I have to confess that I like tons of New Order songs -- maybe enough to fill out a 40-song ballot -- but most of them I can't tell by name. I have to hear them and say, "Oh right, that one."

(which I guess is in keeping with their whole aesthetic, so maybe I shouldn't feel bad.)

making a top 30 was easy but 40 is oddly difficult

Deep cut/b-side reminder time.

Exhibit A: the sublime "Lonesome Tonight" - the last 2.5 minutes or so are so perfect...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AYrmcZWsBy4

Exhibit B: the nifty "Cries & Whispers" is this track...NOT "Mesh!"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0NZfjbht79M

Exhibit C:

The Peel Session version of "5-8-6" blows away the LP version...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_ZyZtM9h-3k

(That whole session is totally awesome, of course - Turn The Heater On, Too Late, We All Stand.)

i still don't like the ranking. why are we all forced to rank the tracks? i'd prefer to name 40 tracks in alphabetic order with each track getting the same number of points.

i thought all artist poll were run like this?

― Bee OK, Friday, May 17, 2013 8:09 PM (Yesterday)

In the polls I've run, I've accepted ballots from people who want to just split the points evenly among all the tracks they vote for. It's no biggie, but I've never listed it as an option because it's not what I/we are generally going for.

It took a few years to understand -- let alone feel -- the kind of morning after lovebuzz that Sumner sings about.

I like the option of doing fourty — it won't be very hard for me to fill out that list.

And yes, 'Dream Attack' will be rather high on my ballot.

Austin, Sunday, 19 May 2013 14:55 (eleven years ago) link

Revisiting New Order, I'm always struck by how much of a guitar (and bass) band they were. I think of them as part of the whole synth-linndrum wave, and they were, but that was just part of the picture.

something of an astrological coup (tipsy mothra), Sunday, 19 May 2013 16:20 (eleven years ago) link

i think 3 out of my top 5 new order songs are guitar songs

乒乓, Sunday, 19 May 2013 16:21 (eleven years ago) link

How will different versions of the same song be counted?

Temptation '82 vs. '87, 7-inch vs. 12-inch, etc.

Millsner, Sunday, 19 May 2013 17:13 (eleven years ago) link

I do think this is one of the most extraordinary pieces of music ever made. The bass sequencer always put me in mind of the musical spaceship at the end of Close Encounters; the melody is beautiful, insistent and mysterious; and then Martin Hannett added what sounds like a swarm of cyber insects descending at the close.

for those who wish to not rank their songs ballot.

Bee OK, Monday, 20 May 2013 01:17 (eleven years ago) link

Just working on my list. I made a playlist of my favourite songs, got it down to 45 songs now. I really don't want to leave any of these songs out.

Everyone Everywhere will be on my list. Actually surprised how many songs I love that came after Technique. On my playlist I have thirteen songs from the last three albums.

Kitchen Person, Monday, 20 May 2013 02:02 (eleven years ago) link

"Crystal" will certainly make mine.

A deeper shade of lol (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 20 May 2013 02:05 (eleven years ago) link

Yeah that will do well on mine.

I know a lot of people don't rate Republic that highly but I currently have five songs on my list from that album that I just don't want to cut.

Flicking through the last two albums I realised my favourite song is Waiting For The Siren's Call by quite a long way, really hope that has enough supporters to make it. The "How many times must I lose my way" bit is one of my favourite New Order moments.

The other big dilemma I'm having is if I'm going to include Blue Monday. It's hard to even rank that song against the others due to how many times I've heard it in my life. It's a great song but I barely ever play it put of choice anymore.

Kitchen Person, Monday, 20 May 2013 02:13 (eleven years ago) link

The post-(e)Electronic keyboards and muted Hooky bass are Republic's most crippling flaws. The tunes are ace.

