Or "madam," I guess I can't presume : )

That last bit is the beauty of it! A lot of the music on '1981' was either tucked away in my memory somewhere, or is indeed entirely new to me. The former also is a 'new experience' in a way, or 'renewed'.

And it is indeed sir :)

That's true-- re-new-to-you can be just as good. My justification for having a record collection I could never get through in a year, and records I've not heard in years.

looks like i beat ian here to promote our little scheme.

we've got ourselves a nerdy blogger mix exchange program going. he's made a beautiful mix that's up at my place, gris gris on your doorstep. good stuff.

i'll be sending him my response in the next week.

I hope you guys will give this one a listen--I've got cover art, but in a way, the header image of Andrew's site captures it better. . .

A very short mix up today, one that might look edgy and cerebral from the tracklist, but which actually consists of remarkably beautiful, emotional music:

Today I've made a pretty big addition to the Musicophilia blog: a second, non-mix blog: Musicophilia Daily

After five months, 30,000 views, and over 6,600 downloads of more than 30 mixes, it’s time for Musicophilia to expand. My ultimate goal when I started blogging was to help people hear great music, and hopefully get inspired to support the featured artists and independent music shops. I love mixes, and I think they can have value in and of themselves; but they take a lot of time (for mixers and listeners) and energy, and have their own inherent limitations in terms of variety and spontaneity. So to further Musicophilia’s goal, I’d like to have the flexibility to move beyond the mix-only format, to share individual tracks, links to recommended posts at other blogs, videos, reviews, out-of-print albums, previews of upcoming mixes, questions, and ideas; all sharing the spirit and sounds of Musicophilia. However, I would like to do so without cluttering up Musicophilia–which will continue to focus on carefully crafted mixes–or forcing more content on its subscribers than they bargained for. To that end, I’d like to present Musicophilia Daily.

Up so far today: streaming audio from La Dusseldorf, Our Daughter's Wedding, and Wapassou; and the video for Dif Juz' "No Motion". Hopefully I'll update at least once a day.

[If anybody knows how to get streaming audio to show up in posts when read in Google Reader, it'd be a big help to know--so far it just shows images and text from the posts.]

Please give it a look, give me feedback, suggestions, etc. Thanks!

Soundslike, Tuesday, 3 March 2009 13:26 (fifteen years ago) link

great new blog ian, congratulations. i can't help you about the streaming issue in the reader, actually personally i prefer it that way. i think people who like to listen to the stuff should go to the site.

something else i have noticed which i find much more serious is the fact that the audios do not stream at all chez moi. they keep buffering forever. i tried all three. could it be that the links are wrong (that was the reason for this behaviour when i had the problem on my blog)? or maybe that google does not allow streaming from google sites?

alex in mainhattan, Tuesday, 3 March 2009 18:44 (fifteen years ago) link

i just tried to audio link to a file on google sites on my blog and it worked. so i suppose there is something wrong with your links. did you delete the part starting with the question mark at the end (i did)?

alex in mainhattan, Tuesday, 3 March 2009 22:30 (fifteen years ago) link

Damn. Well--I don't think it is a problem with the links; more likely the Google concern. They were working for me earlier--did anyone else have them work? Then just now, after reading your posts, they didn't work. Then I signed into the account where I have the files hosted; suddenly they work again--but I can't imagine that would effect anyone but me. . .

So I guess this is a general call--anyone know a stable way to stream audio for free? Or, anyone a fan of the site who has a big heart and access to a little server space and a medium amount of bandwidth?

I hope this thing lives for more than one day. . .

Soundslike, Wednesday, 4 March 2009 00:54 (fifteen years ago) link

could it be that you set the site private? have a look under "site settings", "share this site". is there a checkmark under "advanced permissions" to make it public?

alex in mainhattan, Wednesday, 4 March 2009 06:19 (fifteen years ago) link

Hmm--did have it private, but I figured that just made the index .html private. . . I'd come up with a temporary fix, looking into just buying some server space/bandwidth--but it'd be great if Google just works. I'll test it and see if that fixes things--looking around, I'd seen reports of similar attempts tending to cease working after a week or so. Thanks for the help, Alex.

