New album Lady's Bridge may even have achieved the impossible and out-gorgeoused Coles corner!

Richard Hawley is a god.

oh i mean it. totally.
― CharlieNo4, Tuesday, 17 July 2007 19:25 (eighteen years ago)
Anyone else heard Lady's Bridge yet? Not out here yet, but I have been bingeing on Cole's Corner + Lowedges for the past month or so.
― fritz, Thursday, 6 September 2007 18:38 (eighteen years ago)
I haven't heard good things about it, but haven't heard it myself. It'll be tough to top Cole's Corner, though.
― kornrulez6969, Thursday, 6 September 2007 19:15 (eighteen years ago)
seriously, that one's just about perfect for people who like that kind of thing
― fritz, Thursday, 6 September 2007 19:27 (eighteen years ago)
At least one of the songs on Lady's Bridge sounds exactly like one of the songs he contributed to on A Girl Called Eddy.
― James Redd and the Blecchs, Monday, 7 January 2008 02:59 (eighteen years ago)
New one out next month. Truelove's Gutter. Lady's Bridge never really hit me like Cole's Corner.
― Brio, Tuesday, 25 August 2009 18:36 (sixteen years ago)
Lady's Bridge never really hit me like Cole's Corner.
Yeah. OTOH, almost nothing this decade hit me like Cole's Corner.
― Daniel, Esq., Tuesday, 25 August 2009 18:41 (sixteen years ago)
It really is something else, isn't it? Hard to define exactly what's so special about that record, for me anyway.
― Brio, Tuesday, 25 August 2009 18:45 (sixteen years ago)
Anyone heard Truelove's Gutter?
I'm checking it out on Lala. Only one playthrough, so it's hard to form opinions. My first impression is that it stretches his music out a little, but the songs aren't as sharp as those on Cole's Corner (that's hardly a damning criticism, tho). Anyway, digging it.
― Daniel, Esq., Saturday, 17 October 2009 02:26 (sixteen years ago)
Like the last one it's falling short of Cole's Corner for me - but I gotta give it some time I think. I'd like to hear Richard Hawley and Greg Cartwright make a record.
― Brio, Thursday, 29 October 2009 15:21 (sixteen years ago)
late to the party on this guy evidently but am totally loving Truelove's Gutter - must get rest of output
― larry craig memorial gloryhole (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 5 January 2010 23:27 (sixteen years ago)
can't stop listening to this dude - got Lady's Bridge and Cole's Corner and was kinda surprised at the more sprightly country numbers. the new one's more of a langorous, lugubrious affair but I love that its all stretched out, kinda reminiscent of Dion's "Born to Be With You"
― The Tommy Westphall Universe Hypothesis (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 29 January 2010 19:08 (sixteen years ago)
classic classic classic

i'm finished with this response brief, strung-out, waiting for my wife and daughter to return from disney tonight. and this new album -- truelove's gutter -- is so moving to me right now.

Richard Hawley can do no wrong. I will always treasure Cole's Corner.
― musicfanatic, Monday, 24 May 2010 02:29 (sixteen years ago)
Yeah, I just finally got around to picking up Truelove's Gutter and it is stunning.

i'd been frantically searching around lala for stuff to download before the big shutdown this week, and the two richard hawley albums i don't own are near the top of my list.
― Daniel, Esq., Monday, 24 May 2010 03:01 (sixteen years ago)
His version of Some Candy Talking is wonderful too
― bham, Monday, 24 May 2010 08:00 (sixteen years ago)
got the False Lights from the Land EP (Remorse Code + 3 new tracks) - very nice, all doomed-sailor-themed stuff

This Lady's Bridge album's pretty nice.
― Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 16 February 2011 04:14 (fifteen years ago)
Yeah; I can listen to Tonight The Streets Are Ours on repeat for hours.
The next disc (Truelove's Gutter) got some nice reviews, but I haven't been able to get into it.
― Daniel, Esq., Wednesday, 16 February 2011 11:48 (fifteen years ago)
eh, i see upthread that i got into it for at least one day/night; that momentary connection with an album will sometimes happen when i'm ''strung out'' from work.
― Daniel, Esq., Wednesday, 16 February 2011 11:53 (fifteen years ago)
lol Ned Lady's Bridge is probably his weakest album!
it is still great tho
― I, Mr. Sneer Joy (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 16 February 2011 16:26 (fifteen years ago)
Good, then everything will be even better.
― Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 16 February 2011 16:28 (fifteen years ago)
I concur. I haven't listened to Truelove's Gutter in a while. Need to check that one out. I remember really liking the first track and 'Remorse Code.'
All the talk upthread about Cole's Corner is otm. An amazing album.

