i dont think hes pandering to 'indie people',hes just a walking snorg tee (c) shipley

and what, Thursday, 13 September 2007 17:03 (sixteen years ago) link

eh, although I called him "Euro-pandering" in another thread just now I do agree, but I think it kinda goes without saying. i mean it's not like there's a huge built-in audience for Daft Punk/Peanut Butter & Jelly that's there to cash in on. if anything he's going after the big white folks money with the Adam Levine/Chris Martin collabs.

(xpost lol what he said)

Alex in Baltimore, Thursday, 13 September 2007 17:05 (sixteen years ago) link

I'm pretty sure Peanut Butter & Jelly is even more popular than Coldplay.

The Reverend, Thursday, 13 September 2007 17:10 (sixteen years ago) link

I thought for a second he meant Kanye sampled Peanut Butter Jelly Time.

the "good life" video is prob. not going to help kanye's indie-pandering image

^@^, Thursday, 13 September 2007 17:12 (sixteen years ago) link

It's Peter Bjorn & John time.

The Reverend, Thursday, 13 September 2007 17:12 (sixteen years ago) link

you shouldnt underrate the influence of catchdubs blendizzle dudes tho, it may be a small portion of kanye's audience but its one with a direct line to lots of his press/media coverage - rapping over songs from the OC isnt just to get that college rap dough, its a good way to get critics to ignore your other shortcomings

and what, Thursday, 13 September 2007 17:14 (sixteen years ago) link

I like the audaciousness of having two of the most popular rnb singers of the moment on "Good Life" to sing one line each.

The Reverend, Thursday, 13 September 2007 17:14 (sixteen years ago) link

what the hell, when did everyone forget that Daft Punk is GREAT? Ubiquitous ans snorg are not the only options here.

kenan, Thursday, 13 September 2007 17:16 (sixteen years ago) link

I had no idea what you were talking about until I looked it up, that's so weird. What lines are Ne-Yo and John Legend singing? I don't remember anything sounding like them on the song at all. (xp)

Alex in Baltimore, Thursday, 13 September 2007 17:18 (sixteen years ago) link

moreover when did Daft Punk become shorthand for INDIE? I mean they've had gold plaques and videos all over MTV in America, they're not exactly below the mainstream radar.

Alex in Baltimore, Thursday, 13 September 2007 17:20 (sixteen years ago) link

more like baduation

roxymuzak, Thursday, 13 September 2007 17:21 (sixteen years ago) link

They come at the end of the second verse, Ne-Yo first, then Legend.

The Reverend, Thursday, 13 September 2007 17:30 (sixteen years ago) link

its like when slick rick & q-tip on girls girls girls

and what, Thursday, 13 September 2007 17:31 (sixteen years ago) link

And Biz, too!

The Reverend, Thursday, 13 September 2007 17:33 (sixteen years ago) link

i like the good life video. is that whole bape color pattern style thing really supposed to be credited to catchdubsizzle dudes? pharell's been rocking this sort of eccentric urban colorforms thing since most of those dudes were in college

deej, Thursday, 13 September 2007 17:44 (sixteen years ago) link

the aesthetic runs deeper than 'lol hipsters' i mean, altho its not one i care for regardless

deej, Thursday, 13 September 2007 17:44 (sixteen years ago) link

nobody is saying al's boy lacrate invented bape hoodies but kanye nerding it up & rapping over the garden state soundtrack cant hurt him in the corny hipster identification dept

and what, Thursday, 13 September 2007 17:49 (sixteen years ago) link

and yeah daft punk is daft punk but its suspect when you make such a huge blendizzle deal out of it instead of just sampling house music on the low

and what, Thursday, 13 September 2007 17:50 (sixteen years ago) link

theres definitely something very limited edition vinyl toy about the way kanye is marketed now

and what, Thursday, 13 September 2007 17:51 (sixteen years ago) link

well i'm sure what Kanye's doing does appeal to some indie kids, but it probably turns off the hipster rap fan sect that REALLY WANTS to believe that the Clipse and Juelz really do deal.

Alex in Baltimore, Thursday, 13 September 2007 17:52 (sixteen years ago) link

when all is said and done i'd probably be more down w/ this phase of his career if he chopped Can and Daft Punk samples as well as he used to chop Al Green and Lenny Williams samples.

Alex in Baltimore, Thursday, 13 September 2007 17:53 (sixteen years ago) link

Kanye never made a big deal out of it, blogs did.

Whiney G. Weingarten, Thursday, 13 September 2007 17:54 (sixteen years ago) link

well, Kanye hasn't featured every artist (or at least people dressed as those artists lol robot suits) he's sampled in the videos for his songs, just Daft Punk.

