absolutely. agreed.

there's such a sense of modesty and understated melancholy in the lyrics that is somehow so much more effective than someone righteously spelling out every single shred of heartbreak they feel.

A couple of the piano ballads strike me as very Ben Folds-y, but I mean that in the best possible way.

bernard snow (sixteen sergeants), Tuesday, 26 September 2006 10:54 (eighteen years ago) link

I love this album.

Marty Innerlogic (marty innerlogic), Tuesday, 26 September 2006 11:00 (eighteen years ago) link

hahh. 'stray dog and the chocolate shake' is so hilariously catchy

Charlie Howard (the sphinx), Tuesday, 26 September 2006 11:10 (eighteen years ago) link

that's a great song; Jason Lytle is great at detailing the interior thought processes of animals. "fambly cat" is a slightly disappointing album for them to go out on, but it does have a handful of great songs, like "where I'm anywhere", which also details the thought processes of an animal

kyle (akmonday), Tuesday, 26 September 2006 12:21 (eighteen years ago) link

so what are they going to do now? do they have any music projects going on?

joan vich (joan vich), Tuesday, 26 September 2006 16:28 (eighteen years ago) link

I think jason is going to keep doing stuff but not under that name. he's been touring.

kyle (akmonday), Tuesday, 26 September 2006 17:04 (eighteen years ago) link

i guess grandaddy really was "the jason lytle show" so i'm not too worried about the breakup. he'll keep giving us good music one way or another.

Squirrel_Police (Squirrel_Police), Tuesday, 26 September 2006 19:25 (eighteen years ago) link

"Sumday" is OK. Sort of their attempt to do a rather normal catchy pop album. Could almost have passed as soft-rock in the 70s. Nice enough anyway.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Tuesday, 26 September 2006 22:34 (eighteen years ago) link

they are one of the most boring live acts ever.

Fetchboy (Felcher), Tuesday, 26 September 2006 22:41 (eighteen years ago) link

well they aren't around to bore you now

I loved their shows

kyle (akmonday), Tuesday, 26 September 2006 22:49 (eighteen years ago) link

were excellent when i caught them in paris. it helped to know all the songs i guess

Charlie Howard (the sphinx), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 09:09 (eighteen years ago) link

seeing them live kinda put me off them for ever (qv also godspeed you black emperor): i'm with fetchboy.

i loved "sophtware slump" so much that everything since has been a bitter disappointment. AND I'VE BOUGHT THEM ALL, JUST IN CASE. fucking hell.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 21:15 (eighteen years ago) link

sumday has very recently taken top spot from sophtware in my view

Charlie Howard (the sphinx), Thursday, 5 October 2006 14:06 (eighteen years ago) link

xxxxpost
Grandaddy were the antithesis of boring to me.

Leeds festival three years back- after stood in a field for three days , witnessing 'punk' (please) careerists preach their goodness - Grandaaddy were a welcome breath of fresh air and wholesome goodness.

"Sophtware" has a dynamic depth to it that for me will always keep it above "Sumday". But "Sumday" is still a nice album, and seemingly better than this year's effort.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Saturday, 7 October 2006 15:21 (eighteen years ago) link

ZOMG, this album still rules

the slowest of growers.

but this is ten times the album 'the sophtware slump' is. it's just heartbreakingly good. and to think i dismissed it the first few times i listened to it.

joekin' phoenix (country matters), Tuesday, 10 November 2009 17:31 (fourteen years ago) link

I don't think I could disagree more. I always felt like Sumday really simplified and streamlined the best parts of Sophtware Slump. Its a great little album, but I feel like it misses some of the unexpectedness of the previous.

& other try hard shitfests (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Tuesday, 10 November 2009 17:33 (fourteen years ago) link

it took the emotional cortex of TSS and turned it into a panoramic, low-key immersion within such depths, only haltingly explored beforehand. it works really well as an album, and the songs feed from one another.

joekin' phoenix (country matters), Tuesday, 10 November 2009 17:36 (fourteen years ago) link

meh, i thought this album was a total disappointment. sophtware slump's 100x better and so is under the western freeway. the earlier eps are better too. sumday is when i stopped following this band

mark cl, Tuesday, 10 November 2009 17:38 (fourteen years ago) link

sumday > fambly cat >> western freeway >>>> slump

they matured like oak or something else that matures

joekin' phoenix (country matters), Tuesday, 10 November 2009 17:40 (fourteen years ago) link

you are so wrong

cutty, Tuesday, 10 November 2009 17:42 (fourteen years ago) link

and i really like sumday. no way it's better than sophtware.