Soundslike, Wednesday, 4 March 2009 07:15 (fifteen years ago) link

Ok--so at least for now streams seem stable; I'm looking into buying some hosting space/bandwidth, but the front-end nature of the cost makes it seem a little foolish. . .

Suddenly Google Reader's little built-in audio player is working, which is good. But it adds a download link ("Original audio source") that I'd like to avoid--anybody know how to get rid of it?

Up so far:

  • Chrisma,
  • The Feed-Back,
  • La Dusseldorf,
  • Our Daughter's Wedding,
  • Wapassou;
coming in the next few days:

  • Wire,
  • His Name Is Alive,
  • Ut,
  • Peter Zummo with Arthur Russell,
  • an Arthur Russell reivew,
  • Erkin Koray,
  • Daniel Menche,
  • The Congos,
  • Steinski & Double Dee, and others. . .
So I hope you guys will check it out.

Soundslike, Thursday, 5 March 2009 08:23 (fifteen years ago) link

the google reader does not show the download link for my blog so i suppose it has to do with the reading settings (of wordpress) where i checkmarked the option that feeds should only show a summary, i.e. the text is cut after 50 words or so. people who want to read the whole post have to click to get on the site.

alex in mainhattan, Thursday, 5 March 2009 09:25 (fifteen years ago) link

may i ask how you succeeded in getting rid of the download link?

alex in mainhattan, Thursday, 5 March 2009 12:39 (fifteen years ago) link

I don't think I have succeeded--it seems as though it has something to do with whether or not Google has indexed new posts--so far it hasn't indexed the ones from today, maybe, and so Google Reader doesn't show the download link--unfortunately, nor does it show the audio player. I have a feeling both will show up later today. . .

So if anybody does know how to get rid of the link--let us both know : )

Can anyone tell me if streams are working for them right now at Musicophilia Daily? They're not for me, presently, but I've been having trouble with my browsers and flash lately, so it might be that.

I guess I'm probably just going to pony up for server space/bandwidth, doesn't seem to be any other reliable way to do this thing.

Worked for me last night.

legendary North American forest ape (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Monday, 9 March 2009 14:22 (fifteen years ago) link

they don't work for me neither right now. the progress bar goes up until the end and then it just says "buffering" in the player. i had this before, it seems to be an on/off thing.

alex in mainhattan, Monday, 9 March 2009 14:53 (fifteen years ago) link

Still no issues with Firefox and me.

EZ Snappin, Monday, 9 March 2009 15:07 (fifteen years ago) link

i am at home right now and while the wire song worked the other two new ones didn't. and the gamelan neither. as i have the same problem on my blog (where i use google sites as repository) i guess it is either the player or maybe wordpress (they had an outage this afternoon). btw i use firefox, too.

alex in mainhattan, Monday, 9 March 2009 18:54 (fifteen years ago) link

Thanks, all. Now works in IE for me; not in Firefox. As long as it's still streaming from the source, that's what I needed to know.

Soundslike, Monday, 9 March 2009 18:55 (fifteen years ago) link

So it seems like re: the Flash issue ("buffering" indefinitely) if you go into Tools->Add-Ons and disable and then re-enable your Flash plug-in, and then reload the page--streams work again. At least that seems to be working for me.

Still haven't figured out how to disable "Original audio source" links in Google Reader--love it if anyone knows how to fix that. . .

