I've never heard anyone say 'Balearic beat'.

mm, it sounds kind of lame (the word 'beat' in a genre name generally sounds lame and pseudy to me?). 'Balearic house' i've seen used, though.

"Lullabye" I can totally see if it's the Extended Mix on Mixed Up - I've put that on quite a few balearic-y "Back to Mine" style comps I've made.

here's a moment where i get somewhat confused and ask questions:
- wtf is Kate Bush doing on that list?
- where do QV play into this? Force of Nature?
- has anyone heard the record by Lexx called "Sirocco"? it seems that that fits in nicely.

All the Music For Dreams/Kenneth Bager stuff works here. Although they've been pretty balearic-esque since the beginning. Bager has an instrumental version of Ripperton's "Les Fleur" that works pretty well.

the walk on the wildside version is good too.

Yeah I have that Lindstrom album, but I guess I'm probably confused by the definition of Balearic.

Do people agree with the Top 25 list above? I'll try to compile that and see how it flows. I'm also a bit puzled by Kate Bush being on that list.

i have like 1/2 the songs on that list (which made me rediscover that disgustingly good art of noise track) and the kate bush track fits in pretty well, i think

why are people surprised by Kate Bush and not CHRIS REA? his presence plus Carly Simon's just demonstrates how deliberately vague, nebulous and flexible the Balearic term always was. It's pretty much just based on whatever Jose Padilla or whoever was dozy enough to play at 8.36am in Cafe Del Mar 20 years ago.

Rea pretty much *is* adult contemporary, even if I do like "Josephine". He has recently gotten the hipster re-edit treatment by Todd Terje and the Eskimo/Mindless Boogie people, so I'm guessing he's still fresh in people's mind.

I've been listening to the music on this thread almost exclusivley for the last three days, giving this ^^^ a spin for ther first time in a year or so just this morning. shortly after listening to it, i left my house and went to my favorite coffe shop and it came on the sound system as i was leaving! kind of weird since that shop usually plays very quiet, anonymous jazz or korean pop music all the time.

I'm helping my family put together some songs to play at my brother's engagement party, and fittingly enough "La Ritournelle" was the first to receive the seal of approval.

I've been following these guys via myspace for over a year. looks like they're getting an Eskimo release.

I guess maybe they fall in the middle of the venn diagram with Cosmic/Beardo/Edits on one side and Balearic/Revivial/Bands on the other.

Speaking of Cure remixes, I'm listening to the relatively obscure "Let's go to Bed (milk mix)" and it would totally fit on a balearic mix. I think Saint Etienne's "Like a Motorway" would sit in there pretty well.

i grabbed that Sorcerer album. i really like it, but i think it coulda been better had he used more live instruments or analog equipment. it kinda suffers from a computer smoothness. (this is the same complaint i got from a friend when making music a few years ago on Reason)
