this is a REALLY tough decision

Green should be Gaye there, obviously.

(These days my go-to Jackson-related cut is "Hum Along And Dance")

I have always loved "shake your body" but the production is nowhere close to the near perfection of the tracks on "off the wall" and "thriller".
I'm not a big fan of "don't stop" but it sounds amazing !

Oh yeah, production on "Don't Stop" >>>>>> "Got To..." Gaye kinda simmers along (BPM experts could tell me the difference between the two) - it's a great groove, but it doesn't have the wow factor of the MJ.

This. "Shake Your Body" is great. "Don't Stop" is a masterpiece.

(And "Wanna Be Startin Somethin" may be better than either, if you wanna talk about MJ things that got unfairly overshadowed by other MJ things.)

Boven is het stil (Eric H.), Wednesday, 24 July 2013 16:01 (ten years ago) link

oh yeah, "wanna be startin" might be his greatest moment ever, not necessarily in terms of songwriting but just... the sound of the future (with Giorgio's voice) !

AlXTC from Paris, Wednesday, 24 July 2013 16:05 (ten years ago) link

The origins of "Wanna Be..." as documented in the Nelson George book on Thriller are awesome. Apparently the West African performer who came up with the chant got points on the song, so he's a very rich man, I hope.

first I think it's time I kick a little verse! (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 24 July 2013 16:12 (ten years ago) link

Manu Dibango, or did it come from someone else?

Byron E. Coli (Dan Peterson), Wednesday, 24 July 2013 16:14 (ten years ago) link

yeah, I think it was Dibango's soul makossa ?

that's not a slam dunk though. i love the earthy, effortless groove that simmers under "got to give it up". something slightly wounded (or at least fragile) about it, darker & dirtier than any mj i know. it's not a knockout, it's an embrace, gentle at that. depends what you want.

"Got to give" has a great groove but it's more laid back.
like a smooth before party with drinks with some friends.
"don't stop" is the moment the party goes full blast !

AlXTC from Paris, Wednesday, 24 July 2013 16:33 (ten years ago) link

I'm fine being in both places.

Boven is het stil (Eric H.), Wednesday, 24 July 2013 16:34 (ten years ago) link

My fave gaye track vs. A pretty good song from an artist I can't stand = no contest

the Spanish Porky's (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 24 July 2013 16:36 (ten years ago) link

actually, I much prefer the smooth before party drinks with some friends !

Actually, Manu Dibango sued MJ and they settled out of court. Then he more recently sued again when Rihanna sampled it; she got permission from MJ but not Manu: http://pitchfork.com/news/34538-manu-dibango-sues-rihanna-michael-jackson/

"don't stop" is my favorite mj song (out of many that i love by him). "got to give it up" is great but i gotta go with mj here.

feel like gtgiu is a fun gaye song, but only a modest sliver of what he could and did do, while dstyge is a dancefloor kaiju whatever your opinion of mj

The "Let's dance/ Let's Shout/ ....." chant in "Shake Your Body (Down to the Ground" is directly taken from "Got to Give It Up"

Marvin.

They are both sublime but I could very well never choose to hear DSTYGE again (but love it when i do hear it) while the Marvin is go-to track.

yeah, i might put shake on top, right before got to give it up. tough call tho.

IIIrd Datekeeper (contenderizer), Thursday, 25 July 2013 00:26 (ten years ago) link

Full version of Got To Give It Up is basically life, no? I mean, I know there are other songs but I don't know why they bother.

Popture, Thursday, 25 July 2013 01:00 (ten years ago) link

yeah, on 2nd, even "shake your body" has to fall