Yeah, of the three albums I have Lady's Bridge is definitely my least favorite. Its a complete toss-up as to whether I love Truelove's Gutter or Cole's Corner more - pretty much depends on my mood. Both are fantastic though.

Somehow I never heard of this guy until recently. Late Night Final is pretty great. Trying to decide which one to get next.

Cole's Corner

Definitely 'Cole's Corner'.
― publier les (suggest) bans de (Michael White), Tuesday, 9 August 2011 20:04 (fourteen years ago)
He's really great autumn music, isn't he? Truelove's Gutter has been my soundtrack for the last few days. Really reminds of No Other by Gene Clark with the sprawling arrangements

Any news about his next release? His impossible to read website says he's in the studio working on it (as of Sept. 5th.)
Now I have to listen to Truelove's Gutter and No Other (my favorite album) back-to-back. What torture.

― You big bully, why are you hitting that little bully? (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 28 March 2012 22:23 (fourteen years ago)
Apparently it's supposed to be stripped down and 'psychedelic'. I love the guy so respect whatever he wants to do, but am a little wary of what it's gonna be...
― I'm not going leftfield on you... (hypehat), Wednesday, 28 March 2012 22:28 (fourteen years ago)
I loved Cole's Corner. What else is good by him?
― kornrulez6969, Wednesday, 28 March 2012 23:21 (fourteen years ago)
all of it
― You big bully, why are you hitting that little bully? (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 28 March 2012 23:25 (fourteen years ago)
Late Night Final - almost as good as Cole's CornerLowedges - warm-up act for Cole's Corner, also great. maybe loses some focus in the second half.Lady's Bridge - follow-up to Cole's Corner, has a few country-ish momentsTrue Love's Gutter - songs get longer, more epic/langorous arrangements
― You big bully, why are you hitting that little bully? (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 28 March 2012 23:28 (fourteen years ago)
Very cool. Thanks
― kornrulez6969, Wednesday, 28 March 2012 23:39 (fourteen years ago)
Kinda disappointed (but not really) he didn't go with the naming convention of previous albums and just called it "Sky's Edge."
Looking forward to this. I thought Lady's Bridge was weak but True Love's Gutter is pretty amazing.
― righteousmaelstrom, Thursday, 29 March 2012 14:53 (fourteen years ago)
Cole's Corner is so much better than the others
― L'ennui, cette maladie de tous les (Michael White), Thursday, 29 March 2012 15:04 (fourteen years ago)
I'd say "Late Night Final" is right there with it.

As the world goes to shit and the brumal dark presses against the windows, I am glad to be delivered of Hawley's lowlight bendections. Fucking hell, Coles Corner is good innit?
― I would prefer not to. (Chinaski), Friday, 24 October 2025 21:01 (seven months ago)
I would 100% take an album of explorations like 'Last Orders'. Shit's like Loren Connors.
― I would prefer not to. (Chinaski), Friday, 24 October 2025 21:18 (seven months ago)
Did anyone see ‘Standing at the Sky’s Edge’? Saw it last year at the Gillian Lynne theatre and was in pieces at the end.
― Dan Worsley, Saturday, 25 October 2025 10:23 (seven months ago)
Is that a jukebox musical of his stuff?
― Nicholas Raybeat (James Redd and the Blecchs), Saturday, 25 October 2025 17:54 (seven months ago)
Well, not really. There’s a few existing songs but bulk are new and are set to serve the narrative not the other way around.
― Dan Worsley, Saturday, 25 October 2025 18:11 (seven months ago)
cole's corner is still one of my favorite records of the century.