cutty, Tuesday, 10 November 2009 17:43 (fourteen years ago) link

sophtware has high highs but aside from the first track and the last two tracks (which are basically one awesome 10-minute track) there's nothing which hits me like basically all of sumday does. sumday's weakest two tracks are the first two, and they were the singles! i mean they're still really good, but from 3 onward it's just this sumptuous, tragic ode to loss...it hits me where it hurts, y'know

joekin' phoenix (country matters), Tuesday, 10 November 2009 17:58 (fourteen years ago) link

you have suffered so much loss

cutty, Tuesday, 10 November 2009 18:04 (fourteen years ago) link

It is a beautiful and sad album, but not as beautiful and sad as the one before it, thats all!

& other try hard shitfests (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Tuesday, 10 November 2009 18:07 (fourteen years ago) link

we are learning some basic lessons here, jagger. lesson one is always be positive about what you want to be positive about. lesson two is don't be negative to something other than what you are being positive about in order to make what you are being positive about seem better. with these two simple lessons you too can be a happy friendly ilxor and not get sb'd again

joekin' phoenix (country matters), Tuesday, 10 November 2009 18:09 (fourteen years ago) link

so yeah, sumday is awesome! anyone got a favourite track? mine is 'lost on yer merry way' which is beautiful and epic

joekin' phoenix (country matters), Tuesday, 10 November 2009 18:10 (fourteen years ago) link

are you talking to yourself man, shit

cutty, Tuesday, 10 November 2009 18:10 (fourteen years ago) link

. I always felt like Sumday really simplified and streamlined the best parts of Sophtware Slump. Its a great little album, but I feel like it misses some of the unexpectedness of the previous.

^^ i more or less agree with this. I never heard Fambly and I'm having a hard time rememembering anything off Freeway besides that song that sounds like Weezer blue album era. but yeah, Sophtware and Sumday are both pretty great

feed them to the (Linden Ave) lions (will), Tuesday, 10 November 2009 18:12 (fourteen years ago) link

i am not 100% sure but i think my fave of theirs was the broken down comforter collection which comprises two early eps. melodious psychedelic rock wonderland. most of the other stuff i have heard by them including [/i]the sophtware slump[/i] was too soft, too effete for my likes iirc.

alex in mainhattan, Tuesday, 10 November 2009 18:57 (fourteen years ago) link

I also thought Sumday was a disappointment compared with Grandaddy's previous work. Just too bland for me. I stopped listening to them around then.

Duke, Tuesday, 10 November 2009 19:45 (fourteen years ago) link

yes yes that is what everyone initially thinks until they unaccountably give it a 5th chance, then it blossoms

joekin' phoenix (country matters), Tuesday, 10 November 2009 19:52 (fourteen years ago) link

I like Grandaddy/Lytle quite a bit, but for me his stuff since "Sophtware" has been weighted down by too many samey-sounding piano ballads.

tylerw, Tuesday, 10 November 2009 19:54 (fourteen years ago) link

Their drummer is one of rock's dullest.

Duke, Tuesday, 10 November 2009 20:26 (fourteen years ago) link

yeah, they are a rhythmically uninteresting band -- don't think it's the drummer's fault though. He had to play along to Lytle's drum machine demos, I believe. They were more exciting live.

tylerw, Tuesday, 10 November 2009 20:28 (fourteen years ago) link

they were huge live

cutty, Tuesday, 10 November 2009 20:42 (fourteen years ago) link

I loved this band and saw them live a number of times, which is where they cut it best.

A tiny club in Sheffield had them sharing the postage stamp sized stage with a self-planted forest. The last time was at the Leeds Festival about five years ago just before they split. Lytle was angry about the real punk rock emanating from the main stage in between his songs. From memory it was Sum 41 .

I thought their drummer at least looked great. Swigging from a 1.5 litre bottle of wine as he nailed his relentless 4/4.That takes something

But, to me, they HAD lost something by Sumday and blew the whole lot with Fambly Cat. Too samey

Nothing wrong with that.

