Because most of the band's fan base would not forgive them for it.
I love The 1975 but I recognise they're the kind of group that would attract a lot of bullshit idiot fans who basically agree with the NME's worldview even if they don't read it.

This band suck colossal donkey dick.
― Toni Braxton-Hicks (Turrican), Wednesday, 2 April 2014 21:54 (ten years ago) link
i don't think the NME even reviewed the album and iirc they were nominated for "worst band" at their awards along with 1D and The Wanted.

I know! And I suspect the band and their management are sensitive to this issue and don't want to stoke the flames of "fake rock sellout" resentment.
Of course I have enjoyed songs from 1D and The Wanted in the last few years more than any other British "rock" band except The 1975.
― Tim F, Thursday, 3 April 2014 00:42 (ten years ago) link
That's a weird read on it, since most 1975 fans I've encountered seem to be young women. Not that there can't be overlap there but I imagine there's more overlap between their fanbase and a group like 1D's fanbase than people might realize or at least acknowledge.
On that note, Healy said that 1D asked them to write a song for them recently.
― Greer, Thursday, 3 April 2014 05:30 (ten years ago) link
I feel like it would be kind of weird for a 1975 fan to consider it unforgivable for them to open for Taylor Swift, because like Greer I'd say that, despite their status as a serious, non-manufactured band, a lot of their fans as far as I'm aware are genuine *pop* fans, the sort of people likely to at least appreciate Taylor Swift and 1D. NME readers who salivate over stuff like Wolf Alice, Peace and Drenge are probably more likely to be repulsed by the 1975. But this is all just my own conjecture.
In any event, they are a big enough band in their own right to headline a UK tour. Interesting comparison with them and Charli XCX opening for Paramore on their UK dates; despite "I Love It", she is still very much a fringe pop act in the UK and it made more sense for her to profile-build as a supporting artist rather than go on a small-scale tour of her homeland.

"Wolf Alice, Peace and Drenge"
lol who are these bands
― Herbie Handcock (Murgatroid), Thursday, 3 April 2014 06:20 (ten years ago) link
Yes, NME have decided the 1975 aren't for them – they weren't just nominated for Worst Band, they won it.
And, in the UK at least, they are too big for any support slots outside a stadium. Last tour finished with three sold-out nights at Brixton (15,000 tickets sold). They will be playing 10,000 capacity rooms before this year is out, I believe.
But it's true their UK fanbase is young women – they're very much a pop act over here.

Febrile atmosphere at the Royal Albert Hall this evening. Matt Healy did a sweet thing. Took phone from a girl in the crowd, and went round the stage filming and taking selfies of him with the rest of the band before handing it back. She collapsed, obviously.

Note to Tim F: they're on the splendour lineup, which could mean a melbourne sideshow in late July / early August.

ATTN Tim F: The 1975 playing at the Hi-Fi on Monday July 28.
Also an all ages show at the Hi-Fi on the Sunday beforehand at 1pm, which I think I'll avoid.

nooooooooooooooooooo i think their show is sold out :(
― ginuwine's cousin (monotony), Thursday, 8 May 2014 23:44 (ten years ago) link
This album keeps invading my brain more and more over time. One of the best albums I've heard in the past couple years
Yeah I also won't get to see them in DC or Baltimore because the shows sold out by the time I got into the album. :( I blame their name - I saw this thread title last year but figured they were like Wolfmother or something. Also a fan of the Bad Suns who they're touring with, so I'm doubly bummed.

LIVE. SO GOOD.
Especially "Fallingforyou" and "Me" and "You" and "Menswear" and "Sex".

i also saw them at boston calling and they were really great idk

i remember when the sex ep came out and i kinda discounted the non-"sex" tracks as mostly strange, subdued, ambient things and now they're some of my favorite music of the past few years
― emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Tuesday, 9 September 2014 21:11 (nine years ago) link
Agreed. Still think the album would be improved by having more of that vibe (they could probably afford to lose, IDK, "She Way Out" to make space for it).
I was pleased when Matt said that "fallingforyou" was his favourite of their songs.

two phone everything
Oh yeah I really like the song (esp. "I've got a feeling that marijuana's rotting your brain" becoming "I've got a feeling that my friends are gonna kick in your brain") but coming after "Talk", "Heart Out", "Settle Down" and "Girls" it feels a bit like a superfluous and less distinct amalgam of all four.
Agreed that it worked very well live. When I saw the them the weakest song was "Settle Down", surprisingly.

fallingdownthisrabbitholeagain i discovered i somehow missed the totally credible disclosurey remix by the drummer on the 2nd sex ep! awesome
for real waiting with bated breath for what these guys do next (and i don't often feel that way even for fave artists)
