2012 Tracks Poll Theme Park of Ballots, Stats and Ephemeral Controversy

Doesn't count guest spots and I think each ballot can only vote once for each artist - if a ballot votes for an artist twice, the top-scoring one is used.

To give you an idea of how hopelessly, completely out-of-touch I am with the ILX tracks poll, I was *convinced* that Hacker by Death Grips would be a seriously big hitter this year. Not only did I have to nominate it at the last minute, but one other person voted for it. It's like there's been a gigantic disconnection somewhere and suddenly there's just a raft, an open sea and somewhere far away, a land populated exclusively by club DJs

it's all dream house at the end of the day though

only 3 of the top 10 are club tracks, really. 6 of the top 20

fair enough. ykwim. electronic/rnb/rap/house pop. not that I have a problem with it, house style yknow, as twere, but as said elsewhere the rock/indie/alt/experimental/pop-but-weird stuff that is making it through just isn't really scratching an itch this year, kfw, walker and cherry thing aside. but i'd be churlish to complain too much - the people have spoken. this website has given me the vast majority of my favourite bands and will continue to do so, this is just a weird disconnection, not a problem

One weird thing this year was the massive concentration of votes in the top 3 - Miguel's points total would have won any other year. Not sure that had any observable knock-on effects though.

i think a lot of people who would vote for more rock and shit would just vote for the ablums instead. i did, my tracks ballot was just a bunch of pop music and some dance cuts

yeah but the thing is, i'm just as interested in individual tracks as albums these days, so this poll has become a useful yearly resource

I think one of the things that drives this is that the rock/indie/alt/experimental/pop-but-weird stuff tend to lack both the rolling threads and the "OMG this track" individual threads that the electronic/rnb/rap/house/pop/etc things that placed did, plus maybe it's slightly more international? IDK, for example I loved Sharpie Crows' Thank You Ladies For The Spread (Can w/bleary horns & postpunk guitars, vague Pulp vibes, ironic evocation of New Zealand southern Gothic Ronald Hugh Morrieson etc vibes) but I'd have no idea where to talk about it on ILx and didn't bother nominating it; as much as I prefer to listen to Beak>'s "Wulfstan II" over the album it didn't seem like anyone else felt the same way etc.

People stretch thread boundaries all the time. If I have something that doesn't obviously fit one place or another, I will generally just go for close enough.

I even made a catch-all thread for other things last year called Johnny Fever's Not-Pop Not-Indie Shambhala, but it got very little action.

When I dipped into those threads they seemed more about talking about albums rather than posting Youtubes or w/e of really great songs - probably more my fault for laziness at checking out albums but they seemed less uh convenient for cherrypicking than equiv threads in other genres.

Also, I kinda got put off by talking about NZ music on ILx back around '03 where you'd only get replies if it was about 80s Flying Nun stuff.