Jason clearly has one thing and he's gonna keep doing that thing forever.

sumday's weakest two tracks are the first two

Insane! "I'm On Standby" is one of their best! I actually feel legit sadness for the robot in this song. The second "I'll be down for some time" is just crushing for some reason

that is a stupid opinion yes and it must be hoped that whoever expressed it seven years ago has now recanted

Not really getting a lot out of this new album. It sounds as forgettable as his solo albums.

Kitchen Person, Monday, 30 January 2017 14:41 (seven years ago) link

Thread made me pull out Sumday for the first time in years. Still love it. I'd forgotten how much acoustic guitar is on this album!

Will probably eventually check out the new one despite the lukewarm response here

Wimmels, Tuesday, 31 January 2017 17:30 (seven years ago) link

At the time Sophtware felt like The Classic One, and Sumday felt like a bunch of pretty good tunes that all sounded the same. But I'll happily listen to Sumday and the TSS feels like way too much effort to me now.

The two robot Jed songs on TSS still slay me, especially the poem song. Prefer Sumday to TSS, though.

ciderpress, Thursday, 2 February 2017 01:21 (seven years ago) link

Can't stand the Jed songs, personally. They really make Sophtware Slump a slog for me. The Jed song on the new one is mercifully short, at least.

It's not their strongest album but the highs (the preview tracks + This Is The Part) are delightful. Turns out A Lost Machine is kind of amazing

an uptempo Pop/Hip Hop mentality (imago), Friday, 3 March 2017 22:02 (seven years ago) link

I like the first tracks very much. They remind me of the first time I heard grandaddy and excitedly played Sophtware/Sumday all night through headphones on an iRiver mp3 player. 'A Lost Machine' is not working for me yet.

Sufjan Grafton, Friday, 3 March 2017 22:26 (seven years ago) link

Oh yeah the first three are great. Whole album growing with each listen

an uptempo Pop/Hip Hop mentality (imago), Friday, 3 March 2017 22:32 (seven years ago) link

Maybe Evermore is the standout?

an uptempo Pop/Hip Hop mentality (imago), Friday, 3 March 2017 22:32 (seven years ago) link

was definitely the immediate standout for me. I am open to others growing on me, though, as that's usually how this works.

Sufjan Grafton, Friday, 3 March 2017 22:35 (seven years ago) link

Eight now my thinking is it doesn't need the two tracks with long titles, everything else is golden

an uptempo Pop/Hip Hop mentality (imago), Friday, 3 March 2017 22:41 (seven years ago) link

Not a single standout on this great great album for me. Such an amazing hangover of an album. After the sophtware died, and they tried and failed to sober up, and this is what happened. It's like getting a blue screen after a hard reset. Head aching and hung over on the porch, in the scorching sun. Passed out in a Datsun. I will defend this album to the teeth.

new one is pretty good! "Evermore" is instantly one of their best songs

ciderpress, Saturday, 4 March 2017 18:11 (seven years ago) link

akm, Saturday, 4 March 2017 18:33 (seven years ago) link

"you grieve like a freeway tree" is a pretty great line

calstars, Saturday, 4 March 2017 21:21 (seven years ago) link

an uptempo Pop/Hip Hop mentality (imago), Saturday, 4 March 2017 21:36 (seven years ago) link

Sumday was the first Grandaddy album I disliked. Just listened again and don't get it. The Sophtware Slump was their high point for me.

Duke, Sunday, 5 March 2017 21:11 (seven years ago) link

New album is mediocre at best. 'Evermore' a sordid attempt at grasping at past heights. Saying it's Deserter's Songs II and much, much better than that is just challops.

Le Bateau Ivre, Sunday, 5 March 2017 23:12 (seven years ago) link

when have they ever used such krautrock keyboards before??

an uptempo Pop/Hip Hop mentality (imago), Sunday, 5 March 2017 23:14 (seven years ago) link

anyway, all of their albums are growers

an uptempo Pop/Hip Hop mentality (imago), Sunday, 5 March 2017 23:15 (seven years ago) link

It's totally depressing somehow

calstars, Sunday, 5 March 2017 23:15 (seven years ago) link

I guess that's the charm

calstars, Sunday, 5 March 2017 23:15 (seven years ago) link

Yeah, I am not getting the hype for the new album at all. I can't find one memorable song on there. Sumday is enjoyable, but was a massive step down after Under The Western Freeway and The Sophtware Slump.

kitchen person, Sunday, 5 March 2017 23:26 (seven years ago) link
