I have a feeling she means radical like "an amazing new concept". Kate is such a pioneer.

I know, right?, Friday, 27 July 2007 17:51 (sixteen years ago) link

She really is. She pioneered anorexia, then she pioneered druglove, and now big girls.

que u mite b rite

The beard at Otto's table said, -- Is that Hemingway? Ed Feasley looked over at the Big Unshaven Man, who had just said, -- No queer in history ever produced great art. Feasley looked vague, but said -- There's something familiar about him...

-- I tell you, there's a queer conspiracy to dominate everything. Just look around, the boy with the red hunting cap said. -- Queers dominate writing, they dominate the theater, they dominate art. Just try to find a gallery where you can show your pictures if you're not a queer, he added, raising a cigarette between paint-encrusted fingers. -- What do you think women look so damned foolish for today? It's because queers design their clothes, queers dictate women's fashions, queers do their hair, queers do all the photography in the fashion magazines. They're purposely making women look more and more idiotic until nobody will want to go to bed with one. It's a conspiracy.

Beth Ditto, take comfort in the fact that I will never compliment your face.

Curt1s Stephens, Friday, 27 July 2007 17:55 (sixteen years ago) link

that was published in 1955. so much for fashion forward.

hstencil, Friday, 27 July 2007 17:55 (sixteen years ago) link

haha

Surmounter, Friday, 27 July 2007 17:56 (sixteen years ago) link

yeah what's weird is I read that section this morning???? so it was fresh in my mind

Mr. Que, Friday, 27 July 2007 18:02 (sixteen years ago) link

thanks for pointing it out, it's been some years since i read it so it was nice to crack it open just now. that book is a beautiful compendium of every stupid thing ever said in new york, from then until the end of time (since people keep saying stupid things). it's so good.

hstencil, Friday, 27 July 2007 18:04 (sixteen years ago) link

yeah it sure is, maybe i'll finish it this time!

Mr. Que, Friday, 27 July 2007 18:06 (sixteen years ago) link

i can't tell if she uses 'radical' to mean 'totally awesome and gnarly' or 'scarily extremist and revolting'. she's wrong either way.

Beth confirms she's like, radical but not toooo radical:

"I would never lose weight. I would never wear anything I didn’t want to wear, and that’s a really radical statement as a woman in the mainstream music industry. In a way, I almost think girls and women need a voice, and I think Gossip is a pretty cool voice. It’s not as radical as Bikini Kill was in the ‘90s, or riot grrrl was in the ‘90s—that really aggressive, super-macho hardcore punk scene had never seen anything like that before. It’s not as radical as that, but you’re not preaching to the choir anymore when you’re selling records in Barnes and Noble."

hstencil, Friday, 27 July 2007 18:37 (sixteen years ago) link

hah

Surmounter, Friday, 27 July 2007 18:37 (sixteen years ago) link

you can buy music at B&N but I have never seen vinyl there.

Steven Wells wrote a good article about the politics of pie-eating:

"This could be the start of a revolution. Maybe Dove and Slim-Fast and Heat, by hitching their flimsy fashion wagons to the stout carthorse of anti-anorexia, have inadvertently started an unstoppable wave of gorgeous gigantism. Maybe football fans will start chanting, "Who ate all the tape-worms?" Maybe six months from now, formerly skeletal Kensington grand dames will have their personal trainers force foie gras down their throats with tubes and plungers, in the meantime hiring thin women as social companions, so they'll look fatter by comparison in the photos in Harpers and Vogue.

Or could it be just a flash in the chip pan? When interviewers congratulated John Goodman for his smooth dancing moves in the movie King Ralph, he snarled back "Yeah, for a fat guy, right?" Because that could be all we're doing. Stopping in the street and tossing 50p pieces in the hat of the dancing fattie. Not because he's a particularly good dancer, but because he's so damn fat. And when the XXL radical-chic freak show's over, we'll go back to recruiting hordes of hungry boy-women and angsting about the size of our arses.

It could go either way. The world is agog. In the refugee camps of northern Sudan they talk of little else."

I would say dudes are progressing at the same rates as other men, so some of the old maxims don't necessarily apply to today's gay.

one month passes...

this actually happened, ppl.