A deeper shade of lol (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 20 May 2013 02:17 (eleven years ago) link

Happy to see people praising Movement. Always the dark horse from the catalogue - maligned by the band and critics alike - but I have always thought it a terrible special record. I can't think of another record that really sounds like this, but R.E.M.'s Murmur and Marianne Faithful's Broken English have a similar production feel... Very nocturnal-sounding.

I was discussing off-site the appeal of New Order's melodica songs. "Truth" ranks highly amongst my favourites.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ajtp7tPee1A

also "Hurt."

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FRu5CThEmcE

And "In A Lonely Place," "Turn The Heater On," "Your Silent Face," "Love Vigilantes," "Angel Dust" (listen during the guitar solo - more obvious in "Evil Dust"), "All The Way," "Run Wild," and possibly "Slow Jam" (sounds like it during the last 30 seconds or so). Can anyone spot more instances?

xpost - love "Waiting for the Sirens' Call."

Kent Burt, Monday, 20 May 2013 02:17 (eleven years ago) link

"Morning Night and Day" is my banger from that album.

― A deeper shade of lol (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn)

Yeah Hooky is barely on that album.

As for Siren's Call I think it loses it's way half way through. I can never really remember of the songs after I Told You So. Turn is the other song I think I'll end up voting for from that album, really surprised they didn't put that out as a single.

Kitchen Person, Monday, 20 May 2013 02:41 (eleven years ago) link

Dag, looking forward to this poll. May actually participate!

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 20 May 2013 02:55 (eleven years ago) link

By love "Waiting for the Sirens' Call" I meant the song... The album itself is OK, but loses steam midway as mentioned above.

Speaking of losing steam, I just listened to Republic for the first time in years. The first half sounds better than I remember, but the stretch of songs between "Young Offender" and "Avalanche" really draaaaags, though I like those two tracks themselves.

What I really love about early New Order is it seems like the songs are built around Steve's drums. This seems less apparent after PC&L.

Kent Burt, Monday, 20 May 2013 03:25 (eleven years ago) link

I really like Special from the second half of Republic, the strings at the end are a bit of an obvious Unfinished Sympathy rip off but it's a great tune.

I relistened to PC&L at the weekend and the drumming really stood out, 'Age of Consent' in particular.

I'm a casual New Order fan compared to many but shortlisting my favourite tracks gave me 40-odd songs to work with.

Gavin, Leeds, Monday, 20 May 2013 09:10 (eleven years ago) link

Somehow I just realized that for a band that's been active (for the most part) for 30+ years, they don't have a very large catalogue.

NoTimeBeforeTime, Monday, 20 May 2013 10:39 (eleven years ago) link

5 albums in the 80s (plus Substance) then 3 since 1990 means their discography is a bit lopsided on that score.

Neil S, Monday, 20 May 2013 10:41 (eleven years ago) link

Five albums in the 80's but they all have just eight or nine songs on them.

NoTimeBeforeTime, Monday, 20 May 2013 10:48 (eleven years ago) link

my favourite band ages 13-16, formative experience etc. has been fun going back to songs i haven't listened to in 15+ years, early singles & first two albums still sound amazing, then things get v sporadic.
vote Procession/Everything's Gone Green!

( X '____' )/ (zappi), Monday, 20 May 2013 11:37 (eleven years ago) link

Yeh, Procession is a bit overlooked, coming between Ceremony and Blue Monday. I love the way a pop song suddenly bursts out of that wonky keyboard wash, and Steve does those crisp snare rolls at the end.

kraudive, Monday, 20 May 2013 21:44 (eleven years ago) link

i got my 40 unranked songs together, there is one album i took every song of. besides that i think i enjoyed relistening to sonic youth more than relistening to new order. there were hardly any surprises here whereas i had forgotten about quite a lot of sonic youth stuff.

i am digging that album. just listening to it on spotify. there is nothing brilliant like eg bizarre love triangle of course but even the leftovers of their last album are pretty solid and mostly quite lovely. are they ever going to reform? hooky doing joy division and early new order albums live is really sad, recycling and reviving the past, what a waste of time.
