I wish had [sic] andre 3000 hadn't dated erykah badu (rap's yoko ono).

Give me a fucking break. She was with Andre 3000 - and they broke up - long before there were "problems" in his relationship with Big Boi. And she dated Common, too. So fucking what?

Oh, and for unfortunately-not-the-last-fucking-time, Yoko did NOT break up the Beatles. Their egos did. This is just ignorant bullshit.

Thomas Inskeep (submeat), Friday, 23 June 2006 16:08 (seventeen years ago) link

Yeah that's a strange connection to make. Besides, both Outkast tunes with a Badu guest spot are fantastic.

Ps Cheers Austin, no offence taken.

chap who would dare to be a nerd, not a geek (chap), Friday, 23 June 2006 16:15 (seventeen years ago) link

Yeah, I take that statement back, I was mostly kidding, besides without erykah we wouldn't have "Mrs. Jackson" (or Baduizm for that matter) and I know Ono is just a scapegoat for dumb fanboys. I just think Lennon/Andre's relationships with Ono/Badu widened rifts that were already there, you can't blame them, love changes people. I know it's not Badu's fault but I just really, really miss the old Andre (when he was still dope and liked making music/didn't think he was too good for rapping) and it's easy to blame her for it whether it's fair or not. But fuck it I loved hey ya just like everybody did, Andre can do whatever the hell he wants as long as he keeps making music.

Jesse Wilson (Uncle Fester), Friday, 23 June 2006 17:56 (seventeen years ago) link

but it doesn't sound like he's going to keep making music. (Honestly, I expect some kind of typically depressing downward slide for him...)

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 23 June 2006 18:03 (seventeen years ago) link

Yeah, I'm pretty much too old to get really worked up about this stuff (like when Andre the Giant and Hulk Hogan split and left me in a depressed daze for days), but something about that article really makes me sad.

matt2 (matt2), Friday, 23 June 2006 18:28 (seventeen years ago) link

they had a pretty good run as Best Band in the World (and i include sb/tlb in that run, cuz there's enough great stuff to justify it). can't last forever. if they're on to the diamonds and pearls phase of their career, so be it.

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Friday, 23 June 2006 18:54 (seventeen years ago) link

I would really, really, recommend anyone missing Outkast searching deeper into the catalog. As well as the four Goodie Mob albums, which I think are the equal of the Outkast albums, there are amazing albums from Witchdoctor, Jim Crow, Backbone, Slimm Calhoun, Cool Breeze, Killer Mike, Big Gipp....
I often find Organized Noise production the most interesting thing about Oukast - and all of those albums (mostly) share that production...

paulhw (paulhw), Friday, 23 June 2006 19:50 (seventeen years ago) link

Sleepy Brown's R&B albums are really good too.

deej.. (deej..), Friday, 23 June 2006 19:59 (seventeen years ago) link

Oh and Parental Advisory is great.

deej.. (deej..), Friday, 23 June 2006 20:00 (seventeen years ago) link

Maybe we should stop writing off Outkast until after Idlewild comes out.

Deej, is the P.A. "Straight No Chase" album good? What would you compare it to in the Dungeon Fam catalog?

paulhw (paulhw), Friday, 23 June 2006 20:29 (seventeen years ago) link

I'd like to put another hand up for The Love Below. (Minus r------ clichespeak.) Except for "Ghettomusick", "Church", & "Flip Flop Rock", nothing on Speakerboxxx has really held up for me.

I put on TLB last night after not listening to it (and not even hearing "Hey Ya" for about a year. It sounded really great and "Hey Ya" was (very much surprisingly) like an adrenaline rush. There's no way I think Speakerboxxx is better, so my hand goes up as well.

Yeah word, I'm too drunk again and love below was a lot more exciting despite the fact that speakerboxxx was more solid. Tell me you didn't pop in TLB first when you got that double disc. Organized Noize didn't make Outkast though, they were doing mostly their own production by second or third album, Outkast made Organized Noize and god bless them all
.

"Unhappy" "Bowtie" "The Rooster" "Last Call" etc didn't hold up w you?

"Knowing" is great as well.

chap who would dare to be a nerd, not a geek (chap), Saturday, 24 June 2006 12:40 (seventeen years ago) link

Never liked "Unhappy" or "Last Call" that much in the first place. The other two lost their flavor on the bedpost overnight.

