Daft Punk is my favorite but Weird Al gets the vote for longevity.

ranking the #1 albums that i've heard:
Weird Al > Pink > Foo Fighters > Robin Thicke > Daft Punk > Matchbox 20 > Gary Allan > Tom Petty
as far as the acts themselves, though, which i guess is the thread, Tom Petty narrowly over Weird Al and Pink

I'm not sure what to call it -- a post-iTunes culture that allows established acts with fervent fanbases to top the Billboard 200 with sales weeks that wouldn'tve reached the top 5 when their first albums came out (while the industry crumbled around them). Let's call it EAWFF (established acts with fervent fanbases).
Cake – EAWFFThe Foo Fighters - EAWFF Jill Scott – EAWFFTony Bennett – EAWFFMatchbox 20 – earlier peak occurred when boy bands were selling millions a weekPink – earlier peak occurred when boy bands were selling millions a week Chris Tomlin – not familiar enough Gary Allan – not familiar enoughDaft Punk – EAWFF plus Queens Of The Stone Age – EAWFFBlack Sabbath – EAWFFRobin Thicke – huge hit single released well in advanceThe Black Keys – legit gradual growth in popularitySia – legit gradual growth in popularity "Weird" Al Yankovic – EAWFFTom Petty & The Heartbreakers – EAWFF

i don't even like metal but how is this not Black Sabbath in a landslide? hope my vote helps it along.

Seems like quite a few are just artists whose fervent fan base is still old enough to be in the generation that even considers buying music in an album format (digital or physically)? Guys over 40 or so who might buy the new Tom Petty or Sabbath or Foo Fighters album, but generally don't buy or otherwise seek out music.

Voting for Weird Al. Someone has to.

after a mid-decade slum Pink's been at the peak of her career since "So What."

*slump
FYI the downturn of the industry helping established mid level and cult acts rise to the top is exactly why I made the poll

While it makes the victory a little phyrric, I like the "congrats, someone still cares" aspect

Omg iPhone didn't tell me I misspelled pyrrhic

oh yeah I think I got the motivation behind the poll, it's really interesting - just curious about how exactly it works out this way. I wonder what the hard data is on who still buys albums agewise and even regionally.
Seems insane Tom Petty's getting his first number one in 2014, but it kind of makes total sense too. Just seems like a hugely interesting lens to look at how the industry has changed.

Damn The Torpedos hit #2 and so did Mojo, with a few Top 5s in between, so its definitely a bit of a quirk this is his first #1

i thought the same but i haven't heard the album yet

I haven't heard it, but I thought the consensus on the new Sabbath reunion album is that it's bad.
― Johnny Fever, Thursday, 7 August 2014 15:58 (nine years ago) link
this poll is best act, not best album, though, right?
― some dude, Thursday, 7 August 2014 16:04 (nine years ago) link
"Weird Al" just over QOTSA.
― how's life, Thursday, 7 August 2014 16:06 (nine years ago) link
OK, like a mile over QOTSA.
It is. I was just making a side observation.
― Johnny Fever, Thursday, 7 August 2014 16:09 (nine years ago) link
i was thinking best act, but as per usual personally i don't care if you go with best act, album, haircut, whatevs. assuming i don't forget or the chart collapses entirely i'll probably revive the thread any time somebody new gets the honor
― da croupier, Thursday, 7 August 2014 16:10 (nine years ago) link
Best act would be Sabbath for me, best album Daft Punk.
No idea if I should vote for the former?
― Moka, Thursday, 7 August 2014 16:53 (nine years ago) link
Oh ok best act it is.
Sab.

tempted by QOTSA but feels churlish to pick them over sab
big drop-off after that for me, to some lifers where a little goes a long way

oddly enough, none of the artists on the Guardians of the Galaxy OST (the current #1) have ever scored a #1 album in the US, with Bowie reaching a career peak of #2 last year with The Next Day.
