But srsly, if you want to go after her on the lyrical front, you could find easier targets than "Malibu."

i think YOU missed the point of my last post, but never no mind

i don't really care one way or the other about CL (esp. in 2006), i just always found that lyric lazy/throw away (but maybe that's what people like about it)

Courtney plugging new book on THE VIEW yesterday:

If someone can find the Good Morning America thing, post it.

i listened to 'malibu' yesterday, it really is astonishingly great. i don't understand what's wrong with that lyric either, it doesn't seem lazy or throwaway.

i heard it for ages as "baby drive away from malibu" in the first chorus, and thereafter "baby drive away to malibu".

TS: another Courtney Love "comeback record" vs. another Jay-Z "comeback record"

I want to bump the Celebrity Skin thread to talk about how great that record is, but the search function doesn't work :(

Do you mean this one?

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Thursday, 2 November 2006 11:20 (seventeen years ago) link

I will, because the last one was unbelievably great.

Raymond Cummings (Raymond Cummings), Thursday, 2 November 2006 12:49 (seventeen years ago) link

maybe Corgan will end up w/ her after all.
eeesh. they're sorta made for each other in sick way.
he can write/produce her songs, she'll do the PR that he can't.
Yemchuck (or how ever it's spelled) will do the photo spread.

edde (edde), Thursday, 2 November 2006 13:13 (seventeen years ago) link

Yeah, she says that she and Corgan are living together now, so it seems reasonable to expect another Celebrity Skin. I think she was more suited to using Cobain's stuff, but I love Corgan so whatevs!

richardk (Richard K), Thursday, 2 November 2006 16:38 (seventeen years ago) link

I liked Malibu a lot, but the rest of that record....eh. (and i LIKE Fleetword Mac!)

Raymond Cummings (Raymond Cummings), Thursday, 2 November 2006 16:49 (seventeen years ago) link

I've long hoped she'll duet with Corgan on "Whenever I Call You 'Friend'."

Courtney and S. Malkmus did compete to see who could finish the NYT crossword first during the Lollapalooza '95 tour.

Courtney can spell?

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 2 November 2006 21:23 (seventeen years ago) link

Malkmus kicked her ass in the puzzle contest. It was the Sunday version i.e. the one I can never ever solve.

Sunday's big, but it ain't so bad. Saturday crushes brains.

hearditonthexico (rogermexico), Thursday, 2 November 2006 23:03 (seventeen years ago) link

Courtney on Leno last night was the most lucid I'd ever seen her. She actually seems happy. I hope it lasts.

She has some stories, man:
CL: When I was 14 I was exotic dancing!
Leno: Who the hell hires a 14 year old exotic dancer?
CL: The Yakuza.

court rules. sorry I missed this! is it on teh youtubes somewhere?

dar1a g (daria g), Wednesday, 8 November 2006 22:11 (seventeen years ago) link

I don't see it up yet.
Let's see, I'll recap a bit. It was two whole segements long. Another funny part was that the nude pic of her laying on her stomach on the cover of her book Dirty Blonde was taken by Kurt, and when she was looking through his photos she found a pic of Tracy Marander in the same exact pose! "So he was definitely an ass man."
She also talked more about being friends with Whitney Houston, and how Whitney said Courtney's "more ghetto than her" cuz she's done shit that even Whitney wouldn't stoop to.
Oh, and there was a story about the time Mel Gibson(!) distracted her drug dealer so she could be taken off to rehab.

Marmot (marmotwolof), Wednesday, 8 November 2006 22:49 (seventeen years ago) link

And her associates/hangers on/drug dealers bleed her for 20 million dollars.

The Dusty Baker Selection (Charles McCain), Wednesday, 8 November 2006 23:01 (seventeen years ago) link

Yeah! That's fucked up. She had like 100 banks accounts and couldn't keep track of all the mooching.

mono was one of those songs that gave birth to a movement, but nobody noticed, except oddly enough courtney...

the video was one of the few prophetic moments in pop, like dylan at newport, hendrix at woodstock, madonna voguing, britney in the kilt iconic, but stranger and more fecund.

pinkmoose (jacklove), Thursday, 9 November 2006 09:07 (seventeen years ago) link

06. Pacific Coast Highway

Is that a Sonic Youth cover by any chance?

Just got the Dirty Blonde book in the mail today. It's like the Kurt Cobain Journals but with lots of photos. Looks trashy and fun. Will report back.

There's a postcard to me in that book! I found it a bit exhausting, honestly. And pricy!

Arthurgh! A Music War (Arthur), Thursday, 4 January 2007 04:11 (seventeen years ago) link

Amazon had it $15 off. Which postcard?
I've just glanced through it a bit. Courtney's handwriting is for the most part a lot less readable than Kurt's.

Yeah, jbr, it has my old address on Norfolk Street. Marmot, it's the postcard where she complains about how dull Norway is--or maybe Denmark. I'm glad she never sent it, she sounded so jaded.

three weeks pass...
Latest info on the new album has it coming out in March, supposedly NOT going to be called "How Dirty Girls Get Clean" anymore even though that title is proudly displayed on the Dirty Blonde dust jacket, hmm...
Some mp3s floating around, I've only listened to a demo of "Never Go Hungry Again" so far, which has a big catchy folk-rock chorus.

Some new pics of teh court:

Nobody's Daughter is the title now.

http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,289177,00.html

She played the songs from “Nobody’s Daughter” with her band in a most sophisticated fashion. She still rocks, and can get off a raspy yelp when she needs it. But now she has talented musicians backing her up, and arrangements. The music is defined, hummable and well-constructed.

So are the lyrics. Whenever “Nobody’s Daughter” is released (this is still up in the air — hello labels looking for a hit) old fans and new fans should be impressed by Courtney’s ability to articulate her pain, anger and rebirth.

The eatery is called Hiro, and it’s synonymous with the way Courtney Love is feeling these days. She didn’t die. She became a hero.

WOW...

Pacific Coast Highway still gets stuck in my head sometimes and I've only heard a short clip. Closest to something like "Malibu," if you haven't heard it.

marmotwolof, Monday, 23 July 2007 20:56 (sixteen years ago) link

In “PCH,” Courtney sings — maybe to her dead husband Kurt Cobain, who committed suicide by shooting himself in the mouth —- “I’m up on Pacific Coast Highway/With your gun in my hand.”

*barf* still pimpin that corpse eh

Shakey Mo Collier, Monday, 23 July 2007 20:59 (sixteen years ago) link

You'd rather she become Mary Poppins?

But more pressingly:
"Should opera legend and ultimate New Yorker Beverly Sills’ memorial service be full of music or speeches? Should it be produced by the Metropolitan Opera, her manager or best friend Barbara Walters? And was Walters even her best friend?"

Martin Van Burne, Monday, 23 July 2007 21:03 (sixteen years ago) link

I think I'd rather she retire and raise her kid and stop clamoring for attention from the rest of us like some sort of needy-attention-whore-robot