"Unhappy" and "Tomb of the Boom" are my favorites from Speakerboxxx. so have we named all the songs yet?

one month passes...
"Morris Brown", "Idlewild Blue", thoughts?

I really like "Morris Brown". The unsettling thing about it is how totally made-for-Andre Scar's part sounds.

"Idlewild Blue" is okay. These songs are much more reassuring about the album (despite their seperation) than "The Mighty O" was.

It's Rodney, assume the position! (R. J. Greene), Tuesday, 8 August 2006 00:29 (seventeen years ago) link

I liked "Idlewild Blue" better when it was Stevie's "Higher Ground". "Morris Brown" has some good moments, though I am unsure if I think the song itself is better than an average Big Boi cut.

I agree both are leagues ahead of "The Mighty O", which was mighty bad.

EZ Snappin (EZSnappin), Tuesday, 8 August 2006 00:42 (seventeen years ago) link

Your right, it does sound like "Higher Ground". The Stevie song is more of a rocker though. This is laid back and front porch-y.

I'm really happy with "Morris Brown".

getting strange ass all around the globe (Neanderthal), Saturday, 12 April 2014 16:48 (ten years ago) link

"Are y'all alive?" Andre 3000 queried, more than once. "We just want to know one thing — are you having a good time?" Big Boi asked.

Yeah, I've never heard questions like this at a show before, let alone a hip-hop show.

And then here we are again:

Twitter was soon teeming with outraged posts from fans watching the audience's lackluster response on the livestream.

Fuck the livestream. If this is the level of criticism we're going to get, I half expect:

Big Boi was beset by microphone problems, based on his repeated requests to "turn my mic up!"

Or:

The crowd was really into it, but the hundreds of people sitting at home on their couches watching the stream were much more apathetic. "Yo, everyone home watching the stream," began Dre. "Y'all having a good time?" Alas, his query was met by silence, as the people at home could not actually respond out loud, but a few enthusiastic followers on Twitter responded with a resounding "yes!"

Josh in Chicago, Saturday, 12 April 2014 17:54 (ten years ago) link

sure, when you selectively hack apart the article and ignore the actual tweets from people who were there, it doesn't look quite so bad!

basically the crowd was totally wack and Andre eventually just started going through the motions and Miles Davised them for "Hey Ya"

i'm debating seeing them at Guava fest but I'm not sure how Florida is gonna treat them. plus it's $80 and the only other act on that day I like is Sleigh Bells (which is a 'kinda').

still kicking myself for saying "I'll buy tix later" in 2001 on the Stankonia tour and then having em sell out before I had the money

two months pass...

Phenomenal at Wireless in Finsbury Park yesterday. Only complaint is that in Birmingham the night before they had more time so also did Spottie, Ghetto Musick and International Players' Anthem. This is the London setlist:

Been watching a while, and Andre 3000 has busted out this death metal growl at least four or five times.

y'all gotta stop hating on Love Below "Prototype" is so awesome

nova, Sunday, 3 August 2014 09:48 (nine years ago) link

is it cool to hate Love Below now? You're right, that's one of the best songs on either album.

3kDk (dog latin), Monday, 4 August 2014 13:34 (nine years ago) link

He's still got the juice, but if he doesn't need the money, I respect him for not wanting to turn all eyes on him and do the album/pr/tour thing. It's got to be weird to know that millions of people are going to hear whatever you do and most will be disappointed no matter what.

"speakerboxxx is better than stankonia."

Some weird kind of cult I'm privy to here

candyman, Saturday, 31 October 2020 23:47 (three years ago) link

Stankonia is one of my favorite albums of all-time, and for a "messy" album, there's almost nothing I'd cut from it. But the hook on "Snappin and Trappin" is pretty annoying

Vinnie, Sunday, 1 November 2020 00:04 (three years ago) link

My only feedback about Stankonia is that Andre was very root with Erykah mama

"who cares what Andre's "solo career" is like. he's never even released a solo record. his legacy is outkast and an all time mc"

Yes hes an all time mc but hes now got the air of I'm too good to do this but ok sure since his asked if I really must then ok let me be so kind as to gift you an occasional verse when I can spare the time

As for no solo records, uh,there was that love below album, as well as that kids album. I'd say all those generous guest verses constitute a career of a sort
