Year-End Critics' Polls 2013

Hm, I really liked the first MS record and sorted of faded back from the ones that followed. I liked her later live performances less, certainly. But I haven't heard this one at all.

I don't think her early LPs were as severe as they were often described, at least not once you adjusted to some of her tones. This Is It And I Am It was just awesome anthem after awesome anthem. But her self-titled LP is the one where she really opened up as a songwriter; that album just crushes me.

Chronicles of Marnia is sorta the easy-listening Marnie Stern album I didn't know I wanted but am glad to have

have you guys heard the Wire album? The best of their post-2008 run.

GvsB typically sidesteps the indie blog trap by digging at least half a layer deeper than most of his colleagues.

Jai Paul! that's another name that, back in June, you would've confidently assumed would be on most of these lists. although obviously the record being an unsanctioned and disavowed leak could've hurt its reach in the long run, but at the time that just seemed to intensify the critical praise.

nah they just said that he didn't intentionally leak the album himself -- they were his demos tho

"jasmine" is amazing, otherwise i don't get why people care about that guy at all

the evolution of gvb's taste is pretty hilarious + corny

pure bathing culture was quite nice live, lots of layered harmonies, but i have yet to check out their record.

i was all over idib dude's last album and invested a lot of time and energy listening to it and thinking about the lyrics and the music. but then i was convinced that it just had pretensions to seriousness and was weirdly grossly hollow, despite the music, and i couldn't bear to listen to it anymore.

so after dark 2 was a casualty of that i guess.

I don't love the KQ album, but I'm def more excited about that side of Dessner.

Hadn't listened to Marnie Stern in many months and am enjoying revisiting it. I still like the Palma Violets album, and the Mosquito seems to be underrated. Sure it's not as good as It's Blitz, but it beats the hell out of a lot of other boring indie crap I see on most these lists. Nice to see Merchandise's Totale Nite EP on NME list too.

I wasn't a fan of the first Arctic Monkeys album, but liked all their albums after. This piece actually got me finally appreciating some of the songs on the debut more - http://www.popmatters.com/post/175769-the-top-ten-arctic-monkeys-songs/. It also shows they had really strong songs on each their albums, though I do think the latest is best.

IDIB are sort of like Revolutionary War reenactors or something where their whole goal is to completely nail this aesthetic of a very specific slice of an era