Alex in Baltimore, Thursday, 13 September 2007 17:57 (sixteen years ago) link

yeah exactly i think itd be fair to say if for example he did 'through the wire' as featuring chaka khan and had chaka kahn in the video hed be trying to appeal to 80s rnb/quiet storm/jess's mom type ppl

and what, Thursday, 13 September 2007 18:00 (sixteen years ago) link

hey, well he did have Chaka come and sing with him at the VMA's that year.

Alex in Baltimore, Thursday, 13 September 2007 18:01 (sixteen years ago) link

like, thats the difference really - sample black music its just another beat, sample white music and its a 'mash-up' and you get a mtv news segment & 3 posts on the fader blog

and what, Thursday, 13 September 2007 18:02 (sixteen years ago) link

So "Doggy Dogg World" was Snoop's attempt to connect to 50-year-old Dramatics fans?

otm

x-post

Yeah, again MTV News and Fader are making a big deal out of it, not Kanye.

Don't think Ye is doing some contrived publicity stunt because rockist dipshits can't wrap their head around that fact that hip-hop's been sampling rock bands for 30 years

Whiney G. Weingarten, Thursday, 13 September 2007 18:04 (sixteen years ago) link

All the LOL CAN OMG on this board alone is like o_O

Get one "Planet Rock"

Whiney G. Weingarten, Thursday, 13 September 2007 18:05 (sixteen years ago) link

But they only sample classic rock, right? And stuff that was widespread popular! So it's news.

(Don't tell Liquid Liquid)

xp so marketing-obsessed kanye doesnt think about what the response could be to anything he does? anyway im pretty sure he was going omg lol daft punk more than anybody at the collabo

and what, Thursday, 13 September 2007 18:09 (sixteen years ago) link

I think it's 'news' partly because most of the time the party line on modern rock/rap collabs is "lol why do rappers only like crappy popular rock like Coldplay and Linkin Park"

Alex in Baltimore, Thursday, 13 September 2007 18:10 (sixteen years ago) link

I'm sure when Kanye goes drinking and clubbing with hot models and incredibly famous people, he's not thinking "omg lol" every time the DJ undoubtedly plays Daft Punk.

Whiney G. Weingarten, Thursday, 13 September 2007 18:11 (sixteen years ago) link

but the hot model Kanye parties with is Cassie! I'm sure she just has Ryan Leslie demos and YouTube rants on endless repeat wherever they hang out.

Alex in Baltimore, Thursday, 13 September 2007 18:12 (sixteen years ago) link

ilm/catchdubs/mtv news/whatever's whole OMG RAPPERS SAMPLE COOL WHITE PEOPLE MUSIC stance is wack as ever but dudes like kanye seem pretty aware of this as a hook

The disconnect is that Kanye actually hears Daft Punk in its intended setting--clubs and parties. While most of the people who write and pontificate about Kanye on the internet only hear Daft Punk through their headphones while they eat doritos and get blog ass.

jeez does EVERY thread have to be about Perpetua?

Alex in Baltimore, Thursday, 13 September 2007 18:16 (sixteen years ago) link

Since I'm ranting, I think now's a good time as ever to suggest everyone quit the wack Perptua bullying.

Whiney G. Weingarten, Thursday, 13 September 2007 18:19 (sixteen years ago) link

Yeah, I'm sure Kanye hears Daft Punk more authentically than the dorks who have been buying their albums for 10 years. Got any fantasies about Swizz Beats hearing DP?

Gavin, Thursday, 13 September 2007 18:19 (sixteen years ago) link

I bet Swizz and Ye go to the same parties!

Whiney G. Weingarten, Thursday, 13 September 2007 18:21 (sixteen years ago) link

yeah sorry. you set it up pretty well though! I mean I think that MTV and magazine staffers are as likely to be at clubs and industry parties more than sitting listening to headphones with a snackpack.

(xpost I remember Swizz saying that he'd been a big Daft Punk fan for years when "Touch It" came out, whereas Kanye has just been like "oh that's just something my DJ played for me recently that I liked")

Alex in Baltimore, Thursday, 13 September 2007 18:23 (sixteen years ago) link

can we derail the thread from whiney's kanye-listening-to-daft-punk fan fiction to talk about the album again

and what, Thursday, 13 September 2007 18:24 (sixteen years ago) link

http://whippersnapper.wordpress.com/

While rappers before were mostly using similar soul and funk samples, Kanye sampled Daft Punk. He’s had Adam Levine and Chris Martin on his tracks while having Jon Brion — Fiona Apple’s producer — produce his last album. All of his songs have real hooks, while his singing might not be great, it can carry most of the choruses. It’s also clear that the production and hummability of every song is of near equal importance of the rhymes or the verbal flow, which has been true for very, very few popular hip hop albums. While Gold Digger may have been a cascade of clever rhymes and imagery, it was getting Jamie Foxx to sing as Ray Charles and Jon Brion’s funky electric piano on the third verse that made the song something special.
