Also: "Even In His Youth." Essential Nirvana song, yet somehow it didn't make Incesticide, and the non-WTLO version of it isn't as available as it should be

re: Even In His Youth, i kinda like that they had songs exclusively left as b-sides.. and the teen spirit CD single wasn't hard to find. IIRC CD singles for Nirvana Pearl Jam and NIN were in demand in mid-90's and got reissued because of rabid fans hunting down the b-sides.

billstevejim, Tuesday, 19 February 2013 19:06 (eleven years ago) link

Oh man, when the Jeremy single was no longer a "Rare Import" and just anybody could have access to Yellow Ledbetter, that was the real day that grunge died.

Can't somebody on this thread who's good at ripping and uploading and general computing put together an "Incesticide 2" for the rest of us?

if you're on the spotify...

So glad you got "Pay to Play" on there. Exactly the type of track that should have been on the box but wasn't

Evan R, Tuesday, 19 February 2013 20:16 (eleven years ago) link

Good playlist, although I sense a difference between "Incesticide" and standard b-sides collections. The sequencing and song choices make it feel like an album, similar to Pieces Iscariot.

billstevejim, Tuesday, 19 February 2013 20:28 (eleven years ago) link

why is the version of "I Hate Myself and Want to Die" that's on the boxed set so much worse than the one on "The Beavis and Butthead Experience"?

Poliopolice, Tuesday, 19 February 2013 20:31 (eleven years ago) link

looks like the final version isn't on spotify.

"Marigold" . . . so gorgeous . . . ;_;

this is called money bags (Phil D.), Tuesday, 19 February 2013 20:49 (eleven years ago) link

lyrics are terrible

Poliopolice, Tuesday, 19 February 2013 20:58 (eleven years ago) link

the version of marigold on pocketwatch is more charming, i think. just grohl singing and playing by his lonesome (which might also be the case on the in utero version, but it still seems less casual)

Philip Nunez, Tuesday, 19 February 2013 21:03 (eleven years ago) link

marigold is so good, i love it.

"MV" should be somewhere near the end IMO.

I just posted this thread yesterday:
Mark Lanegan - The Winding Sheet (1990, Sub Pop Records)

Can't help but feel that this record was a huge influence on the band's post-Bleach sound, especially this song:

When I was at college we were doing vocal warm-ups as a group and at one point our tutor was like "now go down to the lowest note you can get to", and one the guys was like "ah, the 'Moist Vagina' sound!"... this woman on the course then turned to him and went "how the hell do you know?" :'''D

Love Incesticide, particularly the second side. It's so fucking dirty.

dog latin, Tuesday, 19 February 2013 21:57 (eleven years ago) link

I dont care anything about any box or Incesticide 2: can we all agree that VCV and Hate Myself should be automatic bonus tracks on any reprintings of In Utero henceforth?

I haven't listened to it in a long while, but dude it's got Aneurysm on it, which is secretly their best song. And I'll always have a soft spot for Hairspray Queen. The first side is almost as poppy as Nirvana get, but the second side is a total noise fest.

dog latin, Wednesday, 20 February 2013 10:04 (eleven years ago) link

heh I think I have 7 volumes of Outcesticide on my HD.

it's a purposeful mess, and i don't think it holds together as a complete listen, and as much as i love sludge the second side is a sloooooog. but the riff to aero-zeppelin gets stuck in my head for days and just won't shift.

Version of Aneurysm on the Teen Spirit single > the version of Aneurysm on this.

My vote for the hidden track in the imaginary Incesticide II:

Have we ever done a Nirvana tracks poll?

Raymond Cummings, Wednesday, 20 February 2013 12:03 (eleven years ago) link

I haven't heard those b-sides in years, and this thread inspired me - but my boxes of CDs with the singles are in another country.
I had a look on iTunes and the singles aren't on there - is there any legitimate way to buy them, alone or collected, outside of eBay/Discogs/that sort of thing?

Walter Galt, Wednesday, 20 February 2013 13:56 (eleven years ago) link

tbh I didn't realise the versions on the singles were different to the versions on Incesticide/box set! The only Nirvana single I've got is Lithium. That's somewhat annoying, you'd think they'd have compiled the B-sides by now.

