I'm not sure what exactly, but something tells me that this Devendra song is about a pedeophile. It's hard to tell though because of the subtlety involved, but I have a suspicion.

showers be ambiguous!

its definitely, obviously, no doubt about it.. about pedophelia, for sure. not that you'll take my word, but i'm not sure what else he has to say? its pretty blatant, so mabye we want to make it more complicated to hopefully..obscure the meaning? p.s. -gay marriage comment had me laughing.

Perhaps more to the point, this song is rather boring.

Spoke too soon, this is growing on me.

it could be that scott is closer than it seems with the "little girl" bit.

plain swapping boy for girl and then not really changing things otherwise may be simple gender based word play. its interesting to wonder who'd be paying attention at all if he'd used the well worn "little girl" phrase.

Nancy Sinatra swaps in boy in her version of "Run for Your Life" and noone's after her for it. of course, in that case we have yr standard heterosexual heirarchy in place. That make's this whole discussion seem to be overly concerned with sex side of it. If joanna newsome, say wrote this would there be such a discussion.

given devendras perfomrmances as abra and obvious lack of concern for gender rules and his stated interest in writing songs that exist more like old standards or folk songs, i think too much reading into his motives here is easily too much

from what I've heard of this album sampler and "Little Boys," I quite enjoy the direction Devendra Banhart has taken. Some of these songs sound have a live, spontaneous feeling, and it works. I did enjoy Nino and RITH, and seeing him live was great, too. He put on quite a show.

Gary Puckett clearly has control issues, if you've listened to his oeuvre. Lou Christie is more into hystrionics.

Might just be an absurdist thing. What if he substituted the word "frogs" or "serpents" for "boys" . Total psyche move.

i listened to "michigan state" last night and it made me really sad.

ach, i think i'm wrong. after listening to the delivery being so 60's ish etc, it does sounds sorta like a "little girl" thing. but he's also trying hard to sound creepy, so...it seems fairly ambiguous. and i think this is somewhat of a tiny tim rip-off. and was also just bored with it in general.

Here you go, Devendra. Just swap "Irene" with "Ian":

I asked your mother for you
She told me that you was too young
I wish to the Lord I’d never seen your face
or heard your lying tongue
Irene goodnight, Irene goodnight
Goodnight Irene, Goodnight Irene
