Jazz GUITAR poll

One of the few jazz guitarists I'd put up there with pretty much any musician. Kind of wish he appeared as a sideman on a wider variety of records -- would have liked to have heard him play with more different people.

I think it's more ignorance than challops tbf. A lot of ilmers come to jazz from a punk background, so they gravitate toward the freer players. Similarly, Grant Green gets 3x Wes because he plays the heavy funk, even though he's a far inferior player.

I like Grant Green more than you do but agree with your basic argument.

i dunno, this poll is a little silly to begin with -- like, we wouldn't just do a rock guitar poll would we? have people voting either thurston moore or scotty moore?

I like Grant Green ok -- he has a great sound and feel, his solos just never go anywhere and he's really limited harmonically.

Most polls are silly. This poll in particular is only silly because based on the voter turnout people probably haven't heard or let alone listened to many of these guys, personal taste or not.

Interesting about the double-edged sword of the Griffin gig. Had to play to plate-spinners, but also Ellington and Basie.

When she asked him why he took the gig after being on the road so long, I kind of thought "Duh, you answered your own question." Anyway, he seemed like a really nice and cool guy. I found the stuff he said about his physical limitations on the guitar comforting, because I always felt the same way about my own playing -- slow, stiff hands that only get so limber even with a lot of practice.

lol I just put on his Jazzpar Quartet record, not knowing that much about it except that it was some Danish thing relating to a prize he won, and I was like "Damn, rando Danish sax player is BURNING these changes. Euro-nobodies are smoking americans these days in jazz." Then I looked it up and realized it was Chris Potter.

Today would have been the 92 birthday of Jimmy Wyble, who I believed I've mentioned here before, who passed away four years ago shortly before his eighty-eighth birthday. He started out in Western Swing, playing with both Bob Wills and Spade Cooley, among others- listen to his solo on the original version of "Roly Poly"- and later played jazz with the likes of Red Norvo, Benny Goodman and Frank Sinatra- look for him in Ocean's Eleven and The Screaming Mimi. Later on he did tons of film and TV work, playing on the soundtrack of The Wild Bunch and The Flip Wilson Show among many others. Later still he was known as a teacher to many, many guitarists and for developing a contrapuntal approach for playing guitar. I was lucky enough to meet him once the before he died. The kind, gentle demeanor and devotion to maximizing musical matters and minimizing the attendant trappings that inspired so many were completely in evidence, you could feel it, even when he was just sitting at a table.
