noz gonna drag his feet the whole way on the keef thing

D-40, Thursday, 27 December 2012 20:20 (eleven years ago) link

not that u guys were expecting me to respond any other way. but the soulja boy comparison suggests a level of accidental & coincidence where i'm hearing more intent & personality but ymmv

D-40, Thursday, 27 December 2012 20:22 (eleven years ago) link

but 'ineptitude,' really

D-40, Thursday, 27 December 2012 20:23 (eleven years ago) link

the other way the soulja comparison doesn't work is that it was the song that went viral, not the artist. ppl liked the dance & the video & werent wrapped up in soulja boy as a person iirc? i mean, we were all around when it hit but i don't recall the same level of connection to who soulja boy was

uhhh isn't rapradar like a haven for middlebrow aftermath bullshit rap or am i missing something completely

no it is, which is the stupidest thing. i'm being accused of harming "the culture" via my position of power by a guy who runs a site that posts every iggy azealea mp3.

Forks whats a couple releases you liked this year that never got brought up itt?

small-scale fux with (Spottie_Ottie_Dope), Thursday, 27 December 2012 20:58 (eleven years ago) link

hip hop releases? not many and primarily far more poppy than this thread cares to deal with.
I disagree with a lot of trap uber alles and crit rhetoric that gets slung around on here but it's been an excellent source for new music this year, no doubt. it's why i'm here!

ILX is not a non-profit — we are just not profitable (forksclovetofu), Thursday, 27 December 2012 21:01 (eleven years ago) link

Yeah hip-hop only.

small-scale fux with (Spottie_Ottie_Dope), Thursday, 27 December 2012 21:03 (eleven years ago) link

E-40 - The Block Brochure v 1,2,3
Killer Mike - R.A.P. Music
Kendrick Lamar - good kid, m.A.A.d city
Wiley - Evolve or Be Extinct
Ab Soul - Control System

Cool, I still haven't managed to get through that El-P album yet.

small-scale fux with (Spottie_Ottie_Dope), Thursday, 27 December 2012 21:08 (eleven years ago) link

Need to hear that Freeway too.

small-scale fux with (Spottie_Ottie_Dope), Thursday, 27 December 2012 21:08 (eleven years ago) link

im sure ppl here are as interested in hearing forks' thoughts on chief keef as they are mine at this pt

D-40, Thursday, 27 December 2012 21:09 (eleven years ago) link

i found the el-p pretty hit and miss but the hits are meaningful
one off singles by artists that are new to me are the most useful impact stuff on this thread for my money. that's how i vibed with 100s and why i've listened to this zilla track like nine zillion times this year

This is my jam off that

small-scale fux with (Spottie_Ottie_Dope), Thursday, 27 December 2012 21:19 (eleven years ago) link

keef album is interesting in its minimalism; i don't exactly want to listen to it but its something of a master class. Quivering candy painted suspension wires. singles are still totally unpalatable but something clicked when I tried:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZQCyhaOt9bc
so i'm not coming around exactly so much as i am getting what there is to get as opposed to, say, gucci and waka who still are opaque to me even after i've tried for years

That synth(?) sound was cool at first but then just kinda dominated after I got about half way through. I like though.

Lol I posted this tape in the ILH thread.

Zilla. Hardly a marketable rapper but I love the guy.

dyslectic Christ Brown (longneck), Friday, 28 December 2012 00:08 (eleven years ago) link

And two out of his three releases this year were pretty great even though no one really cares.

dyslectic Christ Brown (longneck), Friday, 28 December 2012 00:14 (eleven years ago) link

hoping that next year's thread is gonna have a better title so that I'll actually bookmark it because goddamn how did I miss out on gunplay this year

i've been going thru some rap EOY lists and discovering some amazing trax. in partic, so far:

troy ave - i know why you mad
mic terror - rodney king
fam-lay - clap clap <= X A MILLION
feva - handsome
dj paul - cocky
gunplay - take this <= HOW HAD I NOT HEARD THIS GUNPLAY SONG OMFG THE BEAT
ty$ - the weekend [this wasn't on the ty$ mixtape i have, it's...different in a good way, those weird horns really liven up the warmed-up rack city beat]
lil dev - i'm perkins
ca$h out - cashin' out

the worst is the rick ross/drake/french montana song, a less palatable combination of rappers on one song i cannot imagine

lex pretend, Friday, 28 December 2012 19:48 (eleven years ago) link

lol you will probably take some shit for mentioning ty $ as 'rap' (although his cadences/melodies always sounded so 'contemporary singsong rapper' to me that i was surprised to find out he was categorized as a singer myself)
