itunes tells me i have listened to "Christopher Columbus" over 100 times in the last month and a half or so.

tylerw, Tuesday, 14 May 2013 17:59 (eleven years ago) link

it's an awesome song. Left by Soft struck me as very Byrds-ian, and CC is Byrds-ian too, but in an almost entirely different way. Like I feel like the song kind of captures the sort of mood of pastoral folk-rock but I feel like Kilgour is deftly avoiding the usual folk-rock vocabulary. To these ears, he's doing something quite different here.

got the promo yesterday - sounds great on first listen. (but this guy can pretty much do no wrong imo). would be great if he could tour the states with the 8s.

tylerw, Friday, 30 May 2014 14:54 (ten years ago) link

Jealous of your promo action!

DK+H8's will be playing the Merge 25 thing in late July, so maybe they'll tour after that?

first is the worst (askance johnson), Friday, 30 May 2014 14:59 (ten years ago) link

that would be great. haven't seen him in ... seven years now? eesh.

tylerw, Friday, 30 May 2014 15:02 (ten years ago) link

Tyler, how does it rank in with his solo albums? The lead song from the vid sounds great.

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Friday, 30 May 2014 17:09 (ten years ago) link

oooh a tour!! would totally go!!

La Lechera, Friday, 30 May 2014 18:03 (ten years ago) link

he is the best.
xp need to have it sink in a bit, but it sounds of a piece with the last few records. some nice 12-string electric action happening.

tylerw, Friday, 30 May 2014 18:15 (ten years ago) link

Been pretty hooked on "Waveboarder" lately. "Push it on! Little fool!"

La Lechera, Wednesday, 4 June 2014 22:21 (ten years ago) link

Brazilian psych/tropicalia band. I caught them at Psych Fest. Not super into it, if I'm being honest.

EZ Snappin, Wednesday, 4 June 2014 22:23 (ten years ago) link

tylerw, Wednesday, 4 June 2014 22:30 (ten years ago) link

Me too.

erry red flag (f. hazel), Wednesday, 4 June 2014 23:02 (ten years ago) link

I'd really rather see the Heavy 8s than the Clean, but I ain't complaining.

looks like i'm going to portland.

JoeStork, Thursday, 5 June 2014 04:31 (ten years ago) link

My god, how have I not listened to this guy until now? I've been really into flying nun for a couple years now, but never really liked The Clean too much so I didn't bother to check out Kilgour's solo stuff. It's way more summery and psychedelic than anything else from that label. Sugar Mouth and Here Come the Cars are easily the coolest records I've heard from the early 90s.

crunchytunes, Thursday, 31 July 2014 15:07 (nine years ago) link

Damn right. So looking forward to seeing him Saturday.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 31 July 2014 15:52 (nine years ago) link

Here Come the Cars is an alltime album f'sure

sonic thedgehod (albvivertine), Thursday, 31 July 2014 15:55 (nine years ago) link

what a surprise this is awesome

just sayin, Thursday, 31 July 2014 17:46 (nine years ago) link

really is great. just heard hamish's new one too -- equally good.

tylerw, Thursday, 31 July 2014 17:51 (nine years ago) link

Oh really? Does Hamish sing? Is it like a variation on The Clean?

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Thursday, 31 July 2014 21:10 (nine years ago) link

yeah, this is his first "solo" recrod, but he's been doing his own stuff as Mad Scene for a while now. Worth checking out!
Here's a track from his new one: https://soundcloud.com/badabingrecords/hamish-kilgour-crazy-radiance/s-Tu4e3

four weeks pass...

yeah, this is really nice.

i've never listened to kilgour/the clean either, i dunno what it was, something about NZ music has always seemed kinda indistinct when i've checked it out in general, never sussed out a way in.

Man, the Christopher Columbus-Crow-Dropper sequence is a damn fine stretch of rock and roll, damn fine.

Not sure if it's been mentioned elsewhere, but Hamish Kilgour's put out his first solo album on Ba Da Bing.

etc, Sunday, 28 September 2014 21:45 (nine years ago) link

Yeah I need to check that out. I was reading an article about him just recently

David has a new album out, another collaboration with Sam Hunt:

The previous one, "Falling Debris", is really nice. Listening now, I had forgotten this gem.
