How long would you wait before coming out of the Gin Blossoms closet?

I can't imagine anyone reacting that way. Most people are really excited to know anyone with any connection to celebrity.

I wouldn't immediately drop that I was the lead singer of any somewhat-famous band; just not a good way to make an intro IMO.

This is OTM. I'd let it come up naturally.

Treeship also makes a good suggestion, though.

That was an xpost to unregistered.

I mean, "I was in the Gin Blossoms" sounds like it would be easier for the average acquaintance to relate to and appreciate than e.g. "I'm a new music composer".

Gin Blossoms played at Disney Food and Wine recently.

they were actually well received, as far as those type of shows go

I still love that first album.

I want people I've recently met to like me because they enjoy my company, not because they like clinging to famous people. I'd be plenty proud of being the lead singer of the GBs, but telling people that right away would attract fame/attention whores, not people who genuinely liked me. I like the story of how Lily Allen enjoyed frequently hanging out with her dad's friend "Uncle Joe" when growing up, whom she regarded as her godfather. She had no idea he was Joe Strummer.

I would be like "Hey, check it out. Remember all those bitchin' Arizona rock songs from the mid-90s that still give you chills as you drive through the desert at night? Well, I just sang them. But the guy who wrote them killed himself. That's how good they were. Can you watch my dog for a week?"

"Hey Jealousy" is such a magnificent song.

Funny thread, this.

N/a. I'd say I was from Spacehog

I like the approach of saying you're in a different band, to open their mind to the possibility that you're in a band that was popular in the 90s, and then once they're comfortable with that, come totally clean about being in the Gin Blossoms.

had to bump thread just to point out that this is the most otm thing ever

Paul Ponzi, Monday, 15 July 2019 11:52 (four years ago) link

^^ yes, very otm.

also, "Hey Jealousy" is a great song, and as i've grown older, i've actually met a few people who could have been the dude singing. the "truth" of the experience being spoken to makes it an even better song imho.