Just noise and screaming and no musical value at all. (Colonel Poo), Wednesday, 20 February 2013 14:05 (eleven years ago) link

they did release a singles box set late 90s

I had them on 12" so I only had maybe 1 or2 cd singles but didn't buy the singles box. My mates wee brother did though. Think they had lyrics included which was nice.

Looks like a box set of the Nevermind singles as 12"s goes for about £50 new - looks like it was a Record Store Day thing a couple of years ago. Individual CDs seem to be around (but to get, say "I Hate Myself..." you have to buy the "Beavis and Butthead" soundtrack CD. Amazing that in all the Nirvana cash-grabbing nobody compiled these things! Surely that's not an oversight. Wonder what the deal is.

Walter Galt, Wednesday, 20 February 2013 14:39 (eleven years ago) link

"I hate myself" is an extra track on the "Penny Royal Tea" CD single.

Unfortunately, only 10 copies exist, or thereabouts.

Mark G, Wednesday, 20 February 2013 14:48 (eleven years ago) link

luckily a friend gave me the beavis and butthead cd years ago

The Bleach-era b-sides (iirc) are all on WTLO. The Nevermind b-sides are all on the nevermind deluxe edition. I'm guessing they'll be compiling all the remaining b-sides for an In Utero deluxe thing.

billstevejim, Wednesday, 20 February 2013 15:13 (eleven years ago) link

"Been a Son" was only on the UK only "Blew" e.p. but is on the "Nirvana" hits comp.

how's life, Wednesday, 20 February 2013 15:36 (eleven years ago) link

here's my attempt at "incesticide 2" following roughly the same format (or as close as I could get).

1. I Hate Myself and Want to Die
2. Sappy
3. Spank Thru
4. Pen Cap Chew
5. Return of the Rat
6. D7
7. Here She Comes Now
8. Something In The Way (BBC)
9. Verse Chorus Verse
10. Big Cheese
11. Old Age
12. If You Must
13. Blandest
14. MV
15. Where Did You Sleep Last Night

billstevejim, Wednesday, 20 February 2013 16:26 (eleven years ago) link

ok replace any 2 of those with "Token Eastern Song" and "Even In His Youth" because most of the songs listed there are too down-tempo.

billstevejim, Wednesday, 20 February 2013 16:40 (eleven years ago) link

"Verse Chorus Verse" was probably my fave Nirvana song when i was a kid, i think i heard it on the radio at one point and i missed the song title. For years the only copy i had was a midi file in a DOOM .wad.

Emperor Cos Dashit (Adam Bruneau), Wednesday, 20 February 2013 17:04 (eleven years ago) link

D7 cover just slays. is the song at the end of No Alternative sappy or v/c/v? because that might be my favourite nirvana song ever.

SOYLENT GREEN IS SHEEPLE (stevie), Wednesday, 20 February 2013 17:28 (eleven years ago) link

i think that's verse chorus verse

congratulations (n/a), Wednesday, 20 February 2013 17:29 (eleven years ago) link

I still call it "Verse Chorus Verse." It was called "Sappy" the first 2-3 times they tried to record it. He was known for changing song titles though (like "Imodium") and the final version on No Alternative was called VCV although there's also an earlier demo for a different song with the same title. Since it was an unlisted bonus track it's been kind of open-ended. Everyone I knew at the time called it "Verse Chorus Verse," but since the late 90's, internet-tuff Nirvana fans have argued that it must be called "Sappy."

billstevejim, Wednesday, 20 February 2013 17:44 (eleven years ago) link

Blandest is such an amazing song. It's hard to believe they just threw it away. Contains about the best line from a song ever: "I need you around / to remind what not to become"

Poliopolice, Wednesday, 20 February 2013 20:26 (eleven years ago) link

That specific version of "Beeswax" is one of their best songs.

billstevejim, Thursday, 23 June 2016 07:26 (seven years ago) link

probably because Grohl improves on the original drumming

billstevejim, Thursday, 23 June 2016 07:26 (seven years ago) link

Yeah, and Kurt's singing and guitar playing are much better. The version on Insecticide is pre-Bleach. Shame they didn't play it ever again after that Argentina show.