Perez Hilton isn’t just a celebrity blogger. He’s a serious cultural force. Love him or hate him, at 7 million clicks a day, his infiltration into people’s daily lives is something most media outlets would die for. And more impressive is the fact that he does it all from a Wi-Fi connection in a West Hollywood coffee shop. Perez’s bread and butter might be the glossy celebs that get stripped bare on his sometimes scathing, occasionally sweet and always amusing site. But his championing of underdogs such as Beth Ditto stems from a true support for the underground and a kinship for “loud, obnoxious and openly gay” individuals, like the blogger himself.

his story about castro being "dead" made the cover of the wall street journal today. but so did a picture of the geico caveman sitcom.

Michael F Gill, Friday, 31 August 2007 20:15 (sixteen years ago) link

How is Beth Ditto an "underdog" when she's in music magazines all the time, has a weekly column in the guardian, plays all over the place with her band, is on the radio etc etc?

I keep seeing this name "perez hilton", who is this person? Srsly I have no idea!

Pashmina, Friday, 31 August 2007 20:42 (sixteen years ago) link

because she is a gross fat lesbian with annoying views

cutty, Friday, 31 August 2007 20:58 (sixteen years ago) link

Her guardian column is totally boring.

There's this thing called Google or Wikipedia.

stevienixed, Friday, 31 August 2007 21:07 (sixteen years ago) link

is beth ditto really a lesbian tho?

Jordan Sargent, Friday, 31 August 2007 21:20 (sixteen years ago) link

where does your doubt stem from

cutty, Friday, 31 August 2007 21:21 (sixteen years ago) link

I started typing some considered response up, but realised that i don't give much of a fuck about some shit singer in a drab crap band or less still some celebrity gossip blogger. Fuck that.

Pashmina, Friday, 31 August 2007 21:24 (sixteen years ago) link

i mean she probably is a lesbian but i wouldn't put it above someone her to pretend and/or "go along" w/ being a lesbian because it gets her on the cover of nme and urb or whatever.
same as i that doubt beth ditto is going on a diet anytime soon.
skinny straight chicks in band aren't in demand unless you look like jenny lewis.

Jordan Sargent, Friday, 31 August 2007 21:28 (sixteen years ago) link

someone

Jordan Sargent, Friday, 31 August 2007 21:28 (sixteen years ago) link

in rock bands*

Jordan Sargent, Friday, 31 August 2007 21:28 (sixteen years ago) link

your last comment is mindblowingly inaccurate

cutty, Friday, 31 August 2007 21:29 (sixteen years ago) link

i figured it might be a little o_O.

Jordan Sargent, Friday, 31 August 2007 21:32 (sixteen years ago) link

i have nothing against her as a person thought. not knocking the hustle as they say.

Jordan Sargent, Friday, 31 August 2007 21:32 (sixteen years ago) link

dude, Jenny Lewis ain't even pretty

sexyDancer, Friday, 31 August 2007 21:34 (sixteen years ago) link

i kind of agree w/ you re: jenny lewis, but that's def. not the consensus.

Jordan Sargent, Friday, 31 August 2007 21:36 (sixteen years ago) link

but the consensus is in fact skinny straight chicks in bands will always be in demand

cutty, Friday, 31 August 2007 21:42 (sixteen years ago) link

naw, they get fat too. you're better off with all dudes.

sexyDancer, Friday, 31 August 2007 21:44 (sixteen years ago) link

well of course. but mag. covers are more likely to go to fergie or gwen stefani or rihanna than the girl from paramore or something.

lol, first ou say "being a lesbian... gets her on the cover of nme and urb or whatever" then you cite three non-lesbians as being something "mag. covers are more likely to go to"

DOES. NOT. COMPUTE.

hstencil, Friday, 31 August 2007 21:58 (sixteen years ago) link

was in response to cutty saying skinny straight girls in rock bands are in demand (i think he misconstrued me cause i meant for the purposes of selling max amounts of cds and making the covers of magazines).

Jordan Sargent, Friday, 31 August 2007 22:04 (sixteen years ago) link

they should change the title to "new lesbian express."

hstencil, Friday, 31 August 2007 22:07 (sixteen years ago) link

hey maybe devendra banhart is a lesbian

Jordan Sargent, Friday, 31 August 2007 22:08 (sixteen years ago) link
