I suppose these days he assumes the presence of a horn section guarantees a groove lithe enough to extend past the six-minute mark.

The horns are kinda my least favorite part. Although it does allow in a moment of o_0 when it sounds like he says, "And the whores say."

Reading these lyrics is so hilarious I kind of don't ever want to hear the actual song
Yeah, uh, feels good, don't it?Listen, uh
Yeah, this was your cityYou did it all and more, broke every law except for one, babeAttraction, are you readyI know you feel itPull you nearer ’til you feel it again, oh
I wanna do something rightBut we can do something betterAin’t no time like tonightAnd we ain’t trying to save it ’til laterStay out here living the lifeNobody cares who we are tomorrowYou got that lil’ something I likeA little something I’ve been wanting to borrowTonight the night’s, come on surrenderI won’t lead your love astray, astray, yeahYour love’s a weaponGive your body some directionThat’s my aimThen, we could
Take back the nightCome on, use me up until there’s nothing leftTake back the nightDizzy, spinning, sweating, you can’t catch your breathTake back the nightOoh, don’t know when the sun is rising nextTake back the nightSo if the feeling’s right, raise your glass and let’s
Take back the night, take back the nightThey gon’ try to shut us down, I’ll be damned if we gon’ let themTake back the night, take back the nightYou know you gon’ mess around and find out there ain’t no one betterTake back the night, ohYeah
Rare, there’s not too manyNo one but you and crowded rooms, we can do anything (yeah)Attraction can drive you crazyThe way you move, you go crazy, that’s incentive for me
Take back the night, take back the nightThey gon’ try to shut us down, I’ll be damned if we gon’ let themTake back the night, take back the nightYou know you gon’ mess around and find out there ain’t no one better[Middle 8]And the horns say, alrightAnd the horns say, alrightUh, ooh, and the horns say, alrightAnd the horns sayDoo doo doo doo doo doo dooTake it overYeah, yeah
Timbaland:Y’all ready to have a good time out there, ladies and gentlemen?Take back the night, take back the night...
Take back the nightCome on, use me up until there’s nothing leftTake back the nightDizzy, spinning, sweating, you can’t catch your breathTake back the nightOoh, don’t know when the sun is rising nextTake back the nightSo if the feeling’s right, raise your glass and let’sTake back the night

my absolute favorite part of his last album is the outro where he compares his dick specfically to a blueberry lollipop

and imagines the lollipop fucking a piece of bubblegum

that entire outro is incredibly sublime though
my point is that dude's lyrics have been fantastically dumb from the start

i think one can be aware of the fact that JT has always been a ridiculous goober and still note these lyrics are a cut above in the absurdly clueless appropriation dept

the funny thing about JT's dumb lyrics is that he IS capable of self-awareness - see his entire "shades" verse! which is 100% corny punchlines but he delivers them with a nod and a wink because he totally knows they're dumb - but the dumbest of them, the "you're not green"/"i work at my job"/"my dick is a blueberry lollipop" ones, he sings so SINCERELY and SERIOUSLY

he's the rare teen-bopper who's both kept his looks and (enough of the time) figured out how to make his boyishness work for him - less of the former, he'd be michael j fox, less of the latter he'd be JC Chasez

trying to think of BOP fodder folks who were both hot and likeable at thirtysomething - Mark Wahlberg & Ryan Gosling, but the former had to sacrifice his music career at the alter of shame and the latter just does it in his spare time.

Not entirely sure if that heavily airbrushed pic fully demonstrate JC's lack of sex appeal next to JT.

OK. I've heard "Take Back the Night" twice in the last two hours on local top 40 radio. I guess "Tunnel Vision" hasn't a chance...?

yeah it's possible that all along the plan was to save more marketable songs for the 2nd album since the 1st was destined to do big numbers anyway just off anticipation/name recognition. would be smart, considering how when big acts release 2 albums a few months apart usually it's the latter that has a hard time gaining traction.
― Picasso Birdman (some dude), Saturday, 13 July 2013 00:51 (ten years ago) link
i'm curious to see if part 2 follows the trend in that npr article or if it's coming out close enough to the huge overseller that the one after this (if there is one) will actually be the downslope of the curve

how is "tunnel vision" any less marketable than "what goes around" though. I mean I still hear the latter on radio, sometimes coda and all
although in retrospect the strategy here is p. clear: porn video for streaming hits, radio single for everything else