Soundslike, Tuesday, 10 March 2009 14:35 (fifteen years ago) link

that flash player deactivation and reactivation thing doesn't work for me, sorry. you are talking about shockwave flash here, aren't you?

concerning the audio links in the reader, i'd prefer if they were kept as otherwise most of the time i cannot listen to the music.

alex in mainhattan, Tuesday, 10 March 2009 19:41 (fifteen years ago) link

it seems like the first song is working and the others after that aren't any more.

here at home i have shockwave flash 9.0 r115. this is a joke. i can't even listen to youtube videos anymore. they stop for ages after two seconds and then there is no sound. not that i miss something but what the hell.

alex in mainhattan, Friday, 13 March 2009 16:44 (fifteen years ago) link

concerning the download link you could ask here as there is just a flash play button and no link in the posts in google feed reader, it is a tumblr blog though.

alex in mainhattan, Friday, 13 March 2009 22:06 (fifteen years ago) link

Thanks for that, Alex. I've actually become friends with that guy, he does a nice blog. I think it does come down to that one being a tumblr blog--tumbler hides the location of mp3s.

What I gather is that basically Reader just takes the first URL it finds that ends in ".mp3" and puts that in the built-in player (with the "original audio source" link for whatever reason). The only workaround I can think of right now is putting in a reference to some generic mp3 first in every post that just literally says "please visit musicophiliadaily.wordpress.com to listen to this track" and that will be what gets played in Reader, but that isn't what I really want. I want people to be able to stream the audio in Reader, just not download the source files. . .

I've got a new idea and I need your help:

Things are still getting cooking over at Musicophilia Daily a few weeks in. Already there have been over 40 tracks shared, numerous links, and even an original review. There’s another feature I’d like to add– but in order to do so I’ll need your participation. I’ve already talked with half a dozen of you whom I know to be talented musicians; I suspect, given the sort of stuff we’re listening to here, that there are many more of you. And I would like to showcase music made by Musicophilia listeners, for other listeners. I know it wouldn’t be the biggest bit of publicity you’re likely to receive, but it would certainly be reaching discerning and passionate ears.

So if you’d like to be featured, leave a comment with a link to your music (be sure to use a working email address–nobody but me will see it). I can’t guarantee anything, but if what you’re doing seems like it might appeal to Musicophilia listeners, I’ll get in touch with you. I’d like to use one or two choice tracks to stream directly in the blog post, along with artwork or a photograph, which I’ll need you to supply; then I’ll write up a snappy blurb, and link to your site(s)/MySpace/Facebook/etc. I feel like this would really add something to what I’m putting together with these two blogs, so I would really appreciate your participation.

Link to the post is here. Please don't be shy! Thanks!

A Musicophilia first just went up: a complete out-of-print post-punk album, one that no one else seems to have shared. It will definitely appeal to fans of the '1981' box set.

Check it out here.

The payoff who clicked through on the above April foolery was this:

'1981 Briefcase, Volume 1'

Among the highlights from the twenty artists in this collection: 1000 Ohm, Absolute Body Control, and Beranek (also featured in higher quality as part of the “1981 addendum” mix, ‘How To Say 1981 in German‘); early A Flock of Seagulls and ABC; Adam & The Ants; Alternative TV; 49 Americans side-group Avocados; pre-Bangles The Bangs; The Work-related Black Sheep; Blondie; and Cyndi Lauper’s first foray, Blue Angel, amongst others.

Catch it here, and new tracks each weekend here.

Ha! You totally fooled me! And almost a week after the 1st!

Thing is, Ive always had this fascination with the Seychelles Islands. So the second I saw that a lost classic post-punk album came from there, I clicked away. Great job!

Rough translation, back cover text:
"It's a big world--on a small record! This is the groove the world spins on today, with the melodies that get you singing and beats that can't be stopped! Take a trip at thirty-three and a third rotations per minute, the new speed of sound, and get yourself "funkified" These are the tunes that will bounce through the streets in France, in England, in the United States, in Italy, in Jamaica, even in Yugoslavia. You'll get it all with 'Les Miniatures'!"

It's available for download (with a couple streamable sample tracks, if you need convincing) at Musicophilia here.
