Stormy Davis (diamond), Friday, 4 February 2005 04:00 (nineteen years ago) link

fucking soulseek needs to start working again like right now

Roger Fidelity (Roger Fidelity), Friday, 4 February 2005 04:07 (nineteen years ago) link

do they not have mp3s on their label website? (JetJaguwar?)

donut christ (donut), Friday, 4 February 2005 04:15 (nineteen years ago) link

Jagjaguwar, actually. MP3s here: http://www.jagjaguwar.com/mp3/index.htm

My sideburns just grew an two inches listening to this album.

Dave Segal (Da ve Segal), Friday, 4 February 2005 04:35 (nineteen years ago) link

"just grew two inches..." rather.

Dave Segal (Da ve Segal), Friday, 4 February 2005 04:35 (nineteen years ago) link

haha.. yup, this sounds like Outsideinside-lite. Me like.

donut christ (donut), Friday, 4 February 2005 04:52 (nineteen years ago) link

oh yeah, man, these are great. Thanks for the link Dave.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Friday, 4 February 2005 05:03 (nineteen years ago) link

It should be noted that the album is far from monolithic-sounding, so those MP3s are not totally indicative of Black Mountain.

Dave Segal (Da ve Segal), Friday, 4 February 2005 05:54 (nineteen years ago) link

the only song i really don't like is that first one, really. sounds like a Kings of Leon / Make*Up mash-up

Roger Fidelity (Roger Fidelity), Friday, 4 February 2005 05:58 (nineteen years ago) link

Stirmonster, both the Observer (not the useless OMM) and the Sunday Times raved about it in January, quite accurately too and deranged (un)style mag GFN did a piece on them in their first issue. It isn't officially out for a couple of weeks, so the kiddies press won't notice it until then, if ever.

snotty moore, Friday, 4 February 2005 12:13 (nineteen years ago) link

all my emails got bounced back to me. wtf. if soulseek is working i have it. formerlypoopsmcgee

Big Baby Bingo (Chris V), Friday, 4 February 2005 14:49 (nineteen years ago) link

really snotty? for my sins, i do read the sunday times but i must have missed that.

stirmonster, Friday, 4 February 2005 15:02 (nineteen years ago) link

so, is the final track on this supposed to be a bunch of static?? Or did I just get a corrupted file?

Stormy Davis (diamond), Saturday, 5 February 2005 00:18 (nineteen years ago) link

"so, is the final track on this supposed to be a bunch of static?? Or did I just get a corrupted file?"

The latter.

Dave Segal (Da ve Segal), Saturday, 5 February 2005 02:52 (nineteen years ago) link

the 'untitled' track, you mean? it was static for me.

derrick (derrick), Saturday, 5 February 2005 05:09 (nineteen years ago) link

yeah i gots me the static too.

Big Baby Bingo (Chris V), Saturday, 5 February 2005 13:45 (nineteen years ago) link

ah ok ... I see what's going on here. Last track "Untitled" is apparently some kind of 'multimedia' deal. I guess I'll just have to wait until I pick up the CD proper to watch it. ( which, uh, in case anyone from Jagjaguwar tracks their referrer logs back from Dave's link -- I will buy it!! and I will proselytize and shout from the mountaintops and proclaim its greatness to all of my dirtbag stoner friends)

Anyway, yeah this album in incredible. Well, maybe *incredible* is a tad too strong, but it's still pretty damn great. They "get" it. Always so encouraging to encounter a new band who gets it. The drummer is real solid. This album makes me want to have sex. I listened to it twice last night walking around the city. I don't so much hear the Led Zep comparisons though. The album is kinda front-loaded to make you think it's gonna be a Pageian riff-o-rama, but it's pretty subtle, dreamy in places. the Head East comparison was pretty funny though. And not all that inaccurate! I thought Head East had a girl singer too for the longest time. Then I finally picked up a copy of Flat As a Pancake and looked at the picture on the back of the dudes eating lunch, and I was like "where is the girl??"

Can't wait to see 'em live.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Saturday, 5 February 2005 21:17 (nineteen years ago) link

So this is good, is it? (Now I like me Dead Meadow but I've only heard the live album -- they're friendly fellers, though, met 'em in London.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 5 February 2005 21:22 (nineteen years ago) link

they're a new band, i guess, but they've all been percolating around Vancouver for a good 4 years, at least.

i'll probably pick this up, you know. it is good.

derrick (derrick), Sunday, 6 February 2005 08:12 (nineteen years ago) link

oh, and they're playing with kinski next month, as well as oneida(who i've never heard). i think i'll go. i really like 'set us free'.

derrick (derrick), Sunday, 6 February 2005 09:04 (nineteen years ago) link

Is it me or does "No Hits" borrow heavily from Giorgio Moroder's "Chase" from the Midnight Express soundtrack? It might even be a sample.

