am a lost little bawling baby when I hear that song.

Good one, calstars. There's a bunch of late '90s/early '00s minor key pop songs that I only ever heard in passing and over PA systems, like, at work and in student unions that always made me feel a little melancholy (e.g. "Barely Breathing"). They lost a little of their magic once I heard them over something other than tinny speakers playing in the distance.

Also, "Adia" kinda fucks me up. And "Anything For You" by Miami Sound Machine.

What Lies Behind The Beehive? (Old Lunch), Monday, 20 October 2014 15:28 (nine years ago) link

i don't think there is anything corny about landslide!!

marcos, Monday, 20 October 2014 15:28 (nine years ago) link

Bruce Hornsby's 'Mandolin Rain' is very bittersweet too.

Ashamed to say, 'A Long December' by C*unting Cr*ws

MaresNest, Monday, 20 October 2014 16:36 (nine years ago) link

I will second "The Way It Is" -- that song really makes me feel better about life

two years pass...

I heard Walter Egan's "Magnet and Steel" on the radio yesterday and it sounded unbearably poignant in spite of being completely corny and Walt's resemblance to Willie Aames

Kiss From a Rose rules this thread.

Whoa yeah it does

frogbs, Tuesday, 10 January 2017 16:13 (seven years ago) link

I also learned that Walter Egan wrote "Hearts on Fire" which I also love for its lyrical and melodic corniness.
The "sleep escapes me still" part always gets me

I must be in a sentimental mood

"Baker Street" has to qualify just because saxophone

I Love You, Climax Blues Band

kornrulez6969, Tuesday, 10 January 2017 17:07 (seven years ago) link

I listened to some additional Walter Egan songs and they are TERRIBLE. "Tunnel O'Love" has to be one of the worst songs I've heard in a long time. Not even Stevie can save it.

OMG I cry like a monster when I hear "The Rose"

weird woman in a bar (La Lechera), Tuesday, 10 January 2017 17:07 (seven years ago) link

which is a suuuuuper-cornball song but the basic chords and melody structure + fairly minimal arrangement + soaring gospel choir + self-pitying/self-help tenor of the lyrics totally do it for me. I have clear memories of hearing this song really young, which I'm sure also contributes to it.

'An Innocent Man'. My brother and I belted out an intense and half-drunken pseudo karaoke duet of same at Christmas, which I just now remembered that my mom filmed for posterity.