Mark (MarkR), Sunday, 6 February 2005 16:44 (nineteen years ago) link

zep/blue cheer camaro '70s sludge rock my ass, on their albums these guys sound like a friggin shoegaze band. they sound anemic and amorphous, they don't rock, and neither did pink mountaintops. jeez.

Ain't no-one stopping ya.

I admit the more there is talk the more I am duly curious.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 11 February 2005 16:27 (nineteen years ago) link

except my crazy head...the bingo will not smoke pot.

Big Baby Bingo (Chris V), Friday, 11 February 2005 16:41 (nineteen years ago) link

I am digging political messages on this album. "Nobody likes your fucked up plans of shooting up some foreign land." Done well these days protest music is especially appreciated.

I'm chiming in since I've seen these guys play a bunch of shows now -- I wasn't sold on the album till I saw them play stuff live, b/c I actually DON'T think it's all that heavy/sludgy/sabbathy. It's kind of like some Dutch band or something trying to be heavy, and not making it, but what they come up with is totally great. Live it's tremendously cool, not heavy, just its own fucking thing.

Hurlothrumbo (hurlothrumbo), Thursday, 24 March 2005 19:56 (nineteen years ago) link

and "No Hits" DEFINITELY sounds like "the Chase" -- but it's not a sample, it's a little different.

Hurlothrumbo (hurlothrumbo), Thursday, 24 March 2005 19:58 (nineteen years ago) link

Addendum -- it's fucking-music, b/c the rhythm section is tight and mellow, like some good Atlantic soul band. It doesn't actually *sound* like that stuff (much), but that's the feel of the bass and drums. Not sabbath.

Hurlothrumbo (hurlothrumbo), Thursday, 24 March 2005 20:31 (nineteen years ago) link

not sabbath, not heavy. Neil Young, people, early Neil Young, from the vocals (when he sings "let's smoke some kill" it sounds like a Neil Young impression) to the vaguely spaghetti Western guitars that sound like something circa Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere. (and with the girl and the sense of doom and protest in the lyrics, there's some "Gimme Shelter" going on too.)

singbad, Thursday, 24 March 2005 20:59 (nineteen years ago) link

um I just did a control-F 'find' on this thread for the word "Sabbath", and the first time it appears is Hurlothrumbo's post at 1:56 PM TODAY. The second and final time it appears is in Singbad's post. So I don't know who these imaginary "people" are that singbad is addressing, but, you know, thanks anyway.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Thursday, 24 March 2005 21:28 (nineteen years ago) link

wait, are you kidding, or are that lost that you'd control-F "Sabbath"?

singbad, Thursday, 24 March 2005 21:38 (nineteen years ago) link

I'm trying to figure out who the fuck the "people" are in this thread that mentioned the band Black Sabbath. There were none. Nobody mentioned them except the post immediately preceding yours.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Thursday, 24 March 2005 21:41 (nineteen years ago) link

yeah, i don't know either. i was agreeing with the other guy just before me. ask him? or just snap at me again, i don't mind

singbad, Thursday, 24 March 2005 21:44 (nineteen years ago) link

since you seem out of sorts, whoever you are, i read the whole thing for you. the guy who started it said sludge, 70s style. i guess most people think of sabbath when they read that? are you disagreeing, or just fooling?

singbad, Thursday, 24 March 2005 21:49 (nineteen years ago) link

ha ha, I just wrote heavy/sludgy/sabbathy cause they all seem to go together, and cause I've heard lots of people compare Black Mountain to sabbath in conversations -- sorry to be so inaccurate in my assessments; please change "sabbathy" to "zeppelinly" in my post(s) for greater thread-accuracy, and I'll stand by it. Sheesh.

Hurlothrumbo (hurlothrumbo), Thursday, 24 March 2005 21:51 (nineteen years ago) link

xpost.

Hurlothrumbo (hurlothrumbo), Thursday, 24 March 2005 21:51 (nineteen years ago) link

i say stick with it. i've only ever heard people compare them to sabbath. when i first got it my roommate asked me if it was some sabbath album he hadn't heard. and they decided to call themselves black mountain, not led mountain.

singbad, Thursday, 24 March 2005 21:53 (nineteen years ago) link

This will certainly be in my top 5 of 2008. Phenomenal.

just finally got the s/t record...great stuff...can't wait to get the new one.

first one is interesting mix of kinda VU style fuzzy pop tunes and ominous sabbath-goes-prog doomy epics...love it!

So they got some of their gear stolen while they were on tour and now a bunch of local bands here are holding a benefit gig for them. Gotta wonder why Black Mountain don't just play a benefit concert for themselves!

everything, Tuesday, 29 November 2016 01:15 (seven years ago) link

because their gear got stolen

adam, Tuesday, 29 November 2016 01:29 (seven years ago) link

If they stood on milk crates playing kazoos Black Mountain would sell more tickets than these local bozos no-ones ever heard of.

Saw Black Mountain last night. They were really good live. The synths and keyboards sounded huge. Need to finally break down and check out some of their records.
